Do You Shop At GoodWill Or Other Second-Hand Stores?? |
|
My hubby needed some now pants for work so he wouldn't have to wear his good ones and ruin them. He works in a place where his clothes get really dirty. I didn't like the idea of spending like $25 for a pair of work jeans so my best friend told me to go to GoodWill because they have decint clothes for decent prices. Iwas amazed at what I found there. I actually got 3 pairs of Levis with the tags still on them and only paid 30 for all 3 pairs. They had a lot of clothes there that were still tagged with the original tags so I definately will shop there again. Do you shop at second had stores? Why or why not?

2. OreoCookie3 (19213) | 2 years ago | I stopped at our goodwill today and got my daughter a cute Tweety sweatshirt. It is red and has a big picture of Tweety saying something. I got a small rug. For the two items I paid less than $8. I wanted this cute teddy bear, he was big and would have looked great on my bed, but when I saw that the price was $7.81 I said forget it. I would have taken it if it was $5, but I couldn't justify paying so much for a used teddy bear in fair condition.

dfinster (1860) | 2 years ago | I agree that the price was too high, but the Tweety sweatshirt sounds cute. My daughter loved Tweetybird when she was little.

Polly1 (8581) | 2 years ago | Oreo, when you see something like that, offer them less. Chances are they will say ok, they want to move inventory. You can bargain anywhere, I will even bargain at Walmarts. If its something I want, its a display model or something is wrong or it might have some dirt on it. Call a manager and just ask, all they can do is say no.
| |
|
|
OreoCookie3 (19213) | 2 years ago | You're kidding! You bargain at Walmart? I didn't even think of bargaining at Goodwill. I wanted that cute bear too.. but when I said it was too much for me, she didn't offer me less... and I didn't offer. Now you taught me something.
Thanks! Cookie

3. sizzle3000 (2574) | 2 years ago | I have no problem with buying at second hands stores. I love to save money any way I can. Here we have goodwill and the thrift store. These stores start out high on their clothese however, when they don't sell they mark them down. I have been lucky to find dress clothes as well as costumes for holloween in stores like this.
I also love to go yard saling in the summer time. These are individual people trying to get rid of clothes that don't fit any more and are just taking up space. You can get all types of things at yard sales for really good prices. I have been lucky to get jeans for me at fifty cents a piece. I am a big woman and for me to go into a store any buy clothes it costs a lot. I have found some great deals at yard sales. However, yard sales only happen in my state in the summer months. I have been able to buy cd's as well as dvd's at yard sales too. I love to save money. The less I have to pay for something I need the more I have to spend on something else.
The only advice I have for people who buy clothes second hand or at yard sales is to wash they very good. I am not saying that the stores don't wash them or that the people at the yard sale are dirty. It is just better to be safe than sorry.

dfinster (1860) | 2 years ago | Where I live we call it rummage saling instead of yard saling. Every May the town that we live in has a whole weekend where everyone in town has a community wide rummage sale. I love to go from house to house and find a bunch of great deals. I always get lucky and find a few things that I really like for next to nothing.

4. angelface23 (1944) | 2 years ago | I love, love, love Goodwill!! I was just there a couple weeks ago. I never bought clothes from there before, just knick-knacks and furniture but I found a faux fur coat for $20 and when I got the register I guess they were having some kind of 1/2 off sale so I got it for $5!!! It is freaking awesome! I got a pair of old Navy pants for work too. I don't recall how much they were though. I think like $3.

5. jillbeth (2224) | 2 years ago | I very seldom buy new clothing. I love secondhand stores and thrift shops and have no problem at all shopping there. I can even go one better: I buy abandoned self-storage units at public auction, and have found lots of stuff the family can use, furniture, clothing, baby supplies, sporting goods, etc. What we can't use, I sell at yard sales or ebay, and anything that doesn't sell goes to the local thrift shop. I've even considered opening my own secondhand shop.

8. Sillychick (2137) | 2 years ago | Sure, second hand stores have some good stuff. And you can't beat the prices. Sometimes I have found stuff that was not in very good condition, but most times they do a good job of making sure the things they sell are nice and not stained or torn.
I love to shop for books and small furniture, too. I got a nice set of patio furniture once, and I still have them. I forget how much I paid, but it wasn't much.

dfinster (1860) | 2 years ago | Wow! A patio set?? That's unbelievable. We got rid of ours last spring and didn't hasve one over the summer which I really missed. I'll have to keep my eyes open for stuff like that.

| 9. star2316 (38) | 2 years ago | I most definately do shop at second hand stores. They have great deals on clothes and some of them are brand new like you said. Sometimes you can find very unique items that you can not find anywhere else. A lot of people look at these stores as a place for the homeless but they are not. I love stores like the Goodwill. You never know what you will find.

|
dfinster (1860) | 2 years ago | I know what you mean about people looking down their noses at these stores but to me it's the same as buying clothes from a rummage sale. All you need to do is wash them before you wear them. Heck I say if people have money to waste by spending $30 for a pair of work pants that are just going to get trashed then more power to them. I can't justify spending that much for something like that. Thanks for your response and welcome to MyLot. Hope to see you in the future discussions.~D

10. gemini_rose (10213) | 2 years ago | When I was growing up, it was not the done thing to go in a second hand store at all, and if you were seen going in by school friends or anyone that knew you, then you were setting yourself up for being picked on! However as I am now all grown up and have been for some time this no longer bothers me and so if I want to go in then I will. I have had some fantastic things as well, I have had loads of brand new clothes, many with designer labels for literally nothing. I also like to get my books from there and knitting wool, and every so often my little ones like to have a look for toys and things. Brilliant they are at times!
