Did you ever have a crush on someone in Martial Arts class? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (4411)   ranked 1 out of 106 in martial arts2 years ago

It seems like a lot of Martial Artists in my area have crushes on each other. When I was in college, it was hard not to notice a lot of cute, well-groomed, strong guys and I wasn't the only one.

So did you have a crush on another martial artist or martial artists? Did any of them have a crush(es) on you?

The short time i trained Iaido i had a crush on a girl that trained Kendo, a really cute and nice girl. It didnt go anywhere much because i was to shy to say anything and i felt stupid when i tried to talk to her.

That sounds sweet though, it never really went anywhere with most of us. I think person A would have a crush on B would had a crush on C who had one on D which since it wasn't reciprocated. . . that's why it never went anywhere. Cute and nice, that sounds neat. Thank you very much for sharing.

I think my bf would be upset if I did, also our group is very small so it would be a bad idea if I did, which I don't. I hope nobody does have a crush on me in my group.

I was just curious to see if this is a widespread phenomenon or just in my area. Thank you for responding. Take care

Yep I had a crush on the karate masters son and his friend. I of course was only 14 and they were 13 however neither one noticed my existance. Now I am 26 and look back on it and laugh.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (4411)   ranked 1 out of 106 in martial arts  2 years ago

When people are like 13 or 14, we call those puppy loves, so I guess that's a puppy crush. So you had a crush on two young men? Cute. Sometimes I wonder if all the people who think they went unnoticed by others really were unnoticed.

26, so that was 13 years ago. It is fun to look back and laugh sometimes. Thanks for your response and take care.

Yes, I had a crush on this well-groomed, strong guy in my Martial Arts class. I ended up dating him for 3 years. I was great dating someone who had such an interest in Martial Arts as I do. We use to practice a lot together even when we were not in class together. It was also great to be with someone who understood your goals and why you were so nervous before a test to the next level!

That must have been so-o-o cool!

I envy you. I'm surprised it didn't work out, sounds like it was a nice relationship while it lasted. Thanks and take care.

Hi,there,dear friend writersedge,
I have to adimit that I don't have such experience as the unmber of the boys in my university is relatively small. Our university is devided into three parts,so the boys who major in martial art or something like that are in different parts of our college...

Ours was a club, we went to Martial Arts at the end of the day, so whatever people majored in, if they were interested in our style of Martial Arts, they were there. But some places are set-up differently. Take care

I joined Tae Kwon Do recently, and unfortunately have a huge crush on my instructor. I say unfortunately because he is about 15 years younger than me, and on top of that he would never ask me out because of the Master/student relationship. So I'm stuck having to see him twice a week in class and wishing I was 10 years younger and not his student!
Does anyone have this problem? I'd like to hear how you deal with it.

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (4411)   ranked 1 out of 106 in martial arts  2 years ago

Up here, people tend to have a crush on everyone in the Martial Arts class. I was just wondering if we were the only ones. Most of the Black Belts were stand-offish enough to not become part of my massive number of Martial Arts crushes, but there was one my age who looked like a Model for Mountain Man Magazine. He was so handsome, on a scale of 1 - 10, he was 11. But I met his girlfriend. She also looks like a model. Can't compete with that, so I just concentrated on other guys.

I would say to volunteer somewhere and meet people who are your age and have similar interests. Try to imagine him as ugly. Also try to see it as a lesson in humility, self-restraint, etc - all the good qualities of a Martial Artist. But do find some place where there are nice men your age (almost anywhere except a bar). Take care and thanks for your response. Let me know how this all works out.

anonymiss (1)   ranked 69 out of 106 in martial arts  1 year ago

I am having a similar problem. I'm ten years older than one of the assistant instructors at my studio, and I know that this crush will go nowhere fast. He's tall with a nice body and it's hard not to notice him, especially when he comes close to me in class to instruct me.

I know this crush is no good for obvious reasons. He's my instructor, he's younger, he hasn't truly lived life yet, he's very devoted to the martial arts while it's just an activity for me, and he likes a more age-appropriate girl in the class. So any attempt to try to pursue him would be preposterous and futile on my part.

I like writersedge's idea of finding other things to occupy your mind and time like volunteering. The only thing I disagree with is attempting to consider your instructor ugly. Instead of doing that while in class, work on your class techniques and focus on them, and the focus will be less on your instructor. That and the volunteering are what I'm going to do so I can take the focus off my too young instructor and put it more towards working on myself and finding a more age-appropriate guy for me.

