Do we really have to hate the 'other' party?

No matter which political party we lean toward.. is it really necessary to hate the other party and the people representing it. Aren't we then just falling for the tactic which gets the most votes? I think the parties demonize each other, because it gets them votes, but is this good for the country(s)? Can't people look at things a bit differently without despising each other? This seems like a very non-enlightened trend to me..

I abhor everything the liberals stand for, as I think socialism is going to destroy our way of life one day. It has already done some serious damage to us and our education system, along with the morality of society and the way we view things, and it just keeps getting worse all of the time. What some call enlightenment, others call perversion.

This is exactly what our founding fathers were afraid of. For some reason most people don't even realize that we can and should have more than two parties. If divided we stand, divided we will fall.

If I may speak as a non-American here, it's always very interesting to see the way most Americans get very worked up and passionate over political parties. Perhaps its a cultural thing here but if you surf Mylot and politcs section you can always tell who are the Republicans and who are the Democrates. It's very funny because even if they talk about the same event, their perspectives are very different. In Europe (old), people are less passionate about their political parties. It's like people are usually conservative or liberal but you'll find conservatives willing to vote for a liberal politician if they think he or she is good and you'll find liberals being able to respect conservative politicians. Of course, here in Sinapore things are a little different. Our rulling party has been in power in everyone's living memory and the opposition politicians only get votes when people want to tell the rulling party that they're not that big and powerful as they think they are.

Do I hate Democrat just because they are Democrat, no. Do I despise what they stand for, yes. That might sound non-enlightened but it is just who I am. I find Socialist to be the enemy of eferyone that want to be free from the rule of an almight government. No quarter to the enemies of freedom and liberity. No matter if it is a Democrat or a Republican.

Hello Flowerchilde, I am a Republican, yet I do not 'hate' Democrats. Geesh, I was one myself - many years ago. All of my family members and many of my closest friends are still registered Democrats. I also don't 'hate' the Democratic party. It was once my party, and it was the party of my parents and grandparents. What I do abhor, detest, and yes, even hate, is the socialist take-over of the Dem party, and the underhanded way that Marxists have inserted themselves into the the Dem party. Why do I abhor socialists for taking over the Dem Party? Because they're too cowardly to run under the banner of any of the three established American socialist/communist parties. I have no tolerance for self-serving cowards!

...the extreme liberals, I have to agree are very misguided.. unfortunately they may just ruin us all! I'm not all that crazy about the extreme conservatives either, but I do think their particular brand of destruction would take a little longer. - Here's a funny thing.. my hubby does not like McCain at all.. but I just love Joseph Lieberman! I may not agree with either completely however..

Hi flowerchilde, Of course you are right, there is never any need to hate the other party. The idea should be for for each party to put forward their ideas, and let the people decide. Too much negativity is not good for anyone. Blessings.

I can't figure out how I missed this discussion when you started it but I was about to start one on the very same topic when I found it now. I really does seem like to some people hating the opposition just comes naturally and I think it's really ridiculous and absurd. It's not even limited to people from different parties; case in point, the primary battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. There was little difference in policy between the two yet some of their respective supporters seemed to be out for blood! Now, anyone who doesn't go along with all the attacks on Obama is subject to ridicule and insults here on myLot. I've had many friends who have been Republicans throughout my lifetime and we've gotten along just fine and I even have some conservative and Republican friends here at myLot with whom I get along great and can have reasonable and mature discussions but there are always a few who have to get personal and downright dirty and nasty. The ironic thing, in my opinion, is that these people love to say what good Christians they are and how patriotic they are yet they're going totally against anything I ever learned in church and they apparently despise over half the people who live in the country they love so much! How can you love a country but hate the majority of its people? Annie

I've always wondered the same thing. I'm a liberal, but I don't hate the Republicans. I just don't agree with them.

Party politics bends us to its evil. We must oppose the other party to get elected and stay current in the minds of America, and in doing so we often stomp all over each other, which is not forgotten when it comes time to actually govern. Each side will say something hateful to get attention, encouraging the other side to retaliate, and forgiveness is hard to find when people are in a position that demands a certain amount of argument in order to work. It is not a trend, however. It is ingrained into our political system. Fortunately the public face of politics is much uglier than true functioning politics. Behind closed doors deals get done because hate is more for show and reelection than for use in governing. It seems to be a small but vocal minority of each party that continually tries to undermine the other in public opinion. The weak-minded fools that get caught up in it are to be pitied.
