This is the Lilac bush I planted 2 years ago. This is the first flower on the bush this year. I think it’s very pretty and it is a deep purple. I was wondering if there’s a certain way to prune the bush to produce more flowers in the following years? Is there anything at all that can be done to produce more flowers next year at all? Thanks all.

After the flower has dried up I trim it off and I don't know if this is the correct way, but my bushes have produced more from doing this..In fact I just trimmed mine yesterday..

Our lilac boosh was here when we bought the house, they say you are suppossed to trim them down but we have never touched ours. When we first moved here the bush was maybe 4 feet tall, and 3 feet wide. Now it about 10 feet high and about 10 feet wide. It blooms fully every year and is absalutely beautiful.

I don't see a picture again. Is it acting up for you?

I don't know about pruning lilacs myself, so I did a search to see what I could come up with for ya (and got paid to do it!)

Here's part of what one article said:

There are right and wrong ways to prune a lilac bush. There is also a right and a wrong time. Most importantly, prune or trim back your bush immediately after they are done blooming. Make sure to remove the spent bloom with your clippers. This will keep the plant from growing seeds and encourage creation of next year's buds. Next year's flower bud develops early, even though you may not see it. I have seen inexperienced gardeners trim the tops several inches back. While it looked a whole lot nicer, they loped off the next year's flowers with one pass of the hedge trimmer. By the way, we do not recommend using hedge trimmers. It gives a too trimmed appearance. Lilacs are not hedges.

You can read the entire article at http://www.gardenersnet.com/lilac/lilac02.htm

It looked like a pretty informative site.

Well so far this is 2 of 7 photos added to new discussions that I know were attatched but did not show up. It worked in the bean one adding it in your rsponse so I'll add it here as well. Thanks. I use a clipper not hedge trimmers.

I would just prune the dead flowers off. And any plant or flower that is purple I love. Purple is my favorite color. I have purple flowers out front this year. Dark and light purple look so pretty.

Here are some of the light purple from my back fence.
But I like my deep purple better.

Does it get lots and lots of sun? That's all I know about it, and I only know that because our two of our dark purple lilac bushes both got shaded out. They're the hardest ones, that I know of, to get the shoots for transplanting too. But I did manage to transplant a rather tiny one this year to a new sunnier location!

My Lilac has done bloomed and they died off already. Not sure how you would go about pruning it for more flowers the following year. All I know is the bush sets it's buds for next years blooms the year b4. Meaning, this year it will set buds for next years blooms so if you prune wrong, you might end up pruning off the buds with little to no flowers next year. I know your supposed to prune the blooms off after they die, thou.
