When you look around your place...does it reflect who you are?   email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. Perspectives (2261)   ranked 8 out of 4,343 in have discussion on day to day issues 4 years ago

Many of you who respond here comment that many of my discussions get your 'thinkers' working overtime. Being that it is 10:39 PM and I'll be signing off shortly I thought I lighten things up a little.

We've been doing some re-decorating lately because we believe that the outer space we occupy is a reflection of who we are at different stages of life. One of our services is to assist clients in de-cluttering and organizing their spaces. Sometimes all it takes to create that change is when people awaken to the idea that the outer is a reflection of the inner. How do you feel about that idea?

So having said that if you were a stranger walking into your home or workspace...does it reflect who you are? Or are there aspects that are not really YOU...but you haven't had a chance to bring things into alignment yet?

I'll start the ball rolling here by saying that David and I know for sure our home and yard reflects who we are. Every room, nook and cranny has some symbolic/spiritual reminder of our shared experiences. Loving nature as we do our home has an 'organic' feel to it. We also love the Southwest and Aboriginal art and the colors and decor show that as well.

Being we have not chosen to live in the Southwest because we love Canada...we do the next best thing and bring the Southwest influence into our home. Our walls are painted in soft yellows...and the kitchen is a combination of orange and Terra Cotta. Our great room has 25 foot cathedral ceilings with brick and wood. I could go on...but I think you get the idea.

I have included a photo of just one of many Aboriginal art collectibles..a true reflection of who we are. So how about you and your space..care to comment?

I wish my place was like you, but then again I still don't have a house to consider and call as my own.

But my room does reflect who I am and what I am doing, you could see books that I enjoy reading and some designs that I posted on my wall. You'll also see my guitars in it, I have two guitars with one electric and an acoustic. I love music, I think that's what I enjoy doing the most whenever I'm alone and want to enjoy my OWN music!;) I do like what my new room looks like right now, it pretty much expresses the simple side of me..

As for what we have outside, mostly you'll see different plant species and variations of faunas from herbs to flower-blooming plants!;) Not much is put outside, but we also keep birds as pets. Our house is just a typical one, with garden and lawn that's just right for a simple family to own!;)

Hi...and thanks for sharing your space and what it reflects to you. I love discussions like these because it gives us a chance to learn a little more about each other in personal ways.

Your home and yard sounds like what you said it is..."Just right for a simple family to own."

Enjoy!

I love myspace, it is the top floor of a older duplex, a 2br, more then enough room for me, I collect angels, fairies as well. I love glass, too. I am collector. I have my treasures, but my space is still open and organized. Can't have clutter on tables, or floor. My home also is full of house plants, I have a my puter in the sunroom, and a 3 season porch as well. The space has lots of nice storage space like a pantry, linen closet and a built in buffett to hold some of those collected treasures and a plate rail as well. It all reflects my love of art , music, and nature.Out back is a lovely little patio, with a firepit and my gardens. So for me if life never changed I would do just fine, I have contentment here.

Why doesn't that surprise me. When I saw your Avatar I had a strong energetic sense of you and what you like. The way you describe your place is sounds like a sacred space.

Thanks for giving me a visual impression of your delightful area. Wonderful when our homes reflect who we are, how we feel and what we love.

Hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

It sounds like the approach you use for your clients to declutter might be a little like Feng-Shui? A thought there. I've never liked clutter and am constantly getting rid of the old (perhaps pave way for the new?)

My "work" area of where my computer is both functional and a bit decorative...and organized. In one shelf are my directories of The Photographer's Market and Writer's Market...also have some volumes on the top of the hutch...To add a bit of "decor" though I have things or a Native American theme, my Southwestern style lamp, and my figurines, including my wolf figurine (my totem animal) Adjacent to my computer desk I have just one of my enormous vision boards...then pasted all over my desk are print ups of 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 dollar bills plus a print up of the words.."Thoughts Become Things" --I include a photo of my computer area. Why I don't know but my little "mascot" that I keep on my scanner is of a stuffed rabbit toy..Wondering if that has some significance why I choose a rabbit...LOL

My bedroom is a real reflection of both my personality and of my religious path of Wicca/Pagan as I have on each "direction" wall a reflection of the symbolism of each direction according to Wicca...and for a bit of whimsy I have a bona fide Black Witches hat hanging from the middle of the ceiling...I also have my guitar hanging up on one wall...plus framed photos of mine, including copies of past covers where my photos were published--I store most of my photo work in my bedroom as well in containers...plus have a bookcase filled with my wiccan/pagan books...The color scheme is a custom color of deep turquoise blue on adjacent walls while on the other adjacent walls is custom color deep lavender.

My "Library" area is actually the hallway leading to the bathroom...only place I could store the floor to ceiling bookcases and every inch of space is filled with books..

