14 year old girl mauled by bear in bike race

Wow! She was in a bike race in Alaska, and managed to dial 911 before her phone went dead. The police called her number back and a rider heard the phone ringing and found it and the girl by the side of the road and talked to the police. She was lucky she was wearing her bike helmet...the bear bit her head. She..."suffered head, neck, torso and leg wounds. She underwent surgery and was in critical condition Sunday afternoon at Providence Alaska Medical Center, police said." How scary! Hope she pulls through!

I have a love hate relationship with cell phones. But in this case I'm glad for them. They probably wouldn't miss her until it was too late to save her. It had to be very scary to meet a bear like that. The people that put on the race should have had the area checked better to make sure it was safe from bears or had the race take a different rout since a bear had charged two runners on a nearby trail two weeks earlier. They should have known that it was her territory.

WOW! That is scary. I hope she does pull through and is okay. I can just imagine what she was going through when that happened.

bear maulings are scary, I have never been in the wilderness but I would be too afraid to because of wild animals attacking.

Oh that would be so bad!! I am glad someone found her!! I don't know that I would have even thought of 911. I hope she makes it!

Wow!! What an amazing story. I am glad that that call wasn't in ain, and that the girl was able to get help from 911 and from the follow rider. It's really scary when stuf like animal attacks happen.

Hello dear estherlou. I am so sad and so sorry to hear and read the news about the girl badly hurt by the bear. I hope that she will receive a very good service from the hospital and wish her to recover soon. Bless her.

This is such a horrible thing to have have happened to someone 
Things could of been a lot worse , and I am so happy she got the help needed . I sure hope she will be okay , and find peace with what happened. Thank goodness she had the phone on her.
