Next month in June I’ll be turning 40
. It got me to remembering when I was 17-18 and thinking how 40 was ancient. I couldn’t imagine I’d ever live that long and swore I was going to end my life at 35 b/c I didn’t want to get old and decrepit. Now here I am eyeball to eyeball with 40 and thinking I’ve still got another 25-30 years in me…maybe more
. Talk about perceptions changing. I still tend to look at 80’s and 90’s as ancient but 40 is now perfectly acceptable. Besides I don’t feel old although I got my first twinge of Arthritis this week…in one finger
. My only hope is that I don’t get a tombstone cake for my birthday next month LOL
BTW, the picture is from the net and is Ms. Edna Parker who is 115 years young...way to go, Ms. Parker!!
When you were young, what did you consider old? Do you still think of it as old? Are you ok with your age now or do you try to hide it b/c it bothers you? Are you starting to get signs of getting older?

I was ok with my age until my husband left me for a 23 year old! Sure, I was a few years older than him, but he swore that it didn't matter and that he never even thought about me being older. But I guess that wore off because when I turned 40, 23 apparently looked better to him. Oh well...his loss. Age is definitely all in the mind, because I sure don't feel 43! And as a bonus, my daughter thinks I'm only 31! lol

Happy Birthday for next month Twoey!! I remember when I was about 7 or 8 I used to think that my parents were ancient, and at that time they were only in their late 20's!!! I will be 32 at the end of this month, which I never thought I would see. I dont think any of us can see ourselves getting old. My hubby will be 45 next month and I always joke with him that old age is creeping up on me when he walks up behind me lol.... There are times when I realise how old my eldest son is (he will be 9 in August), that I think that the years are flying by. It seems like it was only yesterday that I had him. :-)

It is funny you are talking about this, I was just saying today to my sister, that I do not feel old, I am 48 soon to be 49. But when I look in the mirror I sometimes wonder who is that looking back. I just hate how everything seems to want to go south as we age.
Plus all the others things like grey hair, stiff joints. I really hate to even be bothered by them, but I am. What I like is the knowledge I have now. I am so much smarter and more content now then when I was young. I do not worry about little things any more. I know how to nurture and treasure the relationships I have now as well. I know it is just the natural course of things to age, but when my mind is feeling young and then the mirror and body tells me otherwise, I get a bit bugged.

I will be turning 50 in a few short weeks. I'm still as young as I ever was in spirit, just the package I'm walking around in is sagging and wrinkling.
The ages I use to think were old don't seem old to me at all. I don't know what I thought 30, 40, or 50 was going to feel like, but I don't feel old.
I wish I looked better. If I could, I would have a facelift, not to look younger, but to look rested. I always look tired and haggard, but again, that's the package isn't it lol.
I hope I live to be real old. But I wouldn't trade places with the youth of today. Their lives seem so shallow and fast.
I didn't mean that disrespectfully. But all this partying, tattooing, and one relationship after the other boggles my mind.

Hun, I so know where you're coming from. I turned 40 last year and boy, did I make a right old song and dance for it. I invited loads of friends for a night out to celebrate (except I asked them to come and commiserate) me turning 39.99 and clearly told everyone I didn't want to see cards with 40 on them. About 70 friends and family members turned up and many of them did as I asked and bought cards with no numbers on, I got 3 or 4 cards which said "happy 21st" a few that had jokey comments about being "over the hill", one which said "happy 50th" and my colleagues were really sweet and got me 4 cards saying "happy 10th" and gave them to me at different intervals during the day and decorated my desk with kiddy birthday tablecloth and a huge birthday banner (not saying 40) and the whole office was filled with balloons and on top of that we had jelly and ice cream in the afternoon like 10 year olds! My boss instigated it and it was a lovely day throughout which I felt very pampered! I got a new hairdo before going out with all my friends on the Friday and my husband paid me the loveliest compliment when I got back from the hairdressers and said "where is my wife? Who is this 24 year old before me?"
Now like you when I was a teenager, I thought anyone over 25 was ancient, when I was 20, I thought people over 30 were old, when I hit 30, I thought 40 was mature but not an age I wanted to be. When I got to 39 I decided I would start counting down from my next birthday. So although I only turned 39.99 last year, I will be turning 38 this year and will be dropping that annoying .99 from the end of my age hehe!
Seriously though, 40 is not at all as daunting as I thought it would be. I went out partying with a friend who turned 50 recently and there were a couple of others who were in their mid 50s and the rest of us ranged from mid 20s to 40s and we had the best fun I've had in ages. At this age you don't have the hangups and insecurities you had in your teens or 20s. In your early 30s you're still finding yourself as a woman. In your 40s you really are "grown up" and you realise that people will have to like you for what and who you are or they can lump it! I have far more disposable income than years ago and can holiday in far off exotic places if I want to. I don't have to worry about being in debt at the end of each month although I still have an active social life at the weekends and I can manage to save about £500 each month without going short anywhere else.
You should be saying "Bring it on!" and celebrate in style, show everyone how it's done. 40 is the new 20 or 30 (dunno which) but I'm enjoying life far more than I did 10 or 15 years ago! Happy 40th birthday in advance of next month hun. It's a big one, so make sure you celebrate in style! xx

I was always fond of the senior citizens when I was a kid cause they were always so full of stories that I loved listening to so, no, I never thought of them as being old..just awesome story-tellers.
shhhhhhhh.....don't tell anyone but I'm going to turn 39 this Friday. I'm content with my age even thou I've had some minor and one major problem over the years. I'm still very young at heart, thou, which is what counts to me.

