Gas prices in your area...and what do you do about it?

I live in WV and paid $3.98 for 87 octane today! Since I drive a Buick Rendevoux that only gets 18 miles a gallon, gas is almost more expensive than our groceries now! What do you pay and drive and are you doing anything about it?

My husband just told me that gas prices went up by 10 cents today. That means we are up to $3.85 for regular. He drives an older model Honda Civic, which gets great gas mileage. He drives it to work and we use it, when we don't have to take all the kids. But with three kids in car seats we need a minivan for family outings, which is my regular vehicle. That would be a Honda Odyssey. Fortunately, I'm a stay-at-home mom, lol. I try to combine as many errants as I can. Luckily, we'll get a one year break from pre-school. My middle one starts Kindergarten in the fall and the youngest is not old enough yet. We'll save on that commute for at least a year. My older one, and now the middle one in the fall, take the school bus. Still there are their sports activities and church. It's just combine, combine, combine trips. Don't run the AC so much or the DVD player in the car. Don't carry around junk in the trunk. Keep the tires properly inflated. You know, stuff like that....

Those are some good suggestions. I also have heard that you should have your fuel filter changed yearly. That helps to increase your gas mileage. Thanks for your response, here is a plus for you!

We live in a very isolated area so if we have to do something it usually involves a bit of driving. For instance, today I have to go grocery shopping which is a 60 mile round trip. I try to make each outing worth it. I have not driven in a week and the last price I saw at the pumps when I did get out was 3.49 or 3.54 I forget. I drive a Town and Country Mini Van and its gas mileage is only slightly better than yours geting 19-20 mpg. I have a huge trip ahead of me of nearly 2000 miles and it makes me awful sick to think about the gas prices. As it is I will be causing my beloved 1 hour of hard labor for each hour I drive... hoping prices do not go any higher while we are gone... hope we can afford to drive back home! I recently purchased a locking gas cap. It is a little too big and the hinged door to my fuel area does not close all the way - but I felt it a necessary device.

well gas did go up since the last time I was in town - 3.59 now. I made the most of my grocery shopping and filled two carts - now the fun part, putting it all away. I got the perishables up anyhow. They had some really good buys, makes me miss my large honkin Gibson deep freeze. One good deal was Hebrew National 97% fat free all beef frankfurters at 89 cents a pack - when I buy them at the commissary they run $2.25 since my boy can not eat the fats this allows him to enjoy a hotdog now and again. I picked up 10 packs!

That was a good buy! Looks like you might have paid for your journey with that savings alone! Have a great night!

I live in WIsconsin and our gas prices are up to $3.97 so they are close to your prices. I drive a Sunfire GT and I only get about 24 miles per gallon. I hope prices go down sometime soon! :) I doubt they will but I can hope

We live in OK and gas is $3.65 here. My pickup gets 15-16 per gallon. It's been parked and I've been driving our Saturn instead. It's a 1993 SC1 with 183,000 miles on it but drives like a top and gets 30+ miles per gallon. It was our daughters car but when she got a newer vehicle last fall the small dealer she bought from didn't want the Saturn for a trade-in. She gave the car to us. Mostly it's been sitting since then. It needed a little work done to it. My hubby got it fixed and now I'm reluctantly driving it. I have a 45 minute commute to work. I miss driving my truck, but it's alot cheaper to fill this car up at $25 vs $65+ to fill up my truck.

I live on a small island, off the coast of British Columbia, our gas is $6.77 a gallon! I drive a Ford F150, and have to..my businesses are Landscaping, Tiling, so always carrying around large pieces of equipment, smaller truck would not accomodate things like a Ride'em lawn mower, 2 other mowers, etc....Or a large Tile Saw & Equipment...SOOOOO, am forced to "bite the bullet" and pay the price! Truck has two gas tanks...filled one on Saturday and it was $97.00. On June 1st, we face another local increase of 2.5 cents a litre, Carbon Tax...so it is predicted by August, with other increases we will be paying $10.00 a gallon. Ouch! Cheers!

It is $3.75 per gallon of regular unleaded here in Indiana. I work from home so I do not have to pay these high gas prices, thank God. My husband works right across the street from our home now also, but he does drive to work, but it never costs us much for gas because he does not have to drive very far. We do not go to many places other than to the grocery store though because we just cannot afford it.

I just paid $3.80 for 87 today. Normally I drive a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais...it's a cute little 2 door, 4 cylinder, 5 speed. I think my gas tank only holds 12 gallons and I can go about 300 miles or more on one tank so it's not too bad. I'm a SAHM mom so there's not much I can do to cut back. I already only drive when I have to. S/o has a big beast of a truck...ugh...a 1990 Chevy Suburban...V-8, 350 engine, plus it's heavy. He goes through $400 in gas a month just for his normal driving like to work and back. It's so frustrating. We would trade to save some money and have him drive the little car but I need the room for three car seats and not all his seat belts work . That's the only reason we bought it too...to have a 6 passenger vehicle with the option of 3 more if we found a third row seat for it.

I'm not too far from you so I'm sure ours will be going up again. I am in Pittsburgh PA and currently on May 14th at 9:12am the gas is $3.75 a gallon I seen it for $3.79 at one place but they are always the highest. I say it like that because I know it can change at the blink of an eye. I have a Chevy Colbolt and get about 23 miles to the gallon, but my husband he has a Ford Explorer and only gets about 13 miles to the gallon. He doesn't drive far, at most 8 miles a day. He only drives to drop our daughter at grams and to work then home. Any more and he takes my car. For me I drive about 10 miles a day. We don't drive any more then we have to. We try to get everything done at once. Like we go to 1 shopping center that has all the stores we have to go to then just walk from store to store. I am really ready to get a bike. - Hey I'll get in shape that way lol.

Gas prices in my hometown in Canada are aproximately $1.30 CAD a litre, give or take a ew cents. It's insane!!! I'm glad that I have a CNIB card (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) card, which allows me to ride the local busses or free. I will never be able to drive, and I know that will save me a heck of a lot of money in the long run.

Gas where I live in TX is back DOWN to 3.89 or a bit more in some places - early this week it was 4.05 to 4.07 a gallon. We are driving a lot less and trying to not have to buy gas very often now, it is just way too expensive!
