I am not trying to be critical but I truly want to know (I have asked some folks before) why they place [em] before and after some words this is completley new to me and im realy wanting to know?

That's how one smiley looks in the code (only with a space separating it so it wouldn't turn into a smiley.

It's the myLot code.
If you're reading here on the site, it usually shows up fine like this:
... but if you're reading it in your email it will show up like this:
[ em ] happy [ /em ]
(without the spaces).

..I think those are the mylot tags, but in mail they show up that way..

They are trying to use the MyLot code but for some reason it's not working for them.

They are trying to bring up an emoticon in their discussion, problem is there isn't a smiley for each emotion here. When they place a word in between those [em]'s that the MyLot system doesn't recognize, then it will just print the word with those brackets around it.
