Privacy on Twitter  | |  Did you know that you can protect your privacy on Twitter? Basically, you go to settings and then account and check the box that says "protect my updates". That way, only people you approve can see your updates. You can still follow other people, but they would have to be approved before they follow you or your updates. This is great for people who are only using Twitter to connect to friends and family.
I like to have my updates public because I want people to know when I post a new entry in my blog or websites.
I would hate it, though, if my current friends and family members wouldn't approve me.

I like to post updates on my blogs, etc, and announce it there. You can also respond to other members and follow other people. There's even TV and radio shows/programs that will give you updates, if you want.
If you are using it to keep in touch with your friends or family, then checking that little box would be a good thing as it keeps you out of the public timeline.

Since I do it with business networking in mind, I don't protect my updates - 'cause nobody would see them! Of course if I were using it for personal use only, just with friends and family, that would be another thing altogether, but I find it perfect for business networking.
