Do you prefer the original or the new version, and why?

I prefer the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The new version is to dark for me. I like the happy-go-lucky original. I know it's because of Johnny Depp and the director of the new one, but's it's just not the same. What do you think?

Hello! You asked me which verison is better. Well, I really can't say which one is better, they both are VERY good. However I must say the new one is true to the book. I love the book and thought the first version left out key details that made the book interesting. For example, you said Johnny Depp seemed "dark" to you. Well, that's what the book portays. I have to say the graphics and technology is very cool, too. I must say that the 2nd version is almost an exact copy of the book. I cannot imagine a movie more true to the book than that. I think Johnny Depp did an excellent job at acting for Mr Wonka. However since the original was unique with using the latest technology (at the time) it always holds a special place in my heart. I love both version, but I do think the second version is a better interpatation of the book. Pablo

Well Pablo, thanks for that great information. I didn't realize that there was a book and that the second version portrayed the book better than the original. That's interesting. Now I'll have to look for the book then watch both movies. I may have to eat my words, or something like that.

Wow, thank you SO much for giving me the "best response" that was very kind of you. Yes, I read the book in middle school. I read it again before watching the second version. It's really surprising most movies are based on books and you just don't know it Pablo

I liked the original. I enjoyed the original so much that I took a couple of kids to watch the new one...and frankly none of us enjoyed it. I got a CD of the original and got them to watch and they loved it....the songs...and the kids..everything.

That's not being silly. I'll choose the original anyday. I actually thought the new one would be better for the kids of today (since I thought they might be able to relate to it better....obviously this was before I watched the movie....and I was wrong).

Thanks for posting. Looks like the original is in the winning spot still........not that this is a race - it's just me being silly!

I love the older version the best. I love Gene Wilder in anything and he is just odd enough that this is the perfect role for him. He is just so funny. My daughter also prefers the older one. She thinks that the Oompaloompas are better in the old one.

Thanks for the post. I'm sure that the teenagers are the ones that like the newer version better. Maybe some of the people in their 20's too. Those of us that have grown up with the original, the new one will never do.

I love Johnny Depp and everything but I will always like the original. I don't know why but the new version was kind of...I can't find a word but it wasn't as engaging to me as the original was. But oh well's Johnny Depp is still the man and I love him.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I like Johnny Dep too, it's just that the dark side of him didn't belong in this movie. I know Tim Burton was the reason it happened that way. I just wish Tim could have had Johnny play the role in a more upbeat way, that's all.

Yeah your right about that Johnny should have played it a little bit more upbeat.

I like both, but I don't think anything will ever beat the original. The new one is edgy and kinda cool, but the original movie is much more charming and classic. :]

Absolutely the original!! The remake, imo, was stupid. Now, my daughter enjoyed it and talked me into watching it again. I went in with lower expectations, of course, so I was able to enjoy a couple of the quirky parts a little more..but it was still just 'ok'. Not even close to comparing in any way to the original. And I hate the oompa loompa guy in the new version. If I remember correctly, though, I did like the ending in the new one.

Definitely didn't like the oompa loompa in the new one, I agree. I don't remember the end, so I'm not sure about that. Thanks for posting.

The only thing I didn't like about the remake is the fact that they used computer effects to make one man turn into hundreds of Oompa Loompas. I thought that was so cheap. Johnny Depp was hot, though. lol :D
