Have you tried eating Greek food? What is your favorite? |
|
We have two local Greek restaurants in town and tonight, we feel like having Greek food for dinner, so we went to Olympia. This particular restaurant has been in town for more than 30 years. We started with Greek medley appetizer of stuffed cabbage, stuffed olive leaves and stuffed pepper. The appetizer was filling enough. Then came my Broiled Single Lamb Chop with rice and potato while my husband and our friend each had Baked Lamb with rice and potato. The beer made the meal even more delicious!
How about you, do you eat Greek food? What is your favorite?

1. photographygirl73 (1982) | 2 years ago | It's actually funny you should ask this question. There is this Greek restaurant here where I live. My husband & I have never gone there though because neither of us has ever had Greek food & we were afraid we wouldn't like it. What exactly does Greek food taste like? Is it very spicy? Do Greek dishes have a lot of flavor. Other then the dishes you mentioned what other kinds of food to they serve?

yanna1027 (171) | 2 years ago | When I think of Greek food, lamb comes to mind but they serve other kinds too. They have fish, pork and beef but they might be cooked with Greek twist on them. Hope you'll try Greek cuisine someday. Thanks for the response.

anonymousb (136) | 8 months ago | Try Souvlaki! If you like pork...you can't go wrong. There are so many good Greek dishes to try. Most of the Greek foods are very flavorful. You'll find a lot of lemony, garlicy, and aromatic flavors. Greek food isn't typically spicy. Everything is juicy and delicious! Take a look at the recipe page at The Opa Room website...

There are plenty of Greek recipes to look at and they all have pictures and descriptions.
Have a great day!

2. SamQuinn (1042) | 2 years ago | I love Greek and Lebonese food. My favorites are cabbage rolls, rice and green beans, hummus, tabuli, and greek salad.

yanna1027 (171) | 2 years ago | Great to hear that you love Greek food. Is there any difference between the Lebanese and Greek cuisine? Btw, I had a Greek salad also with my meal and I thought the goat cheese really added to the taste. I think it was my first time eating a Greek salad. Thanks for sharing!

|
SamQuinn (1042) | 2 years ago | I'm sure there is, but I'm not entirely sure where Greek leaves on and Lebonese starts in. Gyros, I think, are Greek. There's a salad similar to Greek called Fattouch -- and I'm not sure which it is; but it is delicious! One of the cafes here in town sells a Gyro sandwich and a Fattouch salad; I don't know if they're mixing ethnicities or not. I do feel fairly comfortable saying if you like one of them, you'll most likely enjoy they other: they're pretty much the same.

3. vicneedscoffee (870) | 2 years ago | I'm not big on greek food. There is a greek restaurant we go to occasionally and I always order the ribs...lol. Some greek food is good, but I don't like feta which is in a lot of dishes so my options are more limited. I think my tastes are simple and boring.

yanna1027 (171) | 2 years ago | That's okay if you're not big on Greek food. I am not so crazy about it either compared to other international cuisine but it's good to have once in awhile. Thanks for sharing.

4. fluffnflowers (1368) | 2 years ago | I really wish there was a Greek or Lebanese restaurant around here!
I love the Mediterranean fare because it's so fresh and tangy and well balanced. I love the stuffed cabbage and stuffed grape leaves and I love lamb. There is a pretty good gyro place nearby, so we will occasionally stop by and grab those.
It sounds like you had a wonderful meal!

yanna1027 (171) | 2 years ago | It was a wonderful meal, thanks. You know what, now I'm confused if we had stuffed grape leaves or stuffed olive leaves. Whatever it was, it was yum. Enjoy!

yanna1027 (171) | 2 years ago | Yes, I forgot about Baklava! I tried that at one of my sis-in-law's parties and they are sweet and yummy! It was on the menu but we didn't order 'cause we're stuffed already. Thanks for mentioning GYRO. I actually googled it and looks delicious! Will try it someday. Have fun!

Kaeli72 (975) | 2 years ago | Oh, thank you for picking my response. Actually, I was looking through some cook books of mine and came across something with stuffed grape leaves. Perhaps when I'm adventurous, I'll try it...then again, I don't want to hear my children say "Yuck! Can we have pizza?"

6. spectrum42 (348) | 2 years ago | I like gyros, Greek salad and flaming cheese. I can't remember if there is a special name for the flaming cheese dish, but I've seen it made in several Greek restaurants. It's fun to watch.

yanna1027 (171) | 2 years ago | I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had a good experience with your GYRO's here in the US. I haven;t tried it yet but will someday. We're lucky 'cause we live near a city where there is a good mix of different nationalities. There will be a Folk Festival late this month and I may try the Greek Gyro they will have at the booth. Good luck with your search for the best GYRO in the US!

| 8. dcacash (6) | 2 years ago | The snack of choice with ouzo is Sardeles Pastes. These are the sardines that have been caught that morning, salted on the boat and served that night. To eat them the skin is removed and they are seasoned with oil, lemon or whatever your host prefers to season them with.

yanna1027 (171) | 2 years ago | I love sardines! My grandmother used to slow cook sardines drizzled with a little olive oil and wrapped in spinach leaves. She also mixed some eggplants within the pot and when it's done, it was great! Thanks for sharing your Sardeles Pastes!

9. angelwhispers30 (1907) | 2 years ago | I'm not a huge huge fan of Greek food, but both my partner and myself LOVE souvlaki. I love the Lamb Souvlaki while my partner is more a chicken or pork souvlaki person.
I always said I didn't like Greek food. I've been to the Greek Isles a couple of times and refused to try any of their dishes. For that reason, it's ironic that I now find myself eating Souvlaki. All thanks to my partner who made me go try Greek with him one night lol.
