You know those stimulus tax checks; the ones we all couldn't wait to get, so that we could run down to the local mall and spend. Why is it that we were all so happy about getting it and not asking why our Government was giving it to us(I think they through us a bone so that we won't notice what's coming)in the first place. I took my stimulus check and paid some bills, bought some groceries(they are getting so high now), but why did they give to us in the first place? If consumers'(us) spend money and it makes our Economy look good to have us do this, then what is going to happen when we can't spend? Where does that put our economy and where will it end when no one has anything to spend? Just curious

Exactly. First, where is this money coming from? Aren't we in debt? Haven't they spent all our money on war? And really, how is it going to help the economy if prices stay where they are? It's more of an incentive for businesses to keep these ridiculous numbers....

I believe the money came from the General Fund but I could be wrong about that. Like any large business, the U.S. government has budget lines that it can draw from in emergencies. Even though the country is deeply in debt, and has been for years, income is regularly generated through taxes and other means so that the government can continue to support many programs. I don't put the blame on businesses. Every business is being affected by the out of control oil prices and the fault lies with OPEC and the oil spectulators, both of which are drivin prices up for no reason. It does not cost more to put oil in those barrels yet the price for that same barrel goes up every couple of days and we're now paying the price now for being dependent on foreign oil.

Thank you both for responding. I was just wondering why on earth ol'Pres. Bush decided to hang back some of those tax dollars. I just think something funky is going. Thanks, again Karen

The hope with those checks was that people would spend the money and help many businesses stay in business and to not lay off employees, that's why the government sent them out. In a sense it has helped because, even if you're buying groceries, you're spending money and helping the stores but many people are using the money to pay down credit cards and loans so that isn't too helpful. Unfortunately, this time around, these checks are like putting a bandage on a very deep cut. Yes, they will help a little bit for a little while but, unless something is done to slow the increase in prices, our economy is going to continue to go downhill and people will still lose their jobs.
