| | 2. MrCoolantSpray (753) | 2 years ago | Your best bet is to take a class in photography. Most community colleges offer courses for credit, and continuing education courses in the subject. If you enroll in a class, as a photography student you'll qualify for about a jillion student discounts. I got some equipment from this catalog: (http://www.pictureline.com/specials/pdf/MOC_PL_8_07-1.pdf) but they don't sell simple 35 mm slrs. Craigslist and ebay have cameras and equipment for sale constantly, but used equipment usually comes with problems.
To really learn the subject a single lens reflex (slr) camera is essential. Something that has a fully manual mode that allows you to set both the shutter speed and the aperture value will give you the creative flexibility that good photography demands.
I'd suggest getting a film slr to start. A good one only costs about $150. Personally, I prefer the Canon Rebel series. If you enjoy it, and want to go digital, Canon lenses are interchangeable between digital and analog. Many other companies don't offer that.
It's a lot of info to absorb, but just take a class, and you'll learn everything about what camera to get, and how to use it.

Many photographers have extra cameras because they upgrade and need to keep current with changes in the field. They might know someone who has such equiptment and is looking for some extra money. I would go right to digital.

| | 4. Mondoh (118) | 2 years ago | I agree w/previous commentors 'bout learning w/film SLRs... I started in B/W, Mamiya Sekor 500, bought 4 $100 from a guy in my photoghraphy class who was upgrading to Minolta.
Speaking of which, U should take...Get 2 know the people who carry cameras...I have a Nikon FG rig (Older yet still works) I bought at a garage sale, 28mm, 51mm, 80-150 zoom, Nikon Flash, Filters, Bag etc...4 $35... I bought a great digital (Kodak 710) at a local pawn shop. <$100
Walk UR neighborhood, Try Ebay or Craigslist, If you're just starting out & learning... Don't spend too much on UR 1st rig, If it's in U, U will learn to walk around w/a frame in UR eyes... 4:3 or 16:9 in HD & turn it over 90 degrees for the shot when needed. Hope this helps... Mondoh

| | 5. feris0604 (285) | 2 years ago | Your local photography and camera shops can be of great help. Many people will want to upgrade and so they may trade-in their older cameras. I knew of a guy who bought a new Canon DSLR for quite a huge sum of money. Yet, as he could not understand how the camera worked, he sold it off ... at a fraction of the price! So, you see there are chances you can get something. Ask around. If you don't mind Net shopping, then go to Amazon. com. There are lots of used cameras for you to choose. The word 'used' can mean anything from a few weeks to a few years old. The price is much cheaper than that from your local shops too!

| | | 6. NIGHTWOLF420 (12) | 2 years ago | Thomas, Depending on what brand you prefere thats where I would start from first looking around for that brand first. But another thing to keep in mind is this, IF you want a camera that can have interchangable lenses you'll be looking anywhere from $279.00 to $425.00just for The camera ALONE. The lenses will run you anywhere from $150.00 to $175.00 depending on the distances you want to get of the pictures & or objects. All I can say is shop around online first before you actually decide on a camera, cause once you purchase it the warenty doesn't last long on some cameras DEPENDING on where you buy it at. IF you buy it at a camera shop like WOLF CAMERA or any other place like that then you're covered aslong as you bring it back to THAT SHOP. As far as the lenses go & the filters I'de ask The Store owner or clerk on duty about that area. They'Re more knowledgable on that than I am. Well I Hope I Helped You Out Some & Happy Camera Hunting.
