Do You Ever Hang On To Old Things, Even Though You Know It's Silly To?

I just did a discussion about spring cleaning and the idea is that I really want to go through things with a fine tooth comb and get rid of a lot of stuff, including a lot of old papers that I just don't need anymore.
But are you like me? Do you find that there are some things, even though you realize you really don't need it or them anymore, you just can't part with, maybe for some weird sentimental reason?
With me I STILL have a lot of my old college term papers..I managed to do very well with term papers and yes, always got A's on them--they ranged from topics in geology, anthropology, art history, Egyptology, etc. Since I graduated college..gasps..in 1977, these papers are more than thirty years old...and yes, I know it's dumb to keep them, but somehow just can't part with.
So are you like me? You keep something even though there's really no need to, but you just can't part with??

There are few things I just won't part with like, my grandmother quilts she made/quilted and gave to me; anything else she's given me like plates, glassware, etc.
I am thirty some and I finally got rid of my security blanket, you know that one you get then you're two or three and it goes everywhere with you...well up until huricane Katrina I still had mine and then decided I would donate it because I have loads of blankets and those people certainly needed them more than I did, so finally it is gone (my hubby is so happy!)
I also still have all my term papers from high school. I might throw them away after my boys graduate high school. and I guess I still have some little things tucked away in my little trunk from high school days.
A better idea would be to take pictures of some of those things and scrapbook them (takes up less space that way).
I need to clean out things as well, just hard to part with some of them, like you said.

Yes, I'm exactly the same as you, my friend. I hoard things to the extreme. I hate to throw things out... I always say to myself that this or that will come in useful someday, and it stays put. I take after my Dad, I think. He was a terrible hoarder. lol.
Brightest Blessings. x

Unfortunately I tend to keep absolutely everything, to the extent that the house is full of *stuff* and despite my efforts to clear it all out, I can't help holding onto some things. For some strange reason I seem feel that bank statements from 2000 are important - LOL

I can't bring myself to part with my classical guitar either...got it when I was in high school..haven't played in years and it hangs up on the wall in my bedroom...always with the thought that in the back of my mind...will play again one day.
When I was a kid I wanted to be an Egyptologist...did you know though that there really isn't an archeology dept that has Egyptology here in America? To study something like that you have to go to a British university or of course Egypt!

I can see keeping them. Maybe you could post them in full or in part on some site (like Gather) I have seen some very good historical pieces on there.(as well as some silliness) I wish that I had the poetry I wrote in high school and college. I think I would like it still. I do have some things that are hard to part with, like clothes that have memories, and little glass figurines, etc.

I had some short stories I wrote in high school that I threw out and wish I had kept. Doubt if the term paper material would be of interest at Gather though and way too long.....all my term papers were about 20 pages long...sheesh, even then I wrote a lot

I have a few things like that. Some papers i did in college are some as well. Some are twenty years old but I still have them. There are a few stuffed animals that I still have even though they are raggedy. One is a Fresca St. Bernard dog. It doesn't have the fresca can anymore but I still have the dog. It was my grandfather's so I hang on to it. The other is a teddy bear that I have repaired many times and it's been re-stuffed, but I have had it since I was 2, my great grandmother gave it to me. I also have a few books that even though I might not ever read them again I really enjoyed them as a child or a teen so I keep them for those memories.

I think I will always have the teddy bear. Yeah he might look worn and all but he is too much a part of my life. I won't ever give him up. He sits on a shelf and has a few other stuffed animals to keep him company. I think we are allowed to keep a few memories of our childhood with us, no matter how they might look or how old we become.

I still have the papers from my three years in college between 1967 and 1969. I kept them because I thought I might need to read them again... but I never did.
I did throw a lot of stuff out that I thought I would never need anymore. But you never know.
In the nineties... I did throw out a whole box of magazines on Australian Motor Racing from the seventies. Last year I discovered that if I had them today... I could get $1000 for them on eBay. I have been kicking myself from one side of the house to the other.
Without fail... everytime I throw something out... a couple of years later... or less... I wish I had not.
I know some people who keep throwing things out... and keep going back to the shop to buy it again when they need it. That's OK if you have more money than sense.

