Have you ever trained with weights?

I have been thinking of using weights again to help with my weight loss program. Have any of you ever used weights when trying to lose weight? I remember that they were a big help to my when I used them several years ago. I'm not talking about the huge ones, just the tiny hand-held ones. I guess I have as much vanity as the next person when it comes to body image and I didn't like what I saw a few days ago when I took a good look at my upper arms.Where are your problem areas that you would most like to improve?

I haven't trained with weights but did have physical therapy last year for my back and smaller weights were used. I could use help with the flab on my arms. You know, the flab that hangs around between the shoulder and elbow on the underside of the arm. It's just a matter of tightening up the muscles to some extent. Would take longer now as I am older and these sort of things just happen! I have a little bit of tummy flab but not enough to be concerned about. If I stand up straight, the flab is gone...lol

I agree with you on the arms, carolbee, and most women do experience some problems in that area as they grow older.

I've just started back on my hand weights this week. I'm not crazy about what I see on my upper arms either. Besides that, I'm using the weights to improve my posture and eliminate a little back pain from when I'm on the computer. So I'm using the weights for those muscles across the front of the chest too - darn I used to know the names of all these muscles. A little weight loss as a side benefit wouldn't hurt. I'm still using my 3 pounds weights and that's working well - how heavy are your weights?

I don't have any weights right now, whittby, since the set I owned previously was lost in my last move. I think this is why I stopped using them-just neglected to buy new ones.

How about using cans? I've done that in the past - a good way to start out anyway and they're handy sitting right there.

I have kept on using weights since after I took physical therapy twice. I have made myself do the exersises that they showed me. They have helped my arms firm up a bunch so far. Also the legs wights I boughts for leg lifts have helpsed my legs some. I haven't really lost much weight but I have firemed up which is nice.

I totally agree. My arms were both very flabby untill I started using weights. Now they are firmed up. Which is a lot better then what they were before.

I think that the firming up is very beneficial, Shaun. Flab is so unsightly.

I did train with weights some years back, but it was the heavier ones. I didn't train with anything over about 150 to 200 pounds though. I did train with lighter weights for some parts the body though. My problem area as with many middle aged people is my abdomen.

I've heard that if you trained with weights before, jer, that all of the muscle would turn to flab once you stopped. Have you found this to be true?

I am not sure if the muscle turns to flab (i don't think thats the case though) or it is the fact that muscle weighs more and when you quit using them, they burn much less calories. Add the fat on top of that and you definitely are somewhat larger.

I never trained with weights. I do only walking and some stretching exercises. My probelem area is my tummy. Now a days it is really needs some urgent attention from me. I think I have to concentrate more on this.

The tummy is a real problem area, padmameera, and many of us need to deal with it.

I have good biceps, poor triceps. I understand that this is a common problem for women, as they work mostly in front of their body. I have had some good results when I have used weights. I would like to tone my back as much as I would like to lose my belly. I saw some walking exercises on TV the other day that recommended using small hand held weights, 1-2 lbs. Good luck. Maybe we will do makeovers on ourselves in the next few months.
