Has anyone else tried carb/high protein diets?

Seven years ago I went on a modified Atkins Diet, low in carbohydrates and high in protein. I lost just over 25 pounds in a couple of months...I don't recall exactly how many...and the weight has stayed off for all these years. I believe the reason for that is beause this diet changes your eating habits, reducing your dependency on processed foods and sugary drinks and snacks. My favorite part of the diet was that I was required to "carb up" every five or six days so I never felt that I was denying myself any of my favorites...I was just delaying having them.

I am supposed to follow a low carb diet for life because I am diabetic. Unfortunately, I'm not supposed to "carb up" at all. It is hard to stick to my diet all the time. I haven't been too successful lately, but I am trying. When I stuck to it perfectly right after my diagnosis, I lost was able to lose 20 pounds. I just have to get back into it correctly.

I'm sorry to hear that you have diabetes. I have a 17 year old step-granddaughter who was diagnosed about four years ago with Type I diabetes and I worry about how her disease is progressing. She has arthritis now and her sugar is all over the place more than it's stable no matter how hard her mother and the doctor try. No diet is fun and you have to be able to treat yourself once in awhile. There are low/no carb treats and snacks...I even found low carb pasta recently and pasta was one of the things I really missed when I was low carbing.

I'm sorry to hear about your step-granddaughter. Type 1 diabetes is harder to control than type 2. I wish her all the best. I have tried some of the low carb/low sugar snacks. Alot of them aren't much lower in carbs than regular snacks though. I have experimented and know what I can eat that won't raise my blood sugar. The trick is only eating those things..lol. I tried dreamfields pasta and it didn't make my blood sugar go up. Unfortunately, they quit selling it in stores here.

I know from Katie's experience how hard it is to maintain good blood sugar so I wish you the best controlling yours. It definitelly can be a challange.

Wow, congratulations to you. That's great, not only that you were able to lose the extra pounds, but especially that you were able to keep it off. This is one of the largest complaints by dieters.

I agree. I had tried traditional low far diets in the past but I would always cheat and the weight would slowly return after I reached my goal because of what I was eating. I still eat sugary sweets from time to time but learning to eat differently made me crave different kinds of snacks, which definitely has helped to keep the weight off.

I do not have a gallbladder and people without gallbladders are not supposed to do diets like Atkins. At least that is what I was told. Congratulations on maintaining your weight loss all these years.

Thank you Lilybug. I haven't heard anything about people without gall bladders not low carbing but it makes sense and I would recommend that anyone with *any* health problems consult with their doctor before going on any diet.
