Paperback or Hardback?  email this discussion to a friend?

Of the books you've purchased, do you prefer to buy paperbacks or hardbacks? Unless I "OMG, have to have it right this second!!!", then I usually just wait for the paperback. The only hardbacks I have are a couple from the Harry Potter series, since I pre-ordered them. Paperbacks are so much cheaper, but don't hold up as well. What's your preference?

I prefer to buy hardbacks of my favorite authors, but with the way prices are on books, I usually have to wait for paperbacks. The authors that have me anxiously awaiting their next novel are usually the ones that I'll go ahead and splurge. Or, if I know I'll read the book more than once and it will become an old and trusted friend, I'll splurge. New authors (to me anyway - LOL) or books that I'll read once and never touch again - paperback all the way. Down here, we have a fabulous chain - Half Price Books, and I can usually find most hardbacks (at half price) about 2 weeks to a month after the publication date.

I prefer to buy paperbacks but some of the books I have read lately are hard cover. Paperbacks are easier to handle but hard cover books last longer and are worth more for resale. I belong to a book swapping site, so I rarely buy books unless I cant wait for it to come out through the website, most of the time I just add myself to the waiting list for whatever I want to read.

That's neat that you participate in a book swap. That would be a cheaper way of obtaining books I am sure. I generally use our local library, but it has short hours so I usually can't get here on time.

They both have their pros and cons. I recently picked up a paperback of an author who I love, from a series of books he writes that I love. But then I grabbed a hard cover at the library. Though the paperback is easier to carry with me in my purse when I go to appointments and such where I may have to wait, the hardcover is easier on the eyes to read. I guess I'm getting old. Of course the paperbacks are cheaper, but you can get hardcovers cheap too if you know where to look.

My shelves are full of both.

Like you I prefer to wait for the paper back unless it's one that I absolutely want. Or I can get a very cheap copy of a hardcover book.

Yeah, if I want a hardback that isn't something I am just dying to have, I look at the clearance racks!

I prefer paperbacks to hardcovers. They are easier to take around and not as bulky or heavy as a hardcover. I am like you, if its a book that I have to read right now then I will buy the hardcover.

Normally, I don't buy a lot of books though. I do a lot of book trading and swapping on http://www.bookmooch.com and http://www.paperbackswap.com. Both are excellent places to go to get books and all you pay is the price of Media Mail shipping.

I don't really have a preference. If I really want the book right away and it's in hardbook then I'll buy the hardback version. However, I like the paperback versions because they are cheaper and since I'm on a college students budget, it's definitely my better option. The only books I have completely in hardback are the Harry Potter books. Those are the only ones I really enjoy having the hardback in.

I'm a snob about it...I only buy hardcovers unless the book doesn't come in hardcover. I have problems holding paperbacks open (arthritis). Plus, the print is too small for me.

I don't buy books unless I plan on keeping them. If I just want to read it, I get it from the Public Library. The hardbacks I get are usually used. I collect old books.

I love to own hardbound volumes of my favorite authors. I don't have the bookshelves or space of my own right now for them. But I will again at some point adn I'll go right back to collecting those.

However, for my everyday reading preference, paperbacks are fine. My friends and I go to the secondhand store where you can swap and/or buy them. And we loan them to each other. Nobody ever runs out of reading material around here!

If I absolutely have to have it when it comes out, I will buy the hard back version of the book, Kecia08. Otherwise, I usually buy the paperback version. The paperback books are also better when it comes to moving books, as they weigh a bit less.