LostGirl111 (1)   ranked 85 out of 106 in martial arts  1 year ago

Anonymiss, you have a great point, and that's just what I have been doing. I have concentrated in class and tried not to think of him as a crush, instead just as my instructor. I am working on my technique, and it's working. Good luck!

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (4411)   ranked 1 out of 106 in martial arts  1 year ago

You guys both have a tough situation, but you're working on it and working out ways to deal with it.

Crushes do seem to happen a lot in Martial Arts. The closeness of human bodies, the wonderfulness of the well-toned body, and geniuinely nice people often take Martial Arts. I volunteered at a non-profit and found my husband. Sometimes the fact that we spend so much time in Martial Arts without other places to meet wonderful people can lead to longstanding crushes, too.

So try to have one other place where you can meet other nice people at least once a week. There are other fish in the sea. If you look, you'll find them. Thanks for responding. Take care

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (4411)   ranked 1 out of 106 in martial arts  1 year ago

PS, I was just kidding about imagining them as ugly. But when you get out and go to other places often, you will notice other people your age and that they have aged well. Just don't go to food courts at Malls. If they're anything like the one where I live, you won't see anyone who has aged well or toned bodies. Take care.

I practice "veng tsun" and I do say, that I would rather learn about the martial art, than go and get girls/(boys if ur a girl or boy...) thats just not right if you go to a martial arts class to find relationship. you should be going out to a mall or something

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (4411)   ranked 1 out of 106 in martial arts  1 year ago

First of all, I went to Martial Arts because it was my first opportunity to do it. I had wanted to for many years, but never got the chance.

Second of all, I was in for 2 1/2 years. I noticed that people developed crushes over time. No one was chasing people around, it just happened.

Third, everyone who goes to the Mall where I live, is out-of-shape at best and morbidly obese at worst.

I met my husband by volunteering. The volunteer position was not to have a boyfriend either, but to make friends so I wouldn't be lonely after my Mother died.

I'm not saying to go chase people in Martial Arts classes or that it's a place to get a boy or girlfriend. I'm just saying that I noticed where I live that over time, years, people do tend to get crushes on each other. I was just wondering if the same thing happened elsewhere. I was just curious. Most of the people in my class, I thought of like family, like brothers and sisters, but it was hard not to have a crush on at least one person there.

anonymiss (1)   ranked 69 out of 106 in martial arts  1 year ago

Jeffrey, trust me. I did not sign up for my martial arts class with the intention of meeting guys. When I'd complain about being single and people would tell me "Why don't you get to know one of the guys in your class?" I'd be all "No way, Jose!"

So this crush I have on my young instructor now is a shock to me. It just came out of nowhere. I was the type of person who never had crushes on instructors from academic school onward, and who kept certain relationships professional. It caught me off guard.

It's not fun at all. I can't tell any of my friends in class about this because they'd laugh at me and ask me if I've lost my mind for having a crush on an 18-year-old. And I don't want the masters to find out and chastise me for this. It's just an uncomfortable situation for all and I hope I can find the strength to get over this guy and move on.

Oh man, I sure did. I had a crush on my martial arts instructor... I can't believe I forgot about him. I was twelve, he was nineteen at the time. What made it all the more, er, interesting was that there were a couple of classes where I was the only student there, and we'd spar together and everything...

Fun times. Wonder where he went to.

Just gave you a plus to try to help your star score and because I like what your wrote.

I think crushes happen more than people know in Martial Arts.

Only person to show up for a class? Wow!

Every once in a while I run into my old Martial Arts buddies that are still in this area, the ones that left, I never see around.

We call under teen age love, puppy love, so that must have been a puppy crush. It sounds like you really enjoyed Martial Arts. Check out my other Martial Arts discussions. I'm sure you can respond to many of them. Thanks and take care.

I'm pretty sure it was a puppy crush, haha. Thank you for giving me a plus, and for replying! But yes, I believe it's more than possible to get crushes or even find relationships in martial arts. After all, it's such a huge interest that can be a big part of your daily life. It's always more fun if you and your crush/S.O. shares your interests.

I do capoeira and I used to have a crush on someone in my class but now we're just good friends-- he knew I liked him. I actually have an interesting knack for falling for guys who do martial arts (I find out they do martial arts after I meet them): not just capoeiristas. I've gone out with guys who have done: kendo, tae kwon do, capoeira and right now I have a crush on someone who does bujinkan ninjutsu:$ I'm sure it's not too uncommon for people to find each other attractive in martial arts classes.
