My Little Greenhouse! |
| |
| While I was out buying my little cherry tomato plant, I saw where they had the soil pods in a tray that you drop the seeds in and then cover the top with the lid provided and it's considered a greenhouse. So it reminded me that I had a little veggie tray with lid that would provide the same benefit. So I used 3oz plastic cups and put some seed starting potting soil mix in each of them, and then I planted the seeds in them and watered them and then put the lid on it. I've got it sitting on my bird bath at the moment. I'm going to try to add a picture of it here. So have you ever had a little green house? Have you ever had a make shift green house like I've done? Have you had any success starting your seeds to grow into plants using this method? Please share! | | My Little Greenhouse | | | | |

| | That is great. I save all kinds of stuff for germinating seeds. It drives my girlfriend crazy that I save "trash". LOL One of the tricks is to not let it get too hot. This can kill the seedlings. | | | | | | |

| | you sound just like me I am always doing things like this. I had one of the progating trays many moons ago and yes they do work but I kept my on the windowsil. I always start my seed in a seed tray but now I have a heated progator tray. It is electric and the heat is very gently at the bottom of the tray, the seeds always come up very quickly. I have my cherry tomatoes planted in a trough outside in the garden now and they are covered in flowers so hoping for a good crop. Let us all know how you get on with your plants | | | | | | |

| | Good job, Terri! I've done much the same thing with a pie plate that had a plastic lid. I just put it over my tomato seeds that I had in eggshells and kept it moist while waiting for the sprouts. If I'm not mistaken, you're supposed to take the lid off after they have sprouted. That's what I did, and they did fine. I also keep checking my plants and add more dirt around the stalk so that they will grow thicker and stronger, and more roots up to the buried portion. | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for the little tips. It's been a very long time since I've planted anything, though I did grow up with a large garden every summer. I don't recall ever starting anything as seedlings. We just planted everything in the ground. | | | |

| | I have never tried to make my own greenhouse before but you have a very good idea. I like to start my plants from seeds also if I have the time to mess with it. I have used potting soil and dropped some into an egg carton and planted my individual seeds in there to grow some plants. that works wekk until the plants start to grow alot fo roots. I have also used a milk jug, cut in half to start some seeds in also. I pour potting soil in it also and grow some seeds. | | | | | | |

| | I've often used the commercial seed starter kits that are a black plastic bottom with about twenty pre-formed cups and clear plastic lid on top.The method always seems to work well.My only suggestion would be to be cautious once you get the seeds to sprout that you allow air into the makeshift greenhouse by proping open the cover a bit, otherwise you'll end up cooking the little seedlings. | | | | | | |

| | hello terri that is cool that you started you a little greenhouse like that using three ounce plastic cups, and that is awesome that they have a lid to them as well. i do not have much luck at growing different things. i can keep a common house vine alive is about it. i planted some tomato, watermelon and cantaulope seeds early on this spring and all of my plants that i had planted died. lol so i guess that i will just give up on trying to make something grow. i do not know if i tried to plant my seeds too early in the year without enough sunlight on them or what the deal was. some of them came up and was looking ok, and probably over half of the seeds that i did plant didn't come up at all. so good luck to ya at having success with your greenhouse. have a beautiful afternoon. | | | | | | |

| | I've actually started seeds off with those little seed pod trays with the lids before, and had a fair amount of success with them, which was kind of cool lol. I want to start buying seeds and planting them again, but I wouldn't have much success. We live on the North side of our building and so we don't really get any direct sunlight at all which is a shame. However, I'm definitely going to get some patio tubs and start planting a few shade loving things in them. I have not having any color on my patio lol. Good luck with your birdbath idea. That's just genius! | | | | | | |
