How Are Yours Doing? |
|
My tomato plants that I put in pails have started to yellow at the bottom, but each of them still has one tomato growing and plenty of flowers, so I don't know if they'll bear much fruit, but I'll get at least one from each of them. It's not over yet! These three that are alongside the house were planted a little later than the others, and they're doing awesome. You can't see the flowers due to the leaves, but they're there and I've seen tiny bees in the area, so I'm sure they're doing their job and I'll see baby tomatoes soon. I think I did pretty good starting from seed - and I don't even like tomatoes! Are you eating any of your tomatoes yet? My husband is chomping at the bit, waiting impatiently with his fork, can of tuna, and jar of mayonnaise.

Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | Ouch, that's too bad. I can't imagine not having much of a summer. Could you plant some cooler crops? I think lettuce and cabbage do well in cooler weather, and maybe broccoli, brussel sprouts and that sort of thing. I'd definitely look into it.

2. sweetdesign (1666) | 3 months ago | We have gotten a lot of cherry tomatoes off the vine already. The bigger variety are getting ready to be picked also. Lots of fruit this year!! I am proud of all my tomato plants even the one who is smaller than all the rest.

Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | I started all of mine from seed at various times, so I will have them coming in for a longer period through the summer (I hope!) I just have the one type of tomato, the big boy beefsteak or somesuch. I think cherry tomatoes are easier, but my husband wanted the big guy.

|
sweetdesign (1666) | 3 months ago | Ours are heirloom plants of 3 different varieties. One is cherry tomatoes one is yellow and the other is red. Big ones aren't ready yet though.

3. everlasting (9277) | 3 months ago | When tomtoes are in season, they are so cheap here so that makes us lazy to plant our own. What I have planted is bell pepper and ginger. I hope the rain will not destroy it because it already has fruits.

|
Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | I planted two different types of peppers from seed too, colorful bell pepper and banana peppers. They just when through a really big growth spurt and I think I see little flower buds starting, so it shouldn't be long and I'll see some peppers, I'm sure.

GardenGerty (13407) | 3 months ago | The peppers always are a little slower than the tomatoes. They like the hotter weather. It sounds as if you and hubby are going to do some really healthy eating this year. I like to put slices of red bell pepper in my sandwiches when I cannot get decent tomatoes.

Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | Wow, 40 tomatoes does sound like a lot! I've got lots of flowers but I know I don't have near that many, not all at once anyway. Tom says he will eat them for lunch every day.

5. GardenGerty (13407) | 3 months ago | I can just see him "chomping at the bit" as if it is a great race to a great taste. Too early for homegrown tomatoes just yet, especially since I was a slow starter. I did not have any yellowing on my vines, but the first two times I planted, something came along and ate the tops right off the plants. I can see one tomato for sure, and it is a beef steak or better boy, cannot remember what I planted. It is bigger than a ping pong ball and not so round, but more flattened. I love fresh, homegrown tomatoes and hope to find some in the farmer's market soon. Have a wonderful day. Nice of you to plant tomatoes for hubby, since you do not like them. I had better get some radishes planted for mine.

Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | I needed things to plant that I could do in containers or small areas, and since he loves tomatoes so much, it seemed the thing to do. It will sure be cheaper (and much better!) than buying them at the store. Even if I don't like to eat them, I enjoy nurturing things in my little garden.

6. snowy22315 (4737) | 3 months ago | My tomatoes look like they are in pretty good shape. I have a few small tomatoes and plenty of blossoms. I picked a pepper, but their arent any tomatoes that are ready yet. I planted some onions also. I will be happy when I can start pulling fresh stuff out of the garden.

Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | I'm really ready for these tomatoes to ripen so that my husband can enjoy them. He is tickled that I am going to all this trouble for him, but I'm having fun and it keeps me off the streets!

Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | I was lucky enough to find a good number of tomato cages that someone had tossed to the side of the yard near the woods here at the place that I'm renting. I didn't have to pay for them, so it worked out great!

catfish57 (683) | 3 months ago | it sure did work out for you.you might be able to use them again next year, if you keep them.

8. Hatley (11245) | 3 months ago | I dont have room for a vegetable garden as I just have a little soil around my concrete patio in front of our apartment. but I could have grown some tomatoes had I thought of it earlier 'as I am a real tomato lover and I c an see you can grow them in containers too. lol.

|
Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | Yep, containers is the way to go if you can't have a 'real' garden. This is my first time doing it and so far I've done pretty good, with the little knowledge and limited resources I have to work with.

10. beautyqueen26 (7199) | 3 months ago | Not doing so well with plants this year. Maybe next year I will get around to doing some more container gardening. Right now, I have to clear the back yard for a garden. I have a spot picked out near the fence. It's the right size. I'm just worried that the Landlord will send someone out and mow over my garden, even if I put up a small fence. He came out last week and cut down my shade trees in the front yard. Now the front of the house swelters in the afternoon sun! Best of luck with your plants. Let us know how they turn out. Be well. BeautyQueen

Ldyjarhead (4061) | 3 months ago | Well that stinks. He didn't even tell you he was cutting them? I'm renting a small place here too and my landlord is right next door. He better not think about doing anything like that to me! (He's a nice guy so I don't think he would).