While my apartment in general is not cluttered, neither does it have a "sterile" appearance..it's very much lived in...LOL

Hi Pye...and congrats on making your 6000th post. Sorry it has taken me a couple of weeks to start responding to this post. I have been here...but catching up on other discussions I haven't been too.

I like the sound of your place..and from what you are saying it does reflect you...your soul path...and most everything else that you hold dear. I appreciate the photo...always good to have visuals with a discussion like this.

Lived in places are where I like to be. I am not comfortable with Martha Stewart environments where everything is so 'perfect' it creates a superficial feel. Yes, we definitely include space clearing and Fund Shui principles when working with clients...even if that is not the original reason they contacted us. The outer reflects the inner idea.

Good input...how are the feet and legs doing?

phew...i just answered a post about health care...i do need to "lighten up" before bed!!A few years ago I actually wanted to write a book called "Yourself as A House"...as a real estate agent I spent a many long hours by myself in other people's houses, which kind of makes you nutty after awhile, lol...But you notice things, silly things, like the way the dishes are displayed or where people leave their shoes or have pictures or a wine collection, etc.
And from that experience I've realized that your house says more about you than you realize. Everything from the outside yard to the inside of your closet gives you a bit of a glimpse of who you are...even if you hate your house or don't like it or have no control over it. I have found that basic dream symbolism as far as colors or objects kind of relates to the same things in waking life...
hmmm...maybe I SHOULD write that book, lol...I think there's a rough draft on a hard drive somewhere here...my house would tell you I'm a busy somewhat disorganized mom who hates clutter and needs more storage, lol. I have no knick knacks, but the boxes piled to the ceiling in the garage should say I'm a packrat.
You would also recognize I'm a bit crazy, I made a 4x8 black and white collage hanging in my living room!

Collage Crazy!

Hehehe if that makes you crazy to make a collage, I must be crazy too, I have a angel collage my brother had framed, in my dining room and another fairy collage in my room on one wall. I like being nutty I think.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Perspectives (2261)   ranked 8 out of 4,343 in have discussion on day to day issues  4 years ago

Please accept my apology for my tardy response here. I rarely am two weeks behind...but I've been busy with work and other discussions. I knew I would get back to it...just took me awhile.

Thanks to both of you for sharing what you call 'nutty' tastes. In my view being a little 'crazy' is great...it gives great latitude for behavior. Most creative people I have met are all unconventional in their thinking...and thank goodness for that!

There are so many people trying to fit in rather than expressing themselves and living an authentic life...so hats off to 'utter-nutters!' I am a proud member of that club and wouldn't have it any other way.

I like the basic premise of your book...I think you are on to something. When we do de-cluttering for clients we remind them..the outer is a reflection of the inner and you've obviously picked up on that.

Both your collages sound whimsical and fun...thanks for including a photo Vera5d...I was going to comment but we need to be friends. Let me know if you ever get your book published...sounds like a winner to me.

Well... your home definitely represent who you are. Paticulary if you own your own home.

If you don't... only your possessions represent who you are.

In the last 7 years... I did not had a proper home for 5 of those years. Even so I had a roof over my head... I never did call it home... because most of my possessions were in storage. I did live for two years in a 4 bedroom house (the one with the photos of me)... but without my possessions. I thought of it as "camping". Then I did spend two years in a one bedroom flat which was not big enough to bring all my stuff in. It was never considered as "home".

Lets put it this way...
A luxury hotel room in a scenic paradise would not feel like home to me.

But if I was living in a double garage with all my possessions neatly arranged around me... I would call it home.

Our possessions represent our past and who we are. Those who don't believe in possessions and like to live out of a suitcase are very shallow people and it will eventually come back and bite them as they get older.

Note...
Loving your possessions is not being materialistic. There is a fine balance between the two.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Perspectives (2261)   ranked 8 out of 4,343 in have discussion on day to day issues  4 years ago

Hi again...

Your comments about our possessions representing our past and who we are is key. There is a lot in what you say about having meaningful possessions surrounding up and how that makes it feel like home. Even when I lived in apartments it was that fact that made my 'home' a haven every time I walked in the door. The same holds true today. The home David and I are in now has who we are in every nook and cranny. Every change we make to it or the yard creates a deeper bond with it.

Good input..thanks Aussies

Raia, no way at the moment does my home reflect who I am.
Until a certain person who lives here also removes his junk it will not either.

Now on the other hand our backyard and 10 car garage sure reflects who the other person who lives here is.
He is a hoarder and collector.
I would not mind so much if it was all packed away neatly, but no it is everywhere.
I call him "StepToe" I am just glad he does not have a son.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Perspectives (2261)   ranked 8 out of 4,343 in have discussion on day to day issues  4 years ago

Hi Goodie...been awhile since we chatted. As you can tell by the tardy response to this discussion. Two weeks...wow that is the longest I have left a topic 'unattended.' Oh well I am here now and really enjoying reading comments.

