What are you useing for flea and tick protection this year?

I've never had good luck with the petstore brands, but I order my Frontline on line. $100 is about what I pay for a year when I order online for my 60lb dog, so your vet sounds like a rip-off, depending on what he was giving. I know Frontline just sent out a ton of coupons for buy six months, get six months free from your vet, but it was still cheaper for me to buy it online. It's the only thing that I've found that works, in my situation, to keep the fleas and ticks at bay.

Out of curiousity, what brand are you currently using? I'll have to check it out. :)

I have one 20kg dog and I use Frontline and Bob Martin. I don't know exactly how much it's costs for me but it's fairly inexpensive per year. I don't get it from our vet, that's probably why.

I used to use front line plus and it worked good.
but i wanted something for mosquito's as well So I got k9 advantix and it works good.

I bought it from 1800petmeds with a coupon.
I think i have one tub left... but I got some stuff from online for free that i'm gonna try out because i really don't have the money to buy k9 advantix or anything in less i HAVE too. so i'm hoping this stuff will work.. its called Bio Spot

I've always used frontline but money is limited for me this year as well. i've tried seargents I'm not impressed with the results. Hartz is supposed to have some kind of ultrablock is supoosed to be good. Imight ask at Petsmart to see what they recommend.

I use Advantage, similar to Frontline on my dog. You could make your dog a herbal cure by steeping any number of flea-repellant herbs, such as tansy, wormwood, feverfew, lavender, rosemary or sage in hot water and then decanting the resulting liquid. If your dog is long-haired, you could wash her in this and don't rinse it out or, if short-haired, put some in a spray bottle and squirt it on her coat. The advantage of using sweet-smelling herbs is you will have a sweet-smelling dog that is also protected from fleas. Pretty sure that tansy is also a mosquito repellant.

my cat is indoor so i wont be needing it, thank God. but when i had my late shihtzus and had to walk them a lot, they had flea problems, and i just washed them a lot and fogged the house a lot. i even tried garlic and water or avon product diluted with water. i am not into products with chemicals on my pets. so that is why i am not going to get a dog until i can find a natural product to control fleas and ticks. does anyone know of any?

I have 2 small inside dogs. Nothing I ever bought them seemed to work very well. They've just came out with a pill you get from your vet, it's called comfortis. You give it once a month and it really works. I wish they had this years ago. Ask your vet about it. It's worth the money.

I have used the topical treatments on my cats and my dogs. Some of my cats have issues with it though, primarily one that has allergies. Of my 6 cats, it left a funny spot on two of them, the hair was gone after applying it and the skin was red and irritated.
The dogs didn't have any problems with it. However, at one time I had a dog that no matter what you used, from the waiste down, she still had fleas. The vet actually chewed me out. I told him, go for it, get rid of the fleas. I brought her back in to get her stitches out after being spayed. She still had fleas from the waiste down. We had tried everything from dip, to sprays, to the topical treatments. It was weird. Only the one dog.
Another time, years ago, I bought dip that was supposed to be safe for dogs and cats from a local vet. I asked them, are you certain and they said yes. Well, one of my cats got wobbly and began to drool. I called the vet. Their question, does she have long hair? Yes, but now was a fine time to ask me that. Apparently long haired cats are more sensitive to chemicals. I had to bathe her and force sugar water down her throat.
Recently I bought a spray for my cats. Once again, I asked, are you sure about this product. Once again, I was told yes by the shop owner. It was an all natural product. Well, here we go again. One of my cats began frothing, different cat this time. I washed her down and gave her sugar water.
Since I can't use any of these things on Carly, I keep a flea comb around. Also, I mix essential oils in a sprayer and spray under and around the house to try to keep the fleas and other bugs down. It has helped. You do have to be careful with essential oils also. Not just on your pet, but getting them on yourself. You should wear gloves when mixing them and they must be diluted. They can burn your skin. Some essential oils are dangerous to your pets and you so make sure you seek someone knowledgable about them.
The point I am trying to make is animals can be sensitive to things too. They can be allergic. Because a product says it's safe doesn't mean it's safe for all pets.

We used Frontline Plus last year and one dog kept getting ticks, so this year we tried K-9 Advantix. We have one more dog this year and that one and his dad both have ticks galore. I might have to try the Sergents one and see if I have better results.

Wow! That is a good price for your treatment supplies. We use Advantix on both of our large dogs. It's $100 a year for each dog to buy the treatment. Our vet offers all kinds of discounted products and I love buying my stuff from them. It is applied once a month and we have had no problems with fleas or mosquitos. Every once and a while they still pick up ticks but those usually just crawl around in their fur.
