Are you a first time vegetable/fruit gardener? A long time v/f gardener? Or one

who took a break and is back to gardening again? I took a break from gardening after my Mother died. Then I took up herb gardening. Now I'm back to mostly vegetable gardening with wild fruit pretty much doing its own thing. So whatever you answered first, why? Why are you first time, long time, or took a break and back to it again? Have you expanded your garden this year, made it smaller, or is it the same and why? Our newspaper, yesterday, had an article on many first time gardeners. Most people I know are getting back into it and not first time. So I'm just curious.

I bought pots at the dollar store, seeds at the dollar store (6 packages for a dollar), dirt at the cheapest place I could find (Kmart) that was all natural/organic ( was like 4, 5, or 6 bucks), so total cost was about $20 dollars or less to get started this year and I've been eating salad once a week ever since. Just put dirt in pots, followed directions on packages for putting seeds in the ground, and watered when get dry. The stuff I'm growing is getting eaten alive by bugs and mold, but my porch garden is going strong. So you're actually better off with pots some years. So go for it! I have friends who cheat, they just buy stuff at the gardening centers that has already grown like tomato plants, etc. They just buy bigger pots, repot and grow either in their gardens or on their porches. Costs way more. But saves on gas, just go to the porch or garden and pick lunch! Time: We start our gardens on Memorial Day (tradition). Replant whatever hasn't grown on July 4th ( or any day before it that we can get time off). Pots: At one point they were everywhere! Every store from the dollar store to Kmart to Lowes. It only takes one day and a few pots to get started. One of my friends started with one pot and lettuce. Come on, you can do it! Go from planning to actualizing!

We currently have planted a tomato plant and a jalapeno pepper plant in my herb garden! I've had an herb garden for 2 or 3 years now, just outside the back door. And I love it! Years ago, I had a vegetable garden. My husband is more of a flower gardener, so we hadn't planted "food" in years. We do have a ruby red grapefruit tree, a tangelo tree, and a "fruit cocktail" tree, which is one tree with 3 different fruits--tangelo, limes, and lemons. Yes, I'm definitely a gardener who is just getting back into planting a vegetable or two.

I envy you your fruit trees. Tomato and jalapeno pepper plants, you can make your own salsa! I went back to planting veggies, but with the bugs as well as mold, only my porch garden is doing very well. So I guess I'm a porch gardener this year. It rains for weeks at a time and I'm not sure which veggies grow in rain forests. Good luck with your veggies, thanks for responding and take care.

I have been planting veggies for 12 years. When my two youngest were still 'too little' for me to spend time out there, my garden was very small. They are old enough now to come out with me and they love to help out. I made my garden twice the size it was this year and have it packed full. I have lots of vegetables, and some herbs. I also have black walnut trees, mint and mulberry bushes. Next spring, I plan to plant more berry bushes, and possible a pear tree.

I envy you for your black walnut trees and mulberry bushes. A pear tree, I would also like. There was supposedly one on my property when I bought it, but I never have seen/found it. You are not only planting a garden with your children, you are also planting memories. I have many memories of my Mother and I (and even sometimes my Dad-who mostly worked downstate so it wasn't often) working on the garden together. My husband also has many memories of gardening with his Mother and then later on going to work for a potato farmer. Thank you very much for your response, it was a very, very good one.