When David and I were first together he used to be more like your hubs. It was a real bone of contention between us because I crave order. When I gently pointed out that he wasted a lot of time and energy searching for lost things in the piles of clutter and that life would be simpler he slowly opened himself up and changed for himself. Now he keeps his desk and our shared space very orderly and no longer can live with messes either. Thank goodness!

I know for experience no amount of harping will do it...something needs to change within them. When we work with people who hoard they have a lot of different reasons for doing so. Some of it is a fear that if they throw it out they will need it...others grew up without 'enough'...in their minds. Whatever it is it goes beyond logic.

Anyway, easy stepping there my friend. How is your neck and the acupuncture doing?
Weather starting to warm up too!

Take care..
Raia

myLot reputation of 94/100. Goodie123 (7548)  4 years ago

He is the type of person, that when he see's something he says "Umm I might use thst one day " then buys it.
We have so much furniture we will never ever use half of it.
I told him we are going to have a garage/yard sale and get rid of half of it.

The acupunture is going really well.
It is amazing what such little needles can tell the doctor what is wrong with us.
I have arthitis in my neck, tendenitis in both shoulders and a swollen disk.

Hi...thanks for dropping back and giving me an update. I cannot believe it has been a week since I posted. That is the longest time...ever since becoming a member here. David and I are busy and enjoying the creative process of redecorating our space to bring it more into alignment with where we are now. Painting, re-ordering and de-cluttering are something we do on a semi-regular basis to have our home reflect who we are at different points along our shared journey.

Your hubby sounds like a real clutter-bug. Some people are like that...but my mother raised me with a belief that has stuck to this day..."It really isn't a bargain if you don't need it right here...right now." I guess he has his reasons...and you sound like a pretty understanding gal...even though you see it differently.

Glad to hear the acupuncture is working for you. It is a rather amazing process alright! Continue to take care of yourself...you give a lot to others!

Good to be chatting...as infrequent as it is these days.

Absolutely! From the clutter at my work spaces to my paintings on the walls.

I used to be quite neat. But since retiring I've become downright slovenly! I think it reflects my loss of purposeful direction when I had to quit work.

There is also a variety of Native American items throughout the house, mostly pieces we've purchased on trips to Native lands.

And one wall of the hall is covered with photos of family and friends. It's our Hall of Fame! Lots of cute photos of grandkids predominate.

I'm slowly trying to get rid of things that I don't want or need anymore. They have tended to collect in the basement. I want to "lighten my load" in life and move a lot of the "stuff" out. Some goes in the trash, some into recycling, and some to the church rummage sale. A few things will go to the grown kids.

It is astonishing how much stuff one can collect without even trying!

When I lived in London my apartment was filled with hundreds of books, dozens of pictures and many decorative and ornamental items. I gave them all to charity when I moved. In my new accommodation I have 1 picture and 2 hand decorated mirrors. If you walked in you would see that I like to read, and that I use a computer. That is all. Maybe it does sum up who I am at this stage of my life.

I am so behind on my responses...but I am planning to get caught up in the next week or so.

Anyway, I appreciate your input...and your observations about where you are and how a simpler life could very well be a reflection of who you are and where you are at this stage of life.

Interesting perspective...thanks for sharing it.

cool service!

I would say that, yes, my surroundings do reflect who I am. Our home has something reflecting our religion in every room and likely on near every wall...
the surroundings also reflect my musical interests - with a couple fiddles, a dulcimer, a wurlitzer organ and an 1856 upright piano... the bookcases are filled with historical religious works.

they also reflect that I am a mother and that we live a frugal life.

Maybe you have a big house where you can decorate so many. It is your reflection I would say. What you have in your house is what you are. My place is a small flat in the city. I like it even it is just enough for the three of us. I like framed art which I personally prepare, of course I buy the frame and do the framing. I like native decorations, and cabinet made of wood with natural color. As you stay longer in your flat, it is getting more small as you keep on puting and buying new things. Our house in the province is so airy, near the mountain, and there are plants around the house. It was a two hour ride from the city and I used to go home only once in a while. But if given another chance to have another unit, I want it clutter free. I want everything in order, but with the busy things that we are in I cannot just make it as I wanted it to be. Nice decor.

Hello...and thanks for your input. I appreciate your views and apologize for my tardy reply. My hubby and I have been busy with work commitments and I have not had a spare moment to be here.

Anyway, I am doing my best to respond to every response...even if it is months after the original discussion.

I appreciate your desire for a clutter free house. I think clutter is also subjective. We have a considerable amount of collectibles in our home...and yes, it is quite spacious so we are able to display our memorabilia without it feeling cluttered to us.

Thanks for your comments about our decor. Hope to chat again.

Best regards,
Raia
