Anyone know employment termination laws in Missouri

I was fired on Thursday (in Missouri) with the reason stated, "I just can't work with you and I feel it's time to move on." I have been with this job for nearly two years and had been promoted from one position to a department head just after a year of employment. We got a new boss just over four months ago and she has stated many times that someone on that position should have a degree (which I do not). I was doing my job and it has been publicly noted but I was still terminated. I am checking with an attorney but thought someone here may have some insight.
Thanks!

I hope you have gotten some good answers by now. It did seem very unfair. Good luck.

Thank you! I am contacting an attorney as soon as I receive the letter stating why I was fired. I am sure she won't list the actual reason she gave me. However, I have no write ups in my file and my other boss of nearly two years says he will vouch for my work, attendance and everything else.

“Wrongful Termination” is a catch-all phrase that does not have a distinct legal meaning. There is no general “wrongful termination” statute in Missouri, but some terminations are indeed unlawful. Lawyers and laymen often have different ideas in mind when they think of wrongful termination. By the way, sometimes when you quit your job you can still sue for wrongful termination, if your resignation meets the standards for what the law calls “constructive discharge”.

Thank you. I am going to see exactly what my rights are. I don't think it can be right that a boss can fire someone who is doing their job and has never missed even one day in two years of employment.

I'm not sure about Missouri, but you can be fired in Kansas for any reason. The boss can fire you for not liking your shoes if he wants. The only thing they can't fire you for is joining in a walk out or refusing to cross a picket line.
