My neighbor the other day came to the door to talk to us and by the way the talk I consider them tightwads but their also senior citizens. Senior citizens seem to be more tightwads compared to others I have known in my life. She found a penny on our driveway. She walked up and gave me a penny. I took it. I don't know if it was a sign of good luck or if she was trying to save me money. I do remember the saying "A Penny Saved Is A Penny Earned". I heard it cost the government 1.4 cents to make a penny when its only worth 1 cent. I guess that drives up the federal deficit. With the high prices of today theres no need for the penny. Lincolns already on the 5 dollar bill anyway. Its not like were showing him disrespect abolishing the penny.

yes there is talk of doing this here in canada as well. i think this would not be that good for the individual, but great for stores because most, instead of charging $1.98 for stuff, they would round it up to the dollar...the buyer would loose out in the end.

It's just a psychological sales ploy...Would you rather buy something at 19.99,or at 20.00? You get one penny back...You think you've saved money, not having gone over that line from tens to 20's,til you look at your bank statement..

Reading the discussion headline,I was thinking it was something along the lines of "Has Someone ever mistaken you for Someone Begging?" (No,they haven't!)I DID hear a story about a Guy on the street drinking a cup of coffee, and had somebody passing drop coins in it! (Time for a new Outfit,I thought..)I think it's the principle of the thing..if You abolish your smallest unit of currency,You're on the way to ruling out coin transactions altogether..When the UK went Decimal in the late 60's,the "Old" penny was equivalent in value to the "New" 1/2 penny..and along the way, that coin has been dropped! Since the,We've resized the higher value coins to be smaller...only the 1p and 2p remain as they once were..the 5p is now the size of a US Dime, when before it was the size of a Quarter..the 10p is now the size of a quarter!
