I really hate to use the word "charity" here because I am very afraid it might be misconstrued. But alas, my store of vocabulary is rather limited so please accept that the word is NOT to be meant in any demeaning manner. Rather, by "charity", it means to help generously those less fortunate or privileged than ourselves. So, what charity do you perform on a regular basis? It may be your giving of time, money or xitar (don't bother with the dictionary, I made this word up). If it is time, it could be "simple" things like giving free tuition to needy kids or bringing old folks on a city tour. If it is money, it can be regular donations to worthwhile charities or even tithe to your church. For me, spending active hours to help is not really my key in the tune. Yet if it is money, well, I would love to but one who cannot even help himself is sometimes overly challenged to help others. So instead of either, I choose to click ads. Remember the Hunger Site? The address is at www.thehungersite.com so give it a look if you have not. The site also links to 5 other worthy causes - Breast Cancer, Child Health, Literacy, Rain Forest and Animal Rescue. I subscribe to the daily reminder for the Hunger Site so each time I receive the notification, I will click on the ad for Hunger and continue with those for the other 5 causes. Each click does something wonderful for them. Every day, I help give the value of 1.1 cups of food to the hungry, help a woman in need get a free mammogram, help a child in need get health care, help a child in need attain literacy, help protect 11.4 square feet of rainforest and help give the value of 0.6 bowl of food to rescued animals. For something as easy as 6 clicks, I did "so much". If you are not already performing any regular charity, I urge you to do something similar. Otherwise, how do you regularly help others? What charity do you perform on a regular basis? Do share. =)

Che che = charity in your language? You mean there are parents who name their children Charity literally? That's... interesting.

I am glad you wrote back. I thought about this a lot and these girls/women now but they never were called Charity to their face that I know about..they were always called Che Che as this is a nick name.. I agree Charity is not a good name..as its ..."well charity" but charity means love and sometimes people do get the strangest names. I do think that people years ago had strange names too..my one brother was called Hanibal..and all kinds of variations of names over the years but we don't get to pick our own names until later..thanks for the post..

Besides the Hunger Site, another site my friends and I regularly visit, that might suit you is called freerice.com. You take vocabulary quizzes and for each correct answer, twenty grains of rice are donated. It is a lot of fun. I do not go there every day, but the days that I do I usually donate at least 2,000 grains of rice. Like you said, these are sites that are free to use, but give so much.

Yes, I remember freerice which I found out from at myLot. I can't remember if you were the one I learned from, or another. I go freerice once in a while. 2000 grains. You must have played for a long time!

I have been considering volunteering myself for some "missions" overseas too. If I can find something that requires just time on my part and don't need me to pay a cent, I think I might consider.

Your daily ezine... I am not sure whether you send them in email html or pdf format, but whichever the case, you can add some banners at the end. It may be to charities. You help them publicize but won't charge a cent. That's what I meant. It was just a casual remark anyway.

I often go to that site. It is a good way to help. Before I came to China, I volunteered for the Red Cross for over six years. I find that I would much rather do something I don't get paid for than to do anything else. I know that there are many good causes so I really need to find one I can be involved in while I am teaching here. I guess right now what I do is "tutor" a 10-year-old Chinese girl in English. My nephew says I shouldn't, but for me, helping anyone is important.

I hate to say that I am not helping any charities. I do help others out with food ocassionally but that doesn't really condone as charity. I babysit my little 6 year old adopted sister for free to give my 60 year old mother a break. But again I don't think that is charity. I will check out that link you posted though. It seems like soemthing that will be great to do to help out. That be great to be able to say that I help out just a little instaead of not at all. Thanks.

I give tithe and offerings to my church with each check. I also contribute to a worthy student fund at the school where I teach. The money is used as scholarship money for worthy students. I also donate money to student missionaries.

I Like to help out with cancer awareness and homeless animals. I donate money for homeless animals. I have also taken in 4 cats that needed a home. I used to help out at an animal shelter, but have not been able to for awhile now. I think cancer awareness is important because a lot of people do not think it can happen to them and sure enough it does. I am currently undergoing treatment at a young age and feel it is important to get it out there.

I really dont participate in charity on a regular basis. I should & I have been meaning to for quite some time. Many years ago I sponsored a child through World Vision, which I did for at least ten years. Nowadays, my charity is mainly donations of money, clothes, toys or blankets for dogs at the RSPCA. I am aware of the site you have here & have it in my favourites. It is excellent. Did you know they have a literacy section, where you can send a free ecard, & this helps donate books to needy children.

I do put money in the collection plate and that goes to the needy at home and abroad, I guess that is considered charity and I do pick up bottles and bring them to the school and they go to buy school supplies. And once a year, I donate to the church college in Ontario. I guess that is considered monetary charity, but as for the other kinds, it depends on whether I am out. I used to do volunteer work and I do help out when it is our group's time to do the baking for a special event, or when we have our annual concert or whatever, but I do not know if that is charity. I suppose the money in the collection plate is a charity, since I do it twice on Sunday, and I do need that money, but those poor people here and in the mission fields need it more than I.

I used to donate to World vision but sadly when we hit a rough patch, financially, I wasn't able to continue donating. We used to perform low cost cataract surgeries for indigents, where we doctors waive our professional fees. We still do, on occasion. That site looks like a great idea! I will try it out.

In the past I did alot of things with my time. Now I mostly just give money. To the disabled veterans....to our troops I make and send cards for them to use to send to their families....and other charities that need money..ask and I give.

In fact, I left out something in my discussion. If we are not able to provide money or time, even sending positive thoughts is great.:)

I pledge monthly to the community chest and the kidney foundation. I have been doing this for the past 18 years. My wife also pledges monthly to the community chest. As long as we are able to give, we will continue this pledging, knowing that the money they collect goes to charitable organizations to help the needy and underprivileged. In addition, my wife also volunteers once a week at the Society for the Visually Handicapped. She finds this very fulfilling. She helps them to translate school text books to braille in order that the blind can read the textbooks in schools. This is not so much charity as in volunteerism. Either way, it is for a worthy cause.

By pledging, your commitment is evident. Way to go! :)
