Fertilizer or Dust in the Wind? |
| |
| Do you want to be buried or cremated when you die? Every devout catholic in my family has an opinion about me wanting to be cremated. I just can't wrap my head around being stuck in a $7000 box and set into the ground to be fertilizer in a couple hundred years. I also have every specific instruction as to how and where my ashes should be scattered. I used to want my ashes compressed into lab created gemstones and the set in sterling silver rings for my kids that would be engraved to say "I am always with you" but I was told that is just morbid and sick and I would end up giving my kids nightmares if I did this. So what do you want done with your body after you are gone. | | | | | |

| | Both me and my husband want to be creamated when when we die.. We both agree that it's pointless to have all those people come and mourn over you and for the kids or whoever is paying for it to spend all that money. We both want our ashes spread in a place that holds passion for us.. And not just in some ground. | | | | | | |

| | That's exactly my thought on this. Pay thousands of dollars, cry a lot, stand around and lie about what a great person I was, cry some more. And walk away with nothing but a granite tombstone marker showing you where my body is decomposing. | | | |

| | if I had time to plan for my death? I would want to be cremated and then my ashes put in a hollow heart to be worn by my daughter on her wedding day. If at all that were to happen it would be the one thing to settle me in my after life. Other than that I could care less where or what happened to my body. If my daughter had to pay for this? I already told her not to dare go spending money on a over price box. Potters field is fine with me. It's where my soul goes that I care about. | | | | | | |

| | That is beautiful. A hollow heart to be worn on her wedding day. I can only hope to live long enough to see all of my kids married off but if something should happen to me I have firmly put my foot down about getting my ashes turned into gemstones and I hope they keep the jewelry I have made for them with them always. | | | |

| | You are something else.:) It doesn't concern me what will happen to my body after I'm gone. My soul will be saved in God's own safe deposit box. And I will be back, soon or later.:) | | | | | | |

| | Cremation! One thing my hubby and I agree upon. I do not want to be put into the ground - I want to be scattered upon it. It's something every family needs to get straight - a very important topic. You know, my bf's brother died Christmas night, I know, so sad, and he was cremated. Now, Robin (bf) and her family have been gamblers from way back. She wants to be able to carry some of her brothers ashes with her when she goes gambling but didn't quite know how to do this - I mean, what's going to fit into her purse? Well, I did some looking on e-bay and found a perfect little sterling silver snuff box. I wrote the seller to ask about it being used for this purpose and wasn't surprised to hear back that they didn't think it was appropriate for those purposes, but I thought, screw it. So I bought the box. Robin loves silver and it'll be perfect for her. I told her about it and she's so excited about getting it. I figure if it doesn't close tightly enough, we'll simply super-glue it shut after we put the ashes in it. Great idea, huh? Kind of weird to some, I guess, but to her, it's something that will give a boost, and I'm hoping she really kicks some butt at the blackjack tables. After all, I think that attitude is half the battle when gambling. Cool that I can help out in this regard - does my heart good, frankly. Takes all kinds to make a world, doesn't it? | | | | | | |

| | A good friend of mine from Canada lost her husband quite suddenly last year and she and their daughters all bought pendants with a cap lid and vile from a service at the funeral home made specifically for that purpose. They carry his ashes with them everywhere and never take them off. | | | |

| | My sweetie and I agree on cremation too. I put my foot down on what is to be done with my ashes and have the final say. At least I would like to think so. There is always the chance I will come back and haunt him if he doesn't honor my final request. lol That silver snuff box was a great idea. I never would have thought of something like that. You certainly are creative. | | | |

| | Thanks, Cyn. I just wanted to make her wish come true and help make it possible for her to carry her brother with her. I thought it was so lovely, that she wanted to do that. It's something I would want too. That's all. | | | |

| | For myself I want to be cremated at an alternative funeral centre, since cremation costs the same as burial with tradition funeral homes(I know this when I buried my dad). I want a quick graveside gathering with family and then everyone go and have a few drinks to celebrate my life. I don't want my family to throw away money on my dying when it can be used for living...if that makes sense.I'm also not one for these long funerals and wakes...it is exhausting....I also don't care for all the people who feel they have to go to the funeral....my thing is if you can't come see me when I'm living don't bother when I'm gone, it doesn't much matter then, lol. | | | | | | |

| | I hate that about funerals. My great grandmother lived with me when she got too old to care for herself any longer and she lived with me for 6 years before she passed away. I saw people show up at her wake crying over her coffin I hadn't seen since I was a child. I think those things are pointless. Sure you can gather together and gain support from those around you but I often wonder how someone can bring themselves to come to a funeral and act that way when they didn't have the courtesy to visit the person when they were still breathing. | | | |

| | I couldn't have said it better myself OutSpoken. I totally agree. If you can't be there for them when they are alive then don't bother when they are dead because they wont know you are even there anyways. I think it's more important to show we love someone & respect them when they are still alive. | | | |

| | I'd rather have an old Norse funeral. Put my body on a raft full of firewood , set it adrift & ablaze, then get all my friends good & drunk. What's the point of an expensive box in the ground on a plot of land that's now useless? Hopefully my family won't need a stone to remember me. | | | | | | |

| | I think the cemetery here are a bit more clogged compared to your country, so I prefer to be cremated. We also have a tradition here where family members would pay tribute to their departed loved ones every November 1st, as they go to cemeteries and make some time in remembering the life that was shared with them. Though it's cheaper, I don't really go for the cost of it. I'm considering the valuable time they'd bother going on these days, together with lots of people bustling around. If ever I'd die, then they don't have to worry going to the cemetery as my presence is with them inside the urn!;) | | | | | | |
