How many pets do you have? |
|
For years we only had a dog. Then about a month ago we went to a small animal fair and since we had been talking about getting guinea pigs we bought 2 guinea pigs and brought them home. My older sons friend bought hamsters and was unable to keep them so we are "hamster sitting" but the female was pregnant when we got her so we would up with 9 hamsters. We are down to 7 now and getting rid of them fast. My foster child has 2 gerbils and my other son bought a red tailed boa (snake). Now I feel like we have our own small animal fair LOL How many pets do you have?

1. mclendon (241) | 3 months ago | Two dogs, 2 rats, 1 hermit crab, 2 chickens, 1 kitten and a tank of fish. I recommend to people that they always adopt pets from a shelter or put the word out and people who have unwanted animals will let you know. You can also check the bulletin board at your local Veterinarian's. There are so many unwanted pets out there that most pet shops should only be selling pet supplies. Of our pets, one dog was a stray, the other I inherited when a relative died, the rats are descendants of previous rats (and are both male so there won't be more), we bought the hermit crab, the chickens were given to us, and the kitten came from the animal shelter. I hope you can keep the snake away from the rodents!:)

Countrymom (315) | 3 months ago | :) The rodents are in a bedroom and the snake is currently in the living room destined for an upstairs room (the rodents are downstairs). LOL Thanks for sharing! I used to live on a small farm and really miss the horses the most! We are living in town now.

Countrymom (315) | 3 months ago | Our dog is an outside dog. When he was born (we had momma dog at the time) he looked like Scooby on the cartoons. Now he looks like Ralph the sheep dog in the cartoons LOL We are unable to have a cat due to my husband and son with severe cat allergies that require hospitalization.

Countrymom (315) | 3 months ago | I love a lazy fat cat lying outside on the porch but sadly we cannot have any due to husband and son with allergies. I worked in a vet clinic for a time and really enjoy all animals.

5. koalatbs (120) | 3 months ago | Hi Countrymom - OMG... guinea pigs, hamsters and a dog?! Oh, I almost forgot the gerbil and the SNAKE! yikes! I do not know if I would ever allow my son to have a snake in our house. I don't think I would. Especially since we have a cat and a dog. I would be afraid that the snake would not only get out but could hurt our other pets if it did get out. Especially a big snake. Boas are big, aren't they? How big is the one your son has? We used to have a 30 gallon fish tank but not since we moved to California. We will probably get another one after we move again this summer as it should be a fairly permanent move. Ya never know! LoL

Countrymom (315) | 3 months ago | I suspect a fish tank is on the kids list next LOL As for the boa, well,*sigh* she should get to be about 8 to 14 feet depending on how her particular lineage is. I am very very particular on snakes and they have to be real loves when it comes to interaction with humans. I have been around boas quite a bit and some can be a bit temperamental. So far this one isn't. I am hoping she will remain very docile. My son is in charge of her and I just over see it. After awhile though snakes are rather like watching the paint dry. They just don't do a lot except at feeding time LOL Needless to say, I have required a locking cage for the hamsters and gerbils protection.

mclendon (241) | 3 months ago | Yeah, like Countrymom says, big snakes are actually pretty boring. They basically just lie there in a pile. They only need to eat every couple of months or so - right? There was a 200 pound classroom pet boa in the science lab when I was in school. It ate a thawed, frozen chicken once every few months and I hardly ever saw it move. Once we put an old ornery gerbil in it's cage (I know, awful) to see if it would eat it. The gerbil ran all over the snake and even sat on its head for awhile. The snake had its eyes open, but it never moved. We finally took the poor gerbil out.

koalatbs (120) | 3 months ago | Wow... lucky for that poor little gerbil! I guess that probably the movies have made me a little weary of snakes in general. I know that they are most likely given a bad rap and made to seem scarier than they actual are in real life. But, I don't know... they just kind of freak me out! They are so slithery and unpredictable. You just never know what they are going to do... just lie there (like you said) or strike their prey in a nano-second!

Countrymom (315) | 3 months ago | That was definitely one lucky gerbil! LOL I wonder if he ever realized how close he could've come to ending his life! LOL It seems that our boa (my son named her Furi prounounced fearie) has grown to almost double in length but not much bigger around. Again its like watching the paint dry LOL

9. chivolaski (418) | 3 months ago | when i was younger we used to own a small farm in the province... consisting of more or less 50 pigs lots of chickens and a fish pen it's a small house that floats on water with probably thousands of tiny fishes in two of the nets on its side we'd go to the province once a month to check how business is but we found out that our traitorous business partner has been cheating on us... now we just have 4 dogs and a rabbit at home..

koalatbs (120) | 3 months ago | Hi chivolaski - Sorry to hear about your traitorous business partner. That is a real shame. I don't know how some people can live with themselves. I think a lot of it has to do with how they are raised, but I also know that sometimes no matter how well some kids are raised, some just turn out to be unmoral adults for some reason or another. Anyway, I have heard that pigs are pretty intelligent animals. I have never really been around pigs much, except at petting zoos when growing up. Are they pretty smart animals? I'm sure some are even smarter than the average human! LoL... just kidding. Hope you have a wonderful day & a nice week too. Take care.

koalatbs (120) | 3 months ago | You are so right smartbrain69. With the rising prices of so many things lately, it is hard enough to afford the basic necessities of life let alone paying extra to raise pets too. It can really be hard on the pocketbook.
