I wanted some living green in my kitchen and instead of running out and buying something I decided to try growing one myself. It was easier than I thought it would be. You can go here to read what I did and see pictures: www.associatedcontent.com/article/550497/how_to_grow_a_potato_vine_indoors.html Have any of you ever grown a potato plant indoors? How big did yours get?

There are many people that have aquariums and house plants that will take cuttings from the house plants and grow them in the aquarium water. This will benefit both the pants and the aquariums because the pants will take up nitrogen waste products from the water and in return will grow better. I have seen some vines that were growing ten or even twenty feet or more just by having their roots in the aquariums. The roots will also give shelter to small fish and make it look more natural.

Now I have to consider moving it to a fish bowl when the roots become to entangled for the jar. I have one too from when I had a fish a long time ago. No longer have the fish but still have the bowl. I would love it if mine grew that long.

A potato plant is so easy to grow, its a fantastic idea to have one in your kitchen. What is more, if you have room, getting a child to plant one in the garden is a great way of getting a child interested in growing things because they get to see results quickly

I do so agree. I plan to do this potato growing in the spring with my Cub scout Pack. I think I'll help my niece and nephew get one started too.

That is really a great idea. I have never seen or heard of anyone growing a potato vine indoors from a potato. I have a cat who loves to chew on the leaves of any indoor plants. I wonder if I choose to grow a potato plant if it would be bad for him if he chewed on the potato plant?

I have not tried growing potato indoor. It's a good idea to have everything grown in the garden to be in handy. I manage to grow green chillies and some seasonal plants like onions, cumin leaves, mint etc in pots. They are doing pretty well.

I read your article and this sounds like a really good idea. I have never grown a potato indoors before. It sounds really easy to do. I was wondering though, are the leaves safe for a cat to nibble on? I have a cat and I did have a few small plants, but she would not leave them alone.

I do not know the answer. I have cats too and I put the potato plant on my windowsill in the kitchen and they don't go up there. I sprayed them with water once and that was enough, they hated it. Please call your vet and ask or research online before trying just in case since you already know they are prone to eating plants. I would not want the cats hurt. It has been fun to watch it grow. I am now having to water daily to keep the roots under water in the jar.

The leaves are poisonous. They are related to deadly nightshade.

You can do the same thing with an avacado seed but it would be a tree instead of a vine.
