Did you find that while pregnant or for the year or so after that you had a shorter attention span and couldn't get into books as you used to? I used to be a voracious reader, devouring several books at a time on my days off. Since my initial pregnancy, even when I find the time, I don't have the concentration or interest, can't get into any books!

1. magnet (1415) | 3 months ago | Since having children it's harder for me to get into books because they keep on disturbing me when I read. By the time I get to page 3 Mommy can I have this, Mommy she took my toy, Mommy this Mommy that. Then at night when they go to sleep and I get down time my husband wants all my attention. So I can only get through one chapter a day.

artemis432 (1730) | 3 months ago | Well when he's awake its hard. I'm hoping when I go back to school that will be okay - I tend to study in small sections - seven index cards at a time. It kept me in A's before. I hope my brain hasn't turned to mush!

magnet (1415) | 2 months ago | When my husband was working on his Masters when my son was a baby, when he studied I took the children to the movies, park, playgroups or anywhere so that he can have a quite place to study. It worked out and he was able to keep a 4.0 grade point average.

2. Essie119 (339) | 3 months ago | While pregnant and just afterwards I find that it is easier to reread books. This doesn't require the concentration. I also can't read the same kind of books. For some reason I can't tolerate the murder mysteries and suspence novels that I usually favour and tend to go for romance novels. I have to read - it's like a compulsion so this is my compromise.

artemis432 (1730) | 3 months ago | It used to be a compulsion for me. Maybe I'll try some of the supernatural romance authors I've read rather then mystery and suspense or sci-fi and fantasy.

3. jillhill (5500) | 3 months ago | When I was pregnant with my first daughter I read Rosemary's baby...well...that took care of any more reading while I was pregnant with her! Otherwise nothing really interfers with my reading....except when I am writing a book.

artemis432 (1730) | 3 months ago | I envy you, I would love to be able to get into reading so deeply. Plus I have a great idea for a self help non fiction book about relaxation and profit. But know I don't have the concentration at the moment.

4. chrysz (986) | 3 months ago | One reason could be our change in priority why we cannot focus on what we are reading. I myself can no longer sit down and enjoy the book especially when my child is awake. I'd rather watch her play than read the book. For me, they are one great book already that we can read and learn from.

artemis432 (1730) | 3 months ago | Well I can't when he's awake - he gets into everything! But even when asleep!

5. LexaNightShadows (956) | 3 months ago | Here is what I was told happens - as the baby is developing, it needs to get brains from somewhere, so it sucks them out of the mommy, and she never gets them back again - that is why our attention spans are so much shorter after having a baby and why we can't remember things as well as we use to. At least that's the excuse I'm sticking too!! LOL!!! Lexa

artemis432 (1730) | 2 months ago | That is exactly why its been so frustrating for me, books are a source of everything for me as well. Recently, very recently, I've gotten my attention back and have been able to read a few books in the past week. I'm so relieved it wasn't permanent!

34momma (3794) | 2 months ago | i know what you mean. thank goodness it comes back, but not everything comes back. it seems like the more children i had the worse my memory got! but my ability to do the things i love to do is right there in my heart, and no matter what i am going to make sure it stays that way. glad you got your focus back

artemis432 (1730) | 4 weeks ago | Me too. It was frustrating there for awhile as reading is so important to me.