It's not like I'm a packrat or anything, but I have tons of stuff that I've kept. Mostly sentimental things like any cards I've ever gotten for birthdays, Christmas, Anniversay, etc. Then there's the shoebox with love letters, another shoebox with rings and trinkets from boyfriends. I have both of my Grandmothers old jewelry boxes. Diaries starting from when I was about 9yrs old until the 90's. (Some of the stuff in there would probly make a good book, especialy the 70's and 80's!!)Concert ticket stubs and programs from concerts in 70's and 80's. Old school work my Dad kept and recently gave to me. Newspapers with important headlines. Some fashion magazines. You know what, now I'm thinking I need to go clean my closet. It's starting to sound like alot of stuff!!! #:)

Wow you still have diaries from so far back? Funny, even though I'm bit of a writer I never kept diaries until fairly recently, but yes I've kept them as well...my "story" might be a good book to write as well and those "journals" might come in handy. Oh, yup..I have a number of old tickets stubs, programs and playbills from concerts, plays and so forth too

yeah, i graduated more than a year ago.. and though most of my papers were lent out to my friends in other universities, and my flashdisk which carry their softcopy was lost, my room is still a big clutter.. even my readings from college are safely intact in my room... my notebooks are still there.. i even find it hard to throw sheets of papers with songs or poems even though i can easily find and reprint them from the net.. it seems like if i throw them away, i rob myself of one fine day decades from today happily scanning all these things and remind me of how it used to be...

I think that's why we all tend to keep things as it is a part of our past and maybe days when we were a little more carefree??? Sort of a nostalgia thing??

I just got done cursing and swearing at myself for all the things I have that I just CANNOT PART WITH!!!
I moved 99% of my things into my new house yesterday. (There is no adequate way to thank the generous people who provided the muscle power to unload that 26 foot U-Haul of mostly "Why am I keeping this" stuff.)
As I was trying to pack up all this stuff I have ... GRRRRR!!!
I have books, boxes and boxes of books (5500 to 6000 but who's counting???)
I have three ring binders from my former job that I just could not let them throw out. They were all perfectly good and really sturdy because they are really, really old. They aren't the wimpy binders that are being made now.
I have binders (not the binders I saved but wimpy purchased binders) of information I have printed off from the internet that I have as yet to read. (Hoping to do that while sitting on the veranda of my new house.)
I have ....
lots of old things that make absolutely no sense to keep.
And I just can't let them go.
So they all moved with me. Everything. The only things I could bring myself to dispose of were two glass dishes that were chipped and had the potential to cut someone. But it was tough to do. And I put 15 or so plastic water bottles (small cute green bottles) in the recycle bins. Almost went back to get them out because I could possibly need/use them some day in the far distant future. Especially the yellow caps. Yellow caps would be very valuable for making something stand out!!!
And then there is the furniture from others that I could not refuse. The furniture is older and needs a good appreciative home. So of course I took it. And this is just the first load. I have more "in-need-of-a-home" furniture on its way from my sister in Saskatchewan.
Bottom line is, I can't stand to throw away something that is useful, can potentially be useful, or that is no longer wanted where it was.
Things I have to work on or I won't have much space in my house.

I haven't hung onto much from my childhood. I have a stuffed Curious George that was given to me way back when I was round 4 or 5. My dad and I built a guitar for music class that I got an A+ on back in grade school that I'll always treasure. Still plays after all these years. I might replace the fishing string on it with real guitar strings someday. Course, I still have all my yearbooks as well. That's bout it.

Oh yes!! In fact I had some notes from my friends that we passed in high school 20 years ago, letters from ex-boyfriends, I had them all in an accordion file. My hubby knew about them, he didn't care.
I just made myself throw them away about a year ago. I think we all hold on to stuff to help remind us of the past, no matter how important or silly those things that we hold onto are to us

I hold on to some things I don't need because they have sentimental value, and make me think of a person or time in my life that made me happy. I have a few ordinary items that belonged to my dad, as well as a very old and broken laptop computer that was his. For some reason I can't bear to throw it out, I guess because I still miss him and it reminds me of visiting him and playing games on it. He was the one who got me interested in computers when I was a kid, too.
