How did we ever grow up

Have you noticed how bare the school playgrounds are today? The school playgrounds don't have swings because kids get hit by them, no more marry-go-rounds, teeter-totters, no more snowball fights here in parts of the US. This playground equipment is not to be found in the public playgrounds any more. I don't know how my generation lived to have kids at all with all these dangerous equipment.

at our school kids made it a game to run through the swings while people were swinging...I don't think they are too bad...
we had wooden merry go rounds that were really dangerous...kids were forever flying off them & breaking bones or getting splinters or needing stitches...the monkey bars were dangerous too, kids always fell off those...

I've noticed this myself. I often wonder if it's because the school doesn't want to be responsible for frivolous lawsuits by parents. When we were growing up, if you got hit by a swing, you quickly learned to pay attention to where you were so you wouldn't get hit. And on the slides, you learned to take your turn, and to be careful going up the ladder and all. Not sure, but the part that seems (to me) to have changed is that parents aren't teaching their children playground etiquette. You know: take your turn, be fair, be careful, etc, etc. I take my grandson up to the park with his mom sometimes to use the playground there. It amazes me that these moms don't even pay attention to their kids pushing, shoving other kids off equipment, and all with a 'me first' attitude. With kids having attitudes like that it's no wonder kids get hurt. And anymore some parents sue at the drop of a hat even when it's the kids own fault! It's too bad that playgrounds have to get rid of this stuff, the equipment could be a tool to learn by and provide good exercise.

It is a shame that parents sue at the drop of the hat. I know what you mean about kids not being taught play ground manners. It is a real shame that they won't get to experience the way it feels to swing up high in the sky or fly going down the slide.
