Piano Lessons |
|
Do you play the piano? When did you start learning? Did you take formal lessons? I would like my children to play an instrument and I think piano is an ideal starting point. At what age do you think it is an ideal time to start lessons?

2. lordwarwizard (9035) | 5 months ago | You guys are so fortunate! Learning how to play the piano, huh? I had dreams of that when I was young but I never got the chance. However, I doubt I have the talent for it though. My fingers are just not that nimble. I can sing pretty decently though so at least, I am not cut out from the world of music.:P

Modestah (7288) | 5 months ago | My eldest child missed out on it - as we were always dirt poor. he would have done quite well to have had voice lessons, he has a natural talent for singing. my youngest seems to have a natural ear towards music and I would love to groom her into it.

3. cr0ssf41r13 (557) | 5 months ago | Yes, I play the piano though I stopped taking piano lessons four years ago. I took formal piano lessons and even had recitals. Though I only achieved until second grade of the so-called lessons. I study the piano together with my cousin and we thought this talent would be useful for our church if we render it as our service. If your child has talent, then, you could start at 8 years old or younger. All you need is to orient your kid with the piano and if he likes it, then, you're lucky. You don't need to buy the piano. If the child doesn't want the piano thing, then, you could try orienting him some time later when he's more open-minded and willing.

4. jillhill (5505) | 5 months ago | I started when I was in first grade. I only had a few lessons before I broke my arm and so I didn't get any more. It's one thing that I wish I had learned to do. I think it's the most wonderful thing to give lessons to your kids.

5. dfn12968 (5595) | 5 months ago | I dont, but I really wish I did. My piano story is depressing, at least to me. When I was in grade school, all my friends took lessons from the same teacher and they loved her. I always wanted to take lessons and of course wanted the same teacher my friends had. So, my parents finally bought a piano, and I went to sign up for lessons. Well, the teacher was booked and had no openings, so instead of her, I got this man who was just horrible. He smelled awful, and he was just so odd. I took lessons for four months and for the next 8 years my piano sat in the living room untouched. When I was ready for my first car, we sold the piano to pay for it. I got in an accident 6 months later and totalled the car!:( So, no piano, no car, and something that I have always regretted. I probably started when I was ten, but I bet the earlier the better. I still aspire to learn someday.

7. kimbers867 (909) | 5 months ago | My daughter is 11 and was introduced to the piano this past fall in music class. She really picked it up. Even her teacher commented on it. So we bought her an electric keyboard for Christmas. I want her to take lessons but she doesn't want to, UGH. So I am on the hunt for this keyboard keying chart that she was using in school to get her to continue to play at home. I was never exposed to instruments as a kid but my husband was. He can play the guitar and sing. So I am hoping to get her to continue.

8. Transdisc (12486) | 5 months ago | I took piano lessons when I was in second grade, Modestah. I didn't want to take them, but I was told that I had to take them. My instructor was not very patient and he would yell at me, which made the experience dreadful. Unfortunately for him, but fortunately for me, my instructor had a horrible accident (no, don't worry, it wasn't a horrible cheese grating accident) and was not able to continue the lessons. I wish I would have had a good experience and would have continued the lessons, as I would like to be able to play the piano now. I admit that I envy those people who can play, especially the ones who play by ear. I do love to hear them play, though.

Modestah (7288) | 5 months ago | I think it is goodto be exposed to playing an instrument - but if the child is not interested it does not seem fruitful to force it. I wonder if you would have found an aptitude and interest in some other instrument.

9. AmbiePam (10047) | 5 months ago | Both my sister and I took piano lessons. I took them from the age of 4 to the age of 15. I think age 4 is perfectly OK, as long as the parent is dedicated to the practicing. Translation is the parent has to be willing to make the child play even when they whine and cry.: ) I can play the piano, but I don't like to. My sister on the other hand loves it. I would advise you something that might save you money. If the child still doesn't like it after 5 earnest years of practicing, you might want to let them stop the lessons. My poor parents, lol. I did what I was told, but I hated it and never have used the piano. I'm no where near as good as my sister. Truthfully, I'm not that good at all.

Modestah (7288) | 5 months ago | aw, I think you hit on something here - if the individual does not have an interest in something it does not matter how much knowledge and practice they have in it, they likely will not thrive in the subject... your sister had only one thing that you lacked, the interest.

10. byfaithonly (5356) | 5 months ago | I took piano lessons when I was 10 or 11 for about 2 years then I talked my mom into letting me quit - I've reqretted it ever since:( My 2 younger sisters both started around 5 or 6 and took them for longer than I did - one now gives lessions occasionally and could be a concert pianist if she wanted.

Modestah (7288) | 5 months ago | wow. impressive on your sister. I am sorry you have regrets. hindsight and all. I think it is great that a person can make or supplement their living by giving lessons on such a thing as a hobby or interest....
