My son had to have an EKG yesterday

I took my son to the doctor yesterday because of a swelling in his sinuses. I thought it might be a polyp, but it was not. Just swelling from allergies. While I was there the nurse was telling me that they are making every child that is on ADHD medicine have an EKG done because of some kids dropping dead on the baseball field. Now every child that is on the medication has to have one done to check to make sure that they do not have heart problems and children who are going to be put on it need one before they can get medication. Since he needs his medicine refilled next week we went ahead and had his done yesterday. Do you have a child on medication for ADHD? Has your child had to have a test yet? *please no harping about how my kid does not need to be on drugs for ADHD and how ADHD does not exist. Trust me he needs it. Other things just did not work.*

I can empathize with your frustration. Medical science sometimes learns about important side effects too late. It is easy to be surprised and somewhat angry. However, for many children with ADHD or similar disorders, these medicines are important and really necessary. Behavior problems can really set back a child in school, even ruining their self-esteem. I think only the people who personally have a child diagnosed with ADHD should speak up about if it is 'real' or not. Anyone else is too easily accused of being insensitive with the advantage of being blessed not to be asked to walk a mile in the other person's shoes.
