Easter Eggs without the Boxes - Good or Bad Idea?

When I went shopping yesterday I noticed among all the boxes of easter eggs some easter eggs that did not have the boxes, they were just foil wrapped and were a medium size egg and were about 50p cheaper than the boxed eggs. Apparently Cadburys are selling them this way to cut down on packaging, now as a mum of 4 I got quite excited about this because easter in our house is mayhem with hundreds of boxes of eggs all over the place and I hope everyone will buy them for us instead of boxed ones, I certainly will get some. But do you think this is a good idea? Or does it take away the fun of easter? Do you think this will benefit the environment without all those boxes being thrown away to rot somewhere? Do you think this idea will catch on with all the other manufacturers?

I think it's a very good idea because you pay for the packaging, and boxed easter eggs are so expensive, in relation to what they really are. And with all the environment issues we should be cutting down on packaging not increasing it, so I would happily buy easter eggs without all that unnecessary cardboard which is a total waste and all those trees chopped down just so it makes the egg look more presentable? It's criminal and the sooner the government start to clamp down sooner rather than later on excess packaging, going slightly off the subject Marks and Spencers have just announced from 6th May they will be charging for carrier bags, something has to be done to stop the wastage.

Here here my thoughts exactly, easter eggs are terribly dear, I was looking at some today and its going to cost me a fortune because I have 8 to buy for. But I may just get them the ones unboxed, and I might ask family to get mine the unboxed then that way I am doing my bit to cut down on waste. Mind you we have recycling bins now so its not too bad. I dont use many carriers I buy the strong ones from the shops and then just reuse them, but if I do have to use carriers then one of our supermarkets has a carrier recycling bin so I just take them all there.

I believe this is an eggcelent idea! Good for Cadbury's! You probably don't remember when NO eggs had boxes. There were various sizes and only foil wrapped. There were also sugar eggs and we always had dyed or decorated eggs for breakfast. There is far too much packaging these days and even though it is getting better for recycling, there are still those who combine cardboard with plastic windows, which means that you either have to separate the carboard from the plastic or just not bother (and send it to landfill).

ha ha good joke I should have used that in my heading title, I am so slow at thinking of these things! Yes these were just foil wrapped I think its great, I have only ever known them in boxes really. It is getting better and easier to recycle but still a lot of people I talk to still just throw it in the normal rubbish, so this would be a great reduction.

I think it's a great idea. We're drowning in packaging and all the other unnecessary plastic and paper products. Anything to cut down on junk for the landfills is good news.

Hi Gemini_rose, I think it's a great idea myself. You can still have fun on Easter, shouldn't take away any fun at all. I do think that the environment will benefit, from this. We should have been doing this a long time ago. Other manufacturers should want to do this to, at least to save money. :o)

You are right ruby222 the box does make the egg, without a doubt and it stops the egg getting smashed as you carry it home! I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that with having 4 kids, if everyone got us these boxless eggs it would make it easier! Of course they did not and so we had about 25 boxed eggs!! Yes all easter eggs are half price now, I did not need any with the kids having loads but there were none left anyway they have all gone. I am sure you will get an egg though I will send positive thoughts to sainsburys not to sell them all!! I seem to have got into recycling since our local council made us do it ha ha
