Do you have a lot of personal stuff at work? |
|
I am replacing someone for maternity leave in a sizable company and my colleagues insist that I should sit in the pregrant woman's seat. Gosh, I wasn't really amused by the idea because she has so much personal stuff on her desk and it's not even funny. A few stuffed animals, tons of pictures of her (with friends and families), some skin care items and others...etc. Well, I am a contract staff and of course I wouldn't bring so much personal stuff to work. But from what I remember, when I had my permanent job, I only brought a couple of personal stuff to work. What about you?

1. Sillychick (2133) | 2 years ago | I never brought a lot of personal stuff to work. Usually just a few pictures of my husband and family. And a calendar. But I can understand why people might. I used to work in a company where I had a cubicle, and I spent the greater part of my day sitting there. It would be depressing to look at the bare gray walls of the cube all day. So lots of people personalized it. They didn't necessarily bring everything at once, but accumulate it gradually over time.

2. luvstochat (6679) | 2 years ago | I have all of my personal stuff at home. I am a stay at home mom so all of my personal stuff is at my work lol. Someimes I think being a stay at home mom is harder than actually haveing a full time job as I have done both so I know what both are like. I could never run a daycare I don't have that much patience for the things kids come up with.

3. writersedge (4420) | 2 years ago | I never had a desk that I didn't have to share with someone on the next shift and I worked in a prison, so personal stuff was against the rules for our own personal safety except some skin lotion because it was very dry there. We had to keep that in a locked drawer so no one could squirt it in our eyes. Then only use it when the inmates were back in their bunks. So, what personal stuff?
If I ever get an office where I can have personal stuff, food and plants will be there. Take care

wondericequeen (4413) | 2 years ago | Oh, I have put some food in my drawer as well! I tend to get hungry very easily when I am at work*laughs*.

4. youless (15279) | 2 years ago | It sounds like your colleague who has maternity leave enjoys working in this company as she has so many personal stuff there:) In the past when I started to work here, I didn't bring any personal stuff at all, even if just a cup. At that time I bought a bottle drink and I used it as my cup. I did so as I wasn't sure whether I liked working here. If I found I didn't like working there later, why I had to bring so many stuff there and later bring them back to home? After a few months, my personal stuff got a little bit. Right now I have my family photo and some personal stuff there. That means to say that I am still going to work here:)

wondericequeen (4413) | 2 years ago | That's true! I think you are right that when people enjoy working in one place, they tend to "personalize" their seats!

5. drannhh (7498) | 2 years ago | Generally not, but at one job I once had a small aquarium with 22 baby fish. This was a temporary arrangement as my most prolific mama fish had given birth to more than 200 little ones in one day and we didn't have tanks big enough for all of them, so as a few coworkers were interested in adopting a few, we shared. That work place was trying to be progressive for a short time, so we took full advantage of it, lol. Actually they bought lovely plants in for everyone's cubicle and hired a gardener to come in and look after them. As I say, for a while. It was nice while it lasted.
The worse case of abuse of personal stuff in a workplace was when I job-shared with a secretary at one place and she left all of her filthy stuff all over the desk and floor and bookshelves, and I am a neat-nik and like the desktop clean and open. The worst thing, though, was that she filed backwards! Whenever the boss called for a client file, if the customer's name started with A, I would have to look in Z! She had all of her kid's pictures neatly framed on the wall, which was OK, but then clients would come in and Oooh and Aaah and say "Are those your children?' Pfffft!

wondericequeen (4413) | 2 years ago | Hanging family photos on the WALL? Wow, that's really something. I haven't heard anyone done that around here before, and if someone did, I think the boss would freak out*laughs*.

wondericequeen (4413) | 2 years ago | I think hand cream is a must, it tends to be very dry in the office, I put on a lot of hand cream at work too!

7. Ishtara (474) | 2 years ago | I didn't think I had much personal stuff in my last job... until I had to leave in a hurry. I had the usual hand cream, sweets, etc, as well as a phone charger, headphones, and a whole heap of paperwork for my studies. I had to return a week after I was fired, not only to drop off my key and staff card but to pick up the rest of my stuff -- and I still left some things behind! I think the biggest problem was that becuase it was the buying department for a retail chain, we got a lot of freebies and a lot of it I just kept at my desk. I've learnt my lesson now, and now I have a box under my desk which is all the personal stuff I'm allowing myself to keep here.

wondericequeen (4413) | 2 years ago | Right that's always my concern to pack up BUNCH of stuff when I am asked to leave immediately! I always imagine the situation and I guess that's why it holds me back from bringing a lot of stuff to office*smiles*.

8. aseretdd (6857) | 2 years ago | I admit that when i worked for a company for 7 seven... i realized i had so many stuff there when i resigned... i had to like go back three times just to clear my table... so i learned my lesson well... i don't only take things that i really need in the office... like 1 mug, 1 small pillow, and alchohol... i never want to turn my table into my home extension again...
I also refrain form putting any pictures on my table...

9. tigerdragon (2986) | 2 years ago | i don't usually bring my personal stuff to work so i can draw the line between my personal and professional life. that helps a lot in my relaxation when i am at home. i do nto even bring work at home, i live it in the office because that can be done during office hours.