I will never be ashamed of my age, because I was never taught to. Everyone in my family has been proud of their age, and will tell it to anyone that asks. We look young, so people are always surprised to hear our ages. A lot of people think that my mom and I are sisters, until we tell them otherwise (She's 42). My grandmother, even with her salt and pepper hair, looks younger than her manager at work, which is 31, (My grandmother is 59).
Age is supposed to bring wisdom, which I hope to have acquired my share at almost 27 (June 7th). So I will be proud to tell my age, and pray to have the wisdom to more than back it up!

to me age is just a number you are as old as you feel i am 29 years old but some days i feel older it depends on how much sleep ive had and how hard ive worked too determine whether im old of not but i feel this that you should live life to the fullest and be happy at any age that you are!!!!

Well I will be 52 next month and while my body feels old at times my mind does not. If anything I feel younger now than I did when I was in my 20's. I think that no matter how old and worn out my body might get my mind, my thoughts will always be young.

Snap, my birthday is in June, I was the same when I was younger thinking that anyone in there 30s was old, of course it is not really that old is it, not when you think about it and certainly not when you get there. When you are in your 30s, it becomes the new 20s!!
I remember my eldest boy being little, I would work out how old I would be when he reached certain ages, remember working out how old he would be in the year 2000. Now he is nearly 17, it is strange.
I am not really happy with the aging thing, I am not going gracefully with it at all, but I have to just put up with it.

Quick insight as to exactly how nuts a person can be. When I turned 22, I lost it. I thought life was officially over for me. You see I lived my life just waiting to be 21... I had a very good 21st year and couldn't imagine that being older could be any good at all. I hadn't yet had kids or settled down, and suddenly I was old. OK. now that was more than a decade ago and I have gotten over my psychosis. Now I am comfortable with who I am and the condition I'm in. My hair is salt and pepper. I don't dye it. If God didn't want me to have stripes of grey He wouldn't have put them there. I'm thin, but because of having three kids my stomache is kinda saggy. Welp. I don't wear belly shirts anymore, and thats a small price to pay for the kids I love. My bones ache in the winter, more reason to suggle up under the covers with my mate. My eyesight is lacking, great reason to buy groovy glasses, or colored contacts! I love my body much more now than I ever did before. I appreciate what is capable of, and what it isn't. I'm glad I'm not the snotty 21 year old girl I was, and instead a very happy woman.
Happy early birthday twoey!!! I hope you have many more!

Twoey actually you are going to love being forty, well that is untill the big "M" hits in the later part of 40, but thats a whole different discussion. I remember my early teen years and like you 40 felt so very far away. Not that I wanted to die or anything. My fear was that Jesus was going to come back and take us all away before I had a chance to get married and have children. Religion was ingrained and I was a bit brainwashed by it all.
I do grieve my lost youth. There comes a time in every womans life when we look in the mirror and wonder what happend to the girl we were. Where did she go. But femininity does not leave us, no actually the opposite is true, we find its real meaning. So relax and enjoy, your life has just begun.

I remember when I was a teenager, I thought 25 was old..
Then when I hit 40, I thought, wow, I am getting up there, but I don't feel it..(I only feel old after a hard days work in my garden..
)
I am going to be 46 this Nov and now I wonder, I will soon be hitting the half century mark, and I don't feel nearly as bad as I thought I would..

Age doesn't matter any more these days. I have met some women and men that are in their 70's and you would never know it. Today there is so much a person can do to stay young. There is plastic surgery, which I don;t think I would ever do, and there is cosmetics that help slow down the aging process. I would like to get my eyes lasered but that is about it. I am 51 years old and I am proud to be my age, so much so that I don't try to hide my age. I do try to look my best with what I have and I do use anti-aging creams on my face but that is it. I don't think of age anymore as in, I'm geting old, because the only other options is to die. We all get old if we make it that long, so what is the big deal with the number of years we have lived. We can only look forward to living a whole bunch more, if we are lucky enough to.
I have a girlfriend that is 45 years old and her boyfriend is 79 years old but you wouldn't think he was a day older than her, if you were to see them. Now then, he has loads of money and has had a few surgeries to keep his face from being all wrinkled, so that helps. But even in his nature he is still young. They do more things together than most people I know that are younger than him.

Hi twoey to me you are as old as you feel and being 52 I still feel like a yougster and tend to act like one at times!! I still don't class myself 'old' and until I really think like that will never be
so keep living day to day coping with that think positively and you'll never be 'old'-anyway you are a 'baby'

When i was in my early teens i dreaded turning twenty, i use to call my older cousins old and they were in their early twenties. Now that i'm the big 4.0 i dont know why i use to say forty is old. Forty is good, so my new old age is {60}.I think i'm doing good for a forty year old, i have yet to experience any problems that come with being older{except a few grey hairs}.
