When I was in school we did a lot of field trips. Museums, parks, Police Station, Fire Department and factories. One of the ones I remember best is a tape factory we went to. I thought it was fascinating to see how they did it all. We all had a blast and even got a free role of tape to take home…I had mine for years.
I don’t see a lot of kids going on these types of field trips anymore. Mostly they go to places like the city pool, Six Flags, Branson, the park, the pumpkin patch and bowling. I think some kids would get a lot more learning out of the old field trips…the new ones seem more like play time then learning chances. Some of the field trips I probably wouldn’t let my kids go to…if I had kids…ones like to a pool, Six Flags, Branson…unless there were tons of supervisors with them. I’d hate for my kid to drown, get snatched or lost.
Did you ever go on field trips? Do your kids go on them? What kinds do you think are better? Are there any you wouldn’t let them go on?

I can remember three that I really enjoyed when I was in school. The first I remember we went to either Rainbow or Butter Crust bakery, can't remember which it was, we got to watch them make up and bake bread and got some hot buttered bread fresh out of the oven plus they give us pencils and book covers. That was in elementary school but not sure what grade. In 6th grade we left out on big buses before 6am and went to San Antonio, Texas. We went to the alamo, the zoo, the park for lunch and we also went to a candy making place. Ok, you would think kids in a candy making place would be the best thing ever but let me tell you it sure did stink. They give us some candy while in there and some when we left but after being in there with that smell most of us didn't even eat it. In the 8th grade we went to Austin, Texas, the capitol of Texas. We went to and saw some very interesting things. We stayed there for 2 or 3 days, not sure right now.
My grandson is going to be going on an end of school field trip soon. They are going to go to the zoo in a town just over an hour away. I would not feel like taking kids swimming is a good idea.

I loved all the field trips I went on while in school,I loved going to museums and the zoo, the sea life aquariums a couple years in a row we went to the Circus too.I found it all so exciting and loved having new adventures,I still enjoy those things. With all the things they do today if I had a child I would let he/she go as long as I was a chaperone but that's just me.

I went on field trips when I was young, I really enjoyed them because coming from the innner city ghetto there were so many things that I had never experienced for myself, and field trips made them so real to me, but better than reading something in a book.

i remember going to an old fort when i was in school and i went to a farm with my younger daughter's kindergarden class and went to an old house on a battle field and went with my older daughter when she was in grade 7 to a ww2 battle ship (yes, i am a history fanatic!)
this year, my older daughter (now in grade 9) went to a shakespeare festival - man i wished i could have gone!

I don't know much about the schools anymore since I home school my children. However, I do know that the schools here barely take field trips anymore due to money for the drivers. I think that is sad as it is a lost learning opportunity for so many kids. I feel that the kids that learn visually are losing more opportunities every year.
I remember going to museums and the zoo. I try to take my girls places that they will learn but that I think they will enjoy. We go to museums quite often and we like to go to parks where they can learn about stuff.

I remember one, but I don't if it was a school or campfire outing, but it was at this candy store around Easter and we saw how they made their chocolate covered eggs..We were allowed to take a little one home, I picker peanut butter and that year I told my Mom I didn't want a chocolate rabbit, but a large chocolate covered peanut butter egg..
I know when my daughter was in preschool, they went to the local grocery store and were allowed to go in the back and see all they do back there..
I guess unless there is something in the area, they don't do trips like this..My 6 y/o, his field trip this year was at a pumpkin patch, but since we go there ourselves and they didn't do anything special other than painting a pumpkin, (which became a delicious pie), there was no behind the scenes on how they operate.
I didn't go because we had no car, but hoping to have one next year..:)

We use to go on some, but I wouldn't say many. I think my kids have better field trips than I do. They go to fun places and they go to museums and places like that. They love it when they go. There are always plenty of chaperones with them when they go.

My daughter goes on field trips each year. This is the first year that they are going to an amusement park- It's only the band and it's chaperoned with a lot of parents. I'm going as well :)
Our schools still do the fun ones as well as teh educational field trips. They have been to the Philharmonic, the Eastman Kodak theater, museums, Old country museum--- learning about the olden days- it was my favorite one to chaperon. I think it's great fun for the kids to be able to do these things.
Of course they always do a movie as well :) and this year they went snow tubing at a big Ski place :) exercise-
We took a lot of field trips when I was in school also- I love the memories!

