They are protrayed this way because of movies mainly. I honestly don't know much about witches, I know there is good and bad. I know nothing about their practices or beliefs. But as for your question, movies is the culprit or at least for the most part.

Think about it in The Wizzard of Oz the evil witch is green with a long nose and a wart on her nose. I dont see that when I look in the mirror ither I just see me as I am. It is the stupid wqriters of movies and television that make us out to be evil when all we want is peace. It makes me sick.

They are portrayed that way because of the way the movies show them as old and ugly hags,but not so long aago I saw a movie about witches which was more modern and the witches as well (dont remember the name of the film)

Because of a combination of superstions, 'rational' people telling everyone witches don't exist, storybooks, movies, and what the church did waaaay back in the day lol.

It's silly,but it's just one more minor annoyance we'll have to live with I suppose. I've met several exceptionally pretty witches, and though I'll never call myself beautiful, I'm not exactly ugly either. Everyone different. I'm sure there are a few Crones who fit the stereotype, but they're rather cute in their way..so *shrugs*
