Ever prayed for Satan? |
|
I love Mark Twain, he has some wonderful quotes attributed to him. I just came across this one (during a search to find out why my crazy mother used to bless the mildew in the bathroom*sigh*); But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most? Well, I thought it was food for thought... anyone else?

ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | lol, why thank you. I'm curious about the responses too. I know there are a lot of people here are from a lot of different faiths, denominations, spiritual paths, philosophical inclinations... so I hope the responses will be varied and interesting. And flames are always fun... Having read a little more it seems that Twain was quite interested in Satan's plight; I have no special regard for Satan; but I can at least claim that I have no prejudice against him. It may even be that I lean a little his way, on account of his not having a fair show. All religions issue Bibles against him, and say the most injurious things about him, but we never hear his side. We have none but the evidence for the prosecution, and yet we have rendered the verdict. To my mind this is irregular. It is un-English. It is un-American; it is French. The last three words cracked me up!

ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | Have you seen what someone has put in the tags? Apparently some Christian is so offended by this idea they have had to resort to insulting me... but not in anyway that I can respond. No, they've tagged this discussion with an insult? How lame (and un-Christian) is that?

2. sutanhartanto (1521) | 3 months ago | i personally doesn't completely believe that satan really exists. anyway, let us assume that he really exists. we always think that satan is the source of sin. we think the main duty of satans is inspiring human to commit sins. so, we always blame satan if we commit sin, which is not so fair in my opinion. how can we blame others for the sin we commit? anyway, satan is poor enough. it will be very kinds of us if we can pray for him.

ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | Thanks for the response:) I said on another thread that I find the beliefs of many followers of the Abrahamic faiths to be very simplistic; God good, Devil bad, blame all good on God and blame the Devil for our sins. That takes an awful lot of praise and blame off us humans.

3. whiteheron (893) | 3 months ago | I have often thought that all would be brought together in the end, even the parts of creation that seem to be the most ugly and evil... And all will go into the love light of God... Consequently, in the past, I have prayed for the healing o that which sees itself to be broken, unholy, etc. and have prayed for its redemption, its happiness, its contentment, happiness or joy... Its liberation, knowing that in the end this healing will come.

ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | Interesting, if cryptic, response. Everything has a purpose, you think, in the greater plan?

whiteheron (893) | 3 months ago | As in a tapistry we who are the woven threads weaving ourselves in and out do not see the whole picture so we do not always know what is next or what will be the result of our actions... We act with perhaps a plan for our actions... In some belief systems we choose our own pathways to maximize our learnings here, to have more opportunity to love and to be loved, to work on aspects of the soul that wanted more experiences... This seems to be in line with the Lakota Oral Tradition that I was taught and also oddly enough with some of the Vedic or Hindu perspectives only they would say that it was our own Karma that created the life. In the Catholic perspective too, you have the belief that God is all present and that we must work out what we believe in our everyday lives, that there may be a plan but we are partners in the plan's creation. I believe that there is someone for the want of a better word, a God, a Great Spirit, Om, who sees and knows all...And because that God is the "I Am" God is present always and everywhere... there is no where where God is not present... I tend to see Satan as a flawed and pitiful creation... one who has limited knowledge and limited understanding and who in the end suffers defeat... He is blamed for so much and yet he does so little... People want to escape their karma, their responsibility for their own actions and they use that one to do it. There are forces both good and bad here that delight in swinging things in a certain direction but they are unable to do much without willingness either way. It is best to follow a right pathway and it brings more happiness. Is this less cryptic?

ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | lol, yes, much less cryptic. I'll see if I can get my teeth into a decent response at some point... when this migraine isn't eating at my skull.

Perhaps if more ppl did pray for him some of the evil things happening would stop. Just a thought. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

6. freethinkingagent (246) | 3 months ago | I would prey for Satan if there were any hope for him. But the preyers would be in vain. For one to repent and be saved, one must admit they were wrong. It is like the first mate on a nuclear submarine. The captain has orders to launch, the first mate doesn't want for what ever reason, he leads a mutany among the crew and beliving they are right the rebel. The rebelion is squashed, and sentnceing is held off for a while. You got to the captain and ask for clemancy for the first mate. He says okay, but he must admit he was wrong. So you go to the first mate and say admit you were wrong and the captian will for give you. He says to you, I have nothing to be ashamed of, I did what i belived was right, no the captain must admit he is wrong. So you see, the reason no one preys for Satan is because all that is need for satan tro do is admit he was wrong and submit to God.

ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | The same can be said for an 'sinner' yet people pray for them all the time; pray that they ask for forgiveness, that God turns them towards asking for forgiveness (which negates free will, does it not?).
| |
|
|
freethinkingagent (246) | 3 months ago | Exactly, One can not negate free will. You can prey that a 'sinner' repents, but this will not happen untill the person concerned feels a need to repen. The rpoper responce to preying for a siiner would be a preyer asking God to let you be used to show this person that they are worng. Why would someone think they were wrong, if they looked out and saw someone just like them, doing the same things as them, and yet this other person says you must repent. You don't prey that God changes the other person. You prey for change in yourself so that it will be a guide to the other person.

|
ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | Excellently put, and yes I agree with you on most points. However, people do pray that one sinner or another change there ways or ask for forgiveness. I'm more curious about whether or not they have prayed for Satan to be forgiven. My beliefs on Lucifer, good/evil and the actions of God are pretty much a mute point in this discussion... I'm just curious as to other people's opinions and playing Devil's advocate (no pun intended).
| |
|
|
freethinkingagent (246) | 3 months ago | Devils advocate, LOL! He will need a good one,,, One might therfore say that, Satan needs Jesus? But your question does have marit as we are to "prey for our enamies", What worse enamy do we have than the Advosary. Maybe if all prey for the salvation and changing of Satans heart we can just bypass that whole tribulation period and hell and such? things tha make you say Hummmm...

7. vonkristoffer (193) | 3 months ago | meeen... if you pray to satan he will really hear you and give you what you want but in exchange of your soul.. because he is the prince of this world and he owns this world. remember when he temps Jesus Christ... he will give you everything in this world... i mean everything... if you want to be tormented day and night eternally then pray to him...:) and actually we are the ones who are accountable on our sins.. don't blame satan... if you fall into him don't blame him its your own choice...

ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | Not praying TO Satan, praying to God FOR Satan.
| |
|
|
freethinkingagent (246) | 3 months ago | Von he is asking about preying for the salvation of Satan. Have you ever preyed that God would forgive Satan, or change the heart of Satan. Actualty I kinda lean toward preying to Satan in this case, I mean Why not prey to Satan that he has a change of heart, and that he reconciles himself to God. Why could we not prey to Satan and ask him this?
| |
|
|
ShardAerliss (579) | 3 months ago | Genius point agent! If Satan can indeed hear our prayers then why not ask him to ask God for forgiveness and save himself? Maybe that would just annoy him...

8. ljegbers (5254) | 3 months ago | You know you are absolutely right. To pray for a sinner, the true sinner is to want to help in their healing. There is a great defense here that goes unrecognized. I wonder if praying for protection and praying for the true sinner himself would make a difference. You are so right in giving this quote. Much is lost in the translation and practice that the simple basics of the who and why are lost. I can say this is an eye opener for me and I'll reverse my prayers because the one that needs them most of all is often over looked.
