I'm Off To Texas next week . Any tips? | | Last time I went to the States I was up north, in New York State. I'm told the South is totally different. Any tips and tricks I need to know? I'm staying in Austin.

But hey, you have been to New York....this would be a lot slow paced than that. If you love to drink or dance, they have a strip where you can drink and a few streets away, they have clubs for dining and dancing.
It's not going to be as cold as New York at this time of year but cold nonetheless. You might want to bring thermals or make sure you have enough to layer.
Good luck on your trip. Have lots of fun!

The blocks of clubs your other response is referring to is 6th Street, you will find every type of night life you could want, if you like that kind of thing, everything from jazz to hard rock. If you want Mexican food, go to Baby A's it has fantastic food. If you are looking for high end shopping check out Barton Creek Mall. If you like hiking and outdoors, you will love Sculpture Falls, once you leave the parking area, it's easy to forget you are in the middle of a big city! it's beautiful. And of course there is the capitol building and that area of downtown with all types of shops and coffee shops and all with in walking distance of one another, the University of Texas campus is beautiful as well. If you have any questions that I might be able to help you with, feel free to ask, although I live in Pennsylvania now, I lived in Texas all my life until 3 years ago, and I moved up here from Austin. Oh and it will be a different experience from New York State, we tend to talk a little slower, and not be as rushed about everything in the South. However, there is nothing that compares to Southern Hospitality, folks that you pass on the street will even say hi, howdy, or at the least a nod of the head greeting. Welcome to the Great State of Texas hope y'all have a good 'ole time.

If you stay into the summer, it will be hotter there than New York. And watch for fire ants. I doubt you will have much trouble with them if you stay in the city, but we had fire ants in Arkansas and it's said they came up through Texas so watch the turf. They sting and can make blisters.

Its tropical here, but is a few degrees cooler in Austin. The food is Great. Watch out for those jalapeno peppers. There is a definite Spanish influence in South Texas. Jalapeno Peppers are said to burn both ways. Not that I've had personal experience you understand! Yes south Tx is a different world than NY State. Lots of deep snow in NY., which is why I leave Canada in the winter. You won't need winter clothes. Just a light coat and some warm undies.Have Fun!
