Embarrassed of reading "Children's Books"

So I'm currently reading the children's series "Spiderwick Chronicles." I got interested in reading this series when I saw the movie trailer on TV, and I'm a huge fan of reading the books before seeing the movie. SO I go down to my library to get the books, and the librarian is acting all snooty to me since I'm looking for books in the children's section (and having a hard time finding them because they're misplaced!) She even mentioned that they have a very nice selection of books over in the "Fiction" section on the "general library" side! I honestly started feeling a little embarrassed. Do you think it's something to be embarrassed about - reading children's books (instead of "adult" books, I guess?) This is the first time I've decided to read a series meant for kids (well, except Harry Potter, but those are arguably not children's books.) How would you have responded to this libarian?

That librarian was way out of line. There is nothing wrong with reading children's books. I don't care if you are 2 or a 102 books are meant to be read and enjoyed by anyone who wants to read them. Besides that the librarian had no idea if you were looking for books for yourself, your child, or maybe even for your students (if you were a teacher). She assumed and that is the worst thing anyone can do. Now with a recent case of a man assaulting a boy in the children's section I can understand them keeping an eye on lone adults in that area. However keeping an eye on them and insulting them are two different matters. What she did crossed the line and if I had been in your position I would have told her so. I would have stated "Yes I know where the others are. I know what I am doing and this is the area I need to find the books I want." I would have then continued to find what I was looking for. For myself I read all age books. I have many here that are considered "Young Adult" and I have found some fantastic books in that area at the library. One excellent vampire book called "The Silver Kiss" (I forget the author) is in the children's section at our library. My thought is if you enjoy the stories who cares what label is placed on them. The important thing is that they are read and enjoyed. I'm sure that is what is more important to the author as well.

I can understand why it bothered you. I would have been upset as well. She should never have acted that way. She might have been defensive since the books were shelved wrong but that is no reason to take it out on you. I was thinking after I had posted what if you had just been learning how to read and those were the only type you could handle yet. She might have caused you not to bother. My thought is we should encourage everyone to read, whatever they may want to. I don't know what type of books you like but there are many good authors in the "Young Adult" section; Lois Duncan and Christopher Pike, are two that come to mind. Thank you also for best response. That was nice to see

Thank you so much for your input. I really shouldn't have let her bother me - maybe I was feeling unsecure since it was my first time venturing into that area of the library. Also, I've considered maybe she thought I was insulting her "libarian skills" since the books were misplaced? I don't know. I read the book, and I really enjoyed it; and that's really all that matters!

Hi. Well, I only say "thank you but I want to read what I want to read. Don't care about age. Do you care?". I like, sometimes, to read good books for children, so what? It is fun, nothing to feel embarrassed. I read many books for children and love Harry Potter series and Lord Of The Rings and many more. It is better than don't read nothing. Sometimes we need to relax our minds and it is a good way to do that. I love reading and read many serious books but come on, I like to have fun too. Don't care about this. cheers

Well, I just told her I wanted to read the books before I saw the movie, and she just responded, "Hmmm." Maybe it was more the lady and not me!

No, there's nothing to be embarrassed about and it's only the attitude of others that makes it embarrassing. I love children's books, and even though it is a little awkward to go into the children's section of the bookstore, I do it because I don't want to let any embarrassment keep me from discovering a new find. And, I'm not embarrassed about reading the books, just going to the section where they're kept. And, it's disgusting that a librarian, of all people, should make anyone feel embarrassed about anything they read. The librarian is a snob.

Wow. Well don't worry about it and you should not feel embarassed about that. At least your not rude and obnoxious. I still read children books and I don't really care what people think. The Spiderwick Chronicles is actually on my books to read list along with the Golden Compass and some other books. I would have told her that I want to read that book and not something else in the fiction section.

There is absolutely nothing wrong at all with reading childrens books, especially not ones like spiderwick chronicles, they are not just aimed at children anyway they are aimed at families. I want to read the golden compass and I would not mind reading the spiderwick chronicles either!! I would have said yes, I am aware of the books that there are in this library but I want to read these books this time thank you!!

I've actually enjoyed reading the series - it's very light, not serious at all, and just the easy reading I've been needing since I'm in graduate school and reading so many research articles. I know her attitude shouldn't bother me, but I've just found myself dreading going back to the library for the next book in the series.

that was rude and unprofessional of the librarian. don't be embarrased to read children's books. A lot of children and young adult literature can be enjoyed by adults, some even refer to things only an adult might understand. an adult wrote the children's book in the first place. there really is no reason to be embarrassed or ashamed

I don't think it is anything to be embarrassed about, but I know how you feel. I feel that way when I go to the childrens DVD section sometimes, but a lot of the childrens movies are funny and cute. I would like to read the spiderwick chronicles also, it looks very interesting.

Embarrassed about reading children's books? Pfft... I embarrass myself more without reading them. I enjoy them sometimes. There are many wonderful stories written by authors. And many times those stories aren't classified right. Usually the Spiderwick Chronicles are independant reader books so I think it was perfectly fine for you to read them. And why not? For all she knew you could have been getting them for someone else!

Go back and say next time....No Thank you..I'm still a kid at heart and i'm grownup enough to choose what i want to read..lets see if her mouth drops to her chin!

I don't get why the librarian was looking down her nose at you, you could have been picking up a book for your kid or anything. I don't think there is anything wrong with reading children's book on those days were you just want to forget and reminisce.

There is nothing wrong with reading children's books. I think there are many books that are written for children that are awesome to re-read as an adult. I particularly like Shel Silverstein, as well as the Harry Potter Series. As for the librarian, I would like to say I would be better than this, but I'll be honest. I would make some snotty comment along the lines of "it doesn't matter what you read, as long as you do", and moving quickly towards "maybe if I read, I won't have a closed mind like yours". I'll admit, probably not the best way to go, but that's generally how it works with me. You ask a stupid question, you get a stupid answer.

I sometimes do get embarrassed about reading books written for children. Mostly when i'm filling out my Facebook profile and all my friends have really deep, serious adult books like 'A Child Called It'. I like childrens books, they're entertaining and not very depressing. and I don't care!

Why should one be embarrassed? We all started with those books and some still are. They are what the reason of what we are now. You know what? I am also into children's books. Actually I collect some of them. I prefer the old, or vintage kinds of books because you can really learn a lot from the past era. I also love children's books with very nice illustrations. They make me look on every pages over and over again. Some of my favorite children's book illustrators are Lane Smith, David Wiesner and Maurice Sendak. I don't know why but their illustrations gives me a unique energy and sometimes inspire me in many ways. Actually I have illustrated a few children's books, and I would love to do more exciting ones in the future. It gives me another form of fulfillment whenever I illustrate a children's book.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Who do you think has to read these books to see how well they like them? Who reads these books to decided whether or not they would be marketable to children? Adults. So I don't think anything is wrong with it.

I would not be embarrassed at all. I would just have looked at her and said that I know where the fiction for adults is but that is not what I want. Her being snooty is not part of her job. Me being who I am I would have asked to talk to her boss. She is there to service people no matter if they are a adult looking for a book in the child's section. I am reading a book for young adults. It is the second book in a series. The book is called Pine Hollows and it is about young adults and the horses they ride and train. This is also light reading and very enjoyable.

I see nothing wrong with reading "children's" books. I know there a lot of books that I didn't have the opportunity to read growing up - and I enjoy reading them now.
