Today I was serving my customers and a lovely elderly lady handed me a £1 after paying for her shopping!! She does this often and I feel bad about taking it as there is no need for her to offer this. Also when I worked at Butlins in the bars we often got tips especially at adult weekends. So do you ever recieve a tip while at work?? Do you often tip workers?? I know waiters/waitresses get tips but do you tip other workers??

Well, as I do not work I do not really apply to this discussion, but my son works for my mum, who has her own tearooms and they have a tips jar there and all the tips that everyone gets goes into a this jar. Then every month just before payday my Mum splits the lot between them and they each come away with about £15 -£20 each, there are about 6 - 8 working there I think so they do really well with tippers there!!

We used to do this at the nursery, we had a big baby's bottle as a tip jar!! Its amazing how much we got over the year!!

i have not really worked in a environment which they people can give me tips....but there was one time that my boss told me to accompany one client to go to a business meeting and after taking the client to the place...the client gave me 100 dollars as a tip...

Bet you were pleased to have accompanied that business client to the meeting place!! Did you feel that you had to accept the tip money or did you try and refuse it first??

I used to get a few tips when I was still working in the pub! When I go in for a visit and I am having a drink (which doesn't happen often) I am usually bought more drink than I can drink - and that is a lot! lol I also believe in tipping but only if someone is friendly and helpful, taxi drivers, waitresses, hairdressers etc I always think if someone does a great job it is nice to tip them , even if it is not a lot it is more about making them feel appreciated than anything! xxx

That doesn't sound very fair at all! I would have been ok as I do like lager and cider but it still isn't very fair! My boss has always allowed us to take the money for a drink if we don't actually want a drink or if we have a few already marked down. xxx

I'm sure she is trying to be sweet. Seniors and elderly people often pride themselves in being independent even at advanced age. Giving a tip is just a way of saying, "Thank you!"

Tips aren't that uncommon. Waiting and bar staff are the most well known, but "Keep the change" happens with lots of jobs.

I know waiters and waiteresses are known for getting tips but I was wondering of people in other jobs get any tips!! We often get 'keep the change' when its a penny change!! This I just leave in my till as our store doesnt have a charity box, well not all the time!

The definition of a TIP is "To Insure Promptness" Anything given as a tip is just designed to make that perosn do the work with more care and be prompt always. I amsure you will always remember the lady who gave you $1 tip and will alwasy treat her with courtesy. Accept it as such and do not read too much in it. Don't feel embarassed while taking a TIP.

I wasn't embarrassed about the lady giving me £1, I always treat my customers with courtesy - it was the way I was brought up. I did accept the tip and didn't read much into it. My discussion was asking if many people have received tips and do they give tips out often. If so who are the people they tip. Thanks for your comments x

no i really can not afford to tip workers, but i do put in a nice word to their managers if i feel they have been great.i never get a tip in my job,but get offered the odd lollie or chocolate,as i am probably the most feared person you see in a hospital.i am a blood collector,so no-one is going to tip me for hurting them.lol.cheers sue

Hello! I am also s worker. I usually receive tips from the customers. But you know, i myself often give tips to anyone that rendering good service to me. I've accept the tips that were given to me as long as i did not demands from them. If it is heartily given to me, why not, nothing wrong with that.