I grew up in a small town, so we did do field trips because the class sizes weren't so big. The best one I remember was to a car factory. It was so fascinating to see how the cars were made.
I was visiting St. Augustine a couple of days ago, and ran into a group of school kids on a field trip. I was glad to see them. For those who may not know, St. Augustine, FL is the oldest continually settled city in the U.S. The oldest schoolhouse is one of the many historical items one can see there and the the kids were visiting that. They looked like they were enjoying themselves. I hope they remember their field trip.

Wow the old days of school field trips. I had two that where beyond awesome one was going to the exploratrium to look at the stars, and another was going to the Tombstone pizza plant. Those where some good times a day out of school yet we were learning the whole time, but know one could have told us that.

I was always actively involved in being a volunteer parent on field trips for my kids growing up. One year I suggested that the kids be allowed to go the Science Museum instead of some stupid amusement park. There was a lot of flack, but the school board agreed. Well those kids had more fun at the Science Museaum than they ever could have believed they would. And that year, the three of those kids won awards at the school science competition because of what they were inspired by at the Museum. I think it's disgraceful that todays field trips teach nothing more than how to eat the most junkfood!

I remember the field trips we went on and have never heard of my kids or theirs going on these kind now..I wonder if its because of the liability and cost??
We went to a Newspaper ( La Times) and learned how they made the paper each day..we all got a typeset with out name and a mini type set with the constitution on it..so small you needed a magnifying glass..we went to olivera Street in Los Angeles, Knotts berry farm ( when it was free)and museums and China town!

i only allow my kids to go on school field trips if its educational, but if it's not, i don't allow them to go. besides, i bring my kids to zoos, museums and other places which will be fun and educational for them and at the same time enjoy our time together.

I agree with you on field trips for learning. Like the ones I went to like The Old Fort. That was like a history lesson and very interesting place to go see here in Florida. It was really interesting to see and also learn. I am not sure if I had any kids that I would want them to go espically to a theme park here . We have Walt Disney World. I am not sure if field trips are being taken as much as they were when I went to school.

I went on field trips with school--I remember going to the Met Art Museum in NYC in Middle School and our bus breaking down! We had to wait for the other bus to come back to get us! It was hot and smelly on that bus (it had a/c and a bathroom, but the driver wouldn't run the a/c for us!), so we were allowed to get off in pairs and go to the corner (waaaayyyy down the street!) to get drinks. Of course, this was in 1984 and we were watching street break dancing, something really cool when you're in 7th grade and the town shuts down at 9 PM! I also went to a poetry festival my senior year--really cool!
I also recall trips we took with our Girl Scout troop (yeah, yeah, I know, a Geek!)...I recall our trip to NYC to visit the Empire State Building, going to Mama Leone's for dinner and to the Rockettes! I have two specific memories of that trip: once we left the rooftop of the Empire State Building, we got into groups to get on the elevator. Something happened to the other elevator and it got stuck! Unfortunately, one of the mothers on our trip is claustraphobic and nearly had a breakdown in the elevator!
The second memory nearly made my mom super embarassed. Mama Leone's was a very famous Italian restaurant back in the 80s, with authentic Italian cuisine. Southern Italian to be exact. My grandfather emigrated here from northern Italy just after WW I, and my grandmother's family was also from northern Italy. So, when I tasted their meatballs, I said (quite loudly!), "These aren't as good as yours mom!" in front of everyone! And I was 11 or 12 years old at the time! Needless to say, my mother turned 50 sheets of red, apologized to the chef who came to our table to meet us, and then told me on the way home while she appreciated how I felt, it wasn't necessary for me to announce it in front of the chef! Ooops!

You're right Twoey, children do not get to take the kind of field trips that we use to take. We were able to do so much more. In fact the graduating class this year did not even get a senior trip. I find it so sad, they miss out on so much because of government cut backs.

I was lucky . I grew up 8 miles away from Washington D.C.So when I was in school we went to the White House and the Washington Monument and other historic places. We didn't go to pools or amusement parks.

We pretty much went to the same place every year, which did get a bit boring. Now my son takes school trips and the last couple of years have been to the zoo. The only reason I feel safe about letting him go is because there would be two teachers and a lot of the parents volunteer to go with them, so there are plenty of people to keep an eye on them. I would love to go but I have other kids at home and cant stay away all day. I would much prefer him to go to museums and other exciting places because that is what he likes doing. :-)

I remember being on a field trip as a kid to a flower
growing ranch where we gotto see huge fields of blooming
flowerslike stock and sweet peas, and a field trip to
a farm where we saw cows being milked and watched
butter being made. those things really stuck in
my mind.
