Last Day of First Grade

Wednesday will be the last day of school for my grandson. He is so eager for the last day. He went to bed at 8:00. We read from his favorite book of stories and said his prayers. I thought he would fall fast asleep because he played outside for over an hour after dinner.
He may have nodded off for a few minutes, but has been up 4 times since we shut the lights out. He came to the computer room in search of a hug. Each time I walked him to his room, gave him a kiss and tucked him back into bed. I hope he gets some rest. He will need it. So will I.

That is so sweet of him coming over to you for all those hugs. He must be so excited for school to end. My grandkids are always excited for the last day of school to end. The last day of school here was over May the 23rd.

Wow, May 23rd is quite early. I don't know what he would do with himself if vacation started that early. Do they go back earlier?

Awwwww... my daughter had her last day of 1st grade last week. It goes by so fast, doesn't it? I went through all her folders and bookbag and saw all the stuff she did and the progress she's made, especially with her writing.
Now we've got the long summer ahead of us! I'm looking forward to the break, and getting out of the whole school routine.

Very cute for you! But probably he is either overly excited or concerned as he knows his life will change...no worries, he'll figure out it changes for the better when he has all summer to play!
My 8 yo GD - second grade enjoys school alot and is rather smart for her age - she is reading Earagon, a sixth grade level book and doing well other than some words she can't pronounce...and neither can I
But I took her her last day, last week actually and she wasn't concerned one way or the other. She likes school but she likes being home in the summer!
To me the dissapointing thing was when I picked her up after school, she and about 4 of her close friends had a cute little hug fest and I asked them "have you all swapped phone numbers so you guys can call each other during the summer?" They all looked at me like a calf looking at a new fence! Like they were thinking " Call you? what's that?". Maybe I should have said email or text message each other! But then my GD spoke up and said "we don't know our home phone numbers, only our parents cell numbers".
I wanted to cry for them and make them swap parents cell numbers, but figure, not my business. Just not right kids don't know their home phone number, bt at the same time, how many parents are home these days to where they can be contacted at home if the child needs help or to call home or check in with parents. So I guess I just have to move into the 21st century a little farther!

I never thought to give my grandson my cell number. Maybe it is something I should consider.

Definately give him the number where you can be reached most of the time or easiest. My daughter is out in the field all day so not near a phone, so in a way (lordy, I never thought I'd be saying THIS....) thank goodness for cell phones or there'd hardly be a way for the school to call for emergency or things like that! They could call the department and go through whoever and go through dispatch and if she is in the car at the time, if not.... geez... thanks goodness she has a cell phone! I am home 90% of hte time so I had her memorize my home phone, but mommy's cell is better on that end!
Thanks to for the BR! Did you give you son the number?

My kids are coming up to the last few weeks of their years, my 7 year old is coming up to his last few weeks of year 3. My 6 year old is coming up to his last few weeks of year 1.
They are both excited about it as they get new teachers in their next years as well which they like. Plus they get excited as it means they are getting older. They finish their current years on July 18th.

Wow, July? The kids would go into shock if they had to stay in school that long.

Yeah, they break up the end of July and go back to school on the 2nd September. When do they break up where you are then?

I remember being that excited at that age. Amazing how a kid has a problem sleeping when excited. It's even more amazing how endless those nights seem when you just can't sleep. They're hard enough for adults, but kids feel they last even longer.

You are so right DC. He looked wide awake even though I knew he was truly tired out.

Sounds like he's really excited. Do they do anything special on the last day?
Transition can be a hard thing for a young person. On the one hand, lots of hours to play and do things, plus hopefully wonderful weather. On the other hand, won't be seeing many of his friends. Has he spoken to you about the last day very much?

I hope that he enjoyed his last day of first grade. It sounds like he was either looking forward to it or nervous about it, mabey a little bit of each.

Aww, He sounds like a sweetheart and how nice it is to read before bed and say your prayers.
Seems he may be a bit anxious for his summer vacation . When I was a kid I could not sleep either awating the day at school to say good bye to friends and teachers.
Hope you both got some sleep too .
Happy Vacation
