Is it Immoral to Download music for Free from the net? |
|
I've often had this discussion with my friends here where i live. Some say it's immoral and a felony, since there are many copyright rights that should be respected, hence we should just buy the records in the store and that's it. Others say that if they can get an album for free they won't pay 20 euros to get it. I think both positions make sense, and there should be a middle point where we could find balance. On the one hand, authors got the right to be paid for their creations, but on the other hand companies establish shameful high prices. They should insist in legal online downloads, and make it very cheap, i think that's the way, that and finding alternative income sources. What do you think? is it right to download music from the internet, or do you think it's immoral?

1. rockvixen (834) | 9 months ago | It's illegal, unless the artist approves their music to be downloaded, which in most cases they don't. It's immoral and wrong. I would rather just buy the music and enjoy it from there. So again yes, it is immoral.

LightninStrike (2508) | 9 months ago | Well the fact that it's illegal is out of any doubt, even though in p2p networks there are still legal voids and doubts. I was talking more about the moral part of the issue, but you clearly said it's immoral, thank you for expressing your opinion.

LightninStrike (2508) | 9 months ago | so you do it anyway then. I think most people do, after all, getting all the music you like paying for it is definitely very expensive and not everyone can afford it. thanks for replying.

goodnightmoon (1448) | 9 months ago | Completely agree, looksvivek! It may be illegal, but immortal? Not unless you have a REALLY strict conscience! lol I support the creators when I can but I don't turn down free stuff either! Trust me, the stuff most people are downloading, the copyrighted owners may be losing some profit, but they aren't going broke from it!

| 3. roosterbooster (3) | 9 months ago | I've been downloading music for over 3 years now and i buy more cd's now than i ever have done. It's time record companies cut their fat profits and pass it on to the consumer.

LightninStrike (2508) | 9 months ago | I agree with part of what you say, rooster...they should be less ambitious and offer more competitive prices so that people didn't consider the prices abusive. thank you for responding.

| 5. savetheunlikely9 (79) | 9 months ago | well, seriously. it's basically like paying for gas. The prices just keep going up and up and up. I mean, I get that artists need money, but they have freakin' millions already. People shouldn't have to pay that much. If it wasn't for my stupid cable company blocking downloads, i'd do it tons.

LightninStrike (2508) | 9 months ago | so you're in favor of downloading then. I can understand your reasons...they make enough money with advertising, tours etc, plus what the media and official places and businesses pay them with royalties. thank you for replying.

6. Kazashmaza (325) | 9 months ago | I think that is is a bit unfair to the musicians who put so much effort, time and money into their creations to miss out on their well earned royalties. I understand because I'm just starting out. However, if you never download music, there are all these people getting free music, which makes cds more expensive because the record companies still want there money. So you end up spending money unnecessarily. The good thing is that these days you can order cheap paid for mp3s on the internet which I think would be best as you are still paying royalties and doing the right thing without spending a fortune.

7. rifat1337 (1236) | 9 months ago | We all have to agree that its illegal, but I have no trouble in downloading my music illegally. Music is horribly overpriced, and I'm sorry that the musicians don't get what they should be but they can only blame the record companies and such. If they made music actually affordable a lot more people would start to buy legally and everyone would be happier. Also the famous musicians aren't losing that much, they are still living the high life. They have different ways of making money too, like live shows. I still go out to see my favorite bands perform.
| |
| |
|
|
LightninStrike (2508) | 9 months ago | well yeah, you can still support the bands buying their merchandise stuff and going to their shows, right? and also being audience for the shows which pay them to attend to them.

| 8. Nuguns61 (9) | 9 months ago | I do a little bit of both. I do download songs, even albums sometimes. I don't think that it's immoral. But I mainly use the downloads to check out artists first. Truthfully, I don't have enough money to buy a cd, and then only like two songs on it. When I download something that's really great, I go out and buy it. If I don't like it, I wipe it off my hard-drive. I wish that there were a better "legal" way of hearing an entire album. Radio singles are great, but I think that alot of people would agree when I say that the rest of the album can be in a whole different ballpark. I think that downloading is a great way to create a larger fanbase, and in most cases it leads to cd sales. But unfortunately, there are going to be the people out there who don't spend a dime on any of it. related resource: buy leads

9. arkaf61 (4620) | 9 months ago | hmmmm I agree with what many other people responding said. Cd's are really expensive. DOwnloading certainly is illegal. Immoral.. well it depends it can be for some people and not for others. I do not really download much music although sometimes I do. IN my case I usually don't like more than one or two songs per cd. I don't think I ever downloaded a full album but I have downloaded single songs - rarely since I am not as much into music as most people LOL SO I feel immoral for my few downloads? Not really. I also do buy cd's whenever I find albums that I really like. It's my - anonymous - to tell the artists that I appreciate their effort. Of course I would buy more if the prices were not that high. I do go to concerts. I actually enjoy it more than to buy cds. One of the thoughts that I find often is that some people seems to think that each download represents the loss of a sale of that cd, which is incorrect in my opinion. SOmetimes people would download a music and enjoy listening to it but not enough that they would buy the cd if they couldn't download. Immoral? Not necessarily. I guess that we could also ask the record companies if they find the prices charged per cd immoral LOL

LightninStrike (2508) | 9 months ago | thanks a lot as usual arka!! Yes, they ARE expensive, i think that's immoral. I think that one immorality balances the other so in the end the status quo is best lol.

10. tajinder_18 (293) | 9 months ago | it is illegal in terms of copyrights.but i would rather download the music free from the internet rather than buying it.it is because the albums that have been selling is very expensive.i know it is not fair to those singers and all the people who involved to produce the songs.the singers also wanna get some profit by selling their original albums. but if the production company are willing to reduce the price for the original albums a lot of people will start buying original too.they have to think on the consumer's sides as well.but if they are not willing all people will continue downloading free from the internet.it might be selfish attitude.but naturally humans are like that.they will think about theirselves first.
