Is McCain's Short Fuse Cause For Concern?

John McCain's temper has been well documented for years but I wonder if the extent of it is fully known by some of his most straight-laced supporters. They may be able to accept him calling his Senate colleagues, especially Democrats, by variations of the F-word or S-word but how about calling his wife the C-word? In full view of aides and reporters during a 1992 campaign stop, no less? This and more is contained in the new book, The Real McCain by Cliff Schecter. http://www.rawstory.com/news/2008/McCain_temper_boiled_over_in_92_0407.html Could it be PTSD stemming from his ordeals as a POW? Perhaps it's just his nature? Regardless of the reason for this famous temper and less than diplomatic way of dealing with others, even his own wife, do we really want someone like this to have his finger on the red button or even access to world leaders who may not be quite as understanding as the members of the media who have chosen to keep this stuff quiet? "Character" is important for the future President as is "Experience"; what about temperament and self-control - do they count as well? Annie

While I may not agree or disagree with his choice of words, I have to say that I can see that the man is human :) I like that!

This is an election year and it is going to get ugly. People will do anything to create negative publicity. Maybe the guy was being a *Fn* jerk or an *A* hole. I would like to know what they did to be called that. Sometimes people can be Fn jerks or A holes. Calling someone a name is no where near as bad as Obama's fetus surviving an abortion vote. I think both Obama and McCain are going to do a terrible job. I don't think it is a good idea for either of them to be president.

If McCain's temper stood in the way of progress he wouldn't have made it in politics for so long. That incident was 16 years ago if it really happened. 16 years is a long time and something would have come up by now. That guy is just trying to sell his book which is probably based on lies.

From what I've gathered the incidents you're referring to happened several years ago. McCain has acknowledged, even discussed at great length, the issues he's had with his temper. He's also stated that he has been, and continues to, work on controlling his temper. He's human, and by far the only politician who's ever used foul language when having a heated debate in a government session. No, I don't find it professional. But, like everyone else, I've had moments where I've lost my temper and used words that I would normally not use. I don't think McCain's past problems with a short temper are cause for any great concern. I still plan to vote for him.

Do you have anything more reputable than an opportunist trying to sell a book? We've talked about legitimate sources before Annie. If all we have is this guys claims, then all we have is a load of horsecrap. According to that page these things happened around the same time as Dan Quayle's misspelled potatoe, and George H.W. Bush inaccurately describing the location of Arkansas. The media covered every possible misstep that year and if such things had been said, there would have to be documentation of it besides this ONE person. If you'd like I'm sure I can find you a few passages from an Ann Coulter book that would say much worse things about Obama. Would you believe those if I posted them?

Personally I've only heard of this one particular incident from this one person but there have been many other incidents including on the Senate floor. About Ann Coulter...I think you know I wouldn't believe a single solitary word that b1tch ever said...lol. BTW, my personal opinion of her really has nothing to do with her politics but with the fact she is the biggest waste of human flesh ever born, or created or hatched or whatever she came from. Annie

I do understand your point but this author says there were other witnesses and I haven't heard any denials. "It has as much credibility as that lame story about McCain pulling a diplomat out of a chair by his throat." What is so lame about that? There have been many comments made by other Senators from both parties about McCain's temper but they're too loyal and "nice" to say too much because they are a close-knit group in the Senate regardless of party. I say "Where there's smoke there's fire" especially when there's this much "smoke". I just don't think it's worth taking the chance. Annie

Odd, I'd truly thought an Ann Coulter quote would be given great credibility if provided. I hope you understand my point though. The guy is trying to sell a book and like so many other books, it's going to be filled with lies. The people who buy the books are the ones who want to believe lies held in books written by people like Al Frankin, and Ann Coulter. The guy obviously has no supporting documentation and provides no witnesses to the supposed event. It has as much credibility as that lame story about McCain pulling a diplomat out of a chair by his throat.

"Do you also hate your grandpa just because he's old? Make a valid point or get off his back." Now that's mature...lol! Who said anything about "hating" anyone, especially because he's old? However, "hating" someone and not thinking they're any longer capable of the handling the difficult job of being the POTUS are two very different things. Annie

Well here I am after the bad storms last night . I am from Toledo Ohio and I believe that our mayor the great Carty Finkbinder is a great example as to why politicians should be able to keep in control under pressure and also not lose their "hot" head. He was started an argument with someone (while in office) and aided the man to have a heart attack. Luckily our idiot mayor is not in charge of the United States. McCain seems to have no respect for women examples; cheating on his wife (which ever one was before Cindy) and calling a wife the C word. Womens rights have made huge advancements over the past 100 years why on Earth would we want to now start working our way backwards? I am very happy that I will not be voting for him!

Bravo! He's also not for equal pay for women and we all know how he feels about a woman's right to choose. Anyone that would or could call his own wife that word has no respect for women or for himself. I'm no angel and I've been known to use the F-Bomb on occasion myself but there are some things that are just plain and simply beyond offensive. All I know is I don't want that man to have his finger on the red nuke button or to have access to direct contact with leaders of other nations who may want to aim one at us. Annie

You two are both just buying into propoganda without researching the facts. There is no evidence whatsoever that McCain ever called his wife the C word. There is only one person making that claim and it's just some jerk trying to sell a book. Annie, you should no better about him being for equal pay for women. Go ahead and check the stats on how much Obama is paying his female staff members compared to the male staff. Then check the payrates for men and women on McCain's staff. Then you'll see who is just pretending to be for equal pay for women.

Taskr, I really don't understand why you think that I am buying into anything. I simply stated that being from a city where our mayor, and by the way the idiot is a democrat, is a hot head and has caused a lot of issues for the city. This mayor is the idiot that said we should move all the deaf people out by the airport because they are not able to hear the airport noise. He punch a citizen of the city that he got into an argument with and the man sued the city. He got into a verbal argument with an older gentlemen and caused the man to have a heart attack, yet another law suit for the city. These reasons that I have stated here are why "hot heads" should not hold public office. As for the C-word I was unable to find a site that said that he didn't say the word but I did see where he refused to answer the question. So that leaves it open ended and one must draw their own conclusion. Republicans have always been against a woman's right to choose so to me that is being against women's right. A man has the right to choose whether he is a father or not. And actually Obama is the only person in government that I have heard say that men need to step up to the plate and stop being absent fathers. I am young and I am a democrat because I believe that the government should take care of the citizens of this nation. Republicans believe that we should leave this up to churches and whatnot, but they have no problem going into other countries to "better the people" so they can have democracy and fair living conditions. But, it's ok with them that there are citizens in this country to go to bed hungry, elderly and children to not get proper medical care, and for people to be denied the the basic rights given to them by the Amendments of the Constitution. So with these reasons, this is why I have a problem with Republicans being in office.

We sure do not need a person in there without self control, or that has a short fuse. We have enough problems that we don't need someone acting in the heat of the moment.

Anniepa, that concerns me too. I know men like him and it is very hard to hold a rational conversation with them because they are always on the defensive and ready to fight. Even though this was a few years ago, people don't usually change.

You're right, people don't usually change and I'd say if someone acted like a "grumpy old man" before he was old he'd likely only get worse as time goes by. Annie

If his wife thought he was so awful, why didn't she get out years ago? Besides, maybe it's time for our politicians to stop pandering to what other countries want and run ours the best way possible. If McCain wants to run on an eye for an eye with other leaders, let him. That's the thing about having a temper: somebody else would have provoked it. The man isn't going to go to war with Azerbaijan just because he feels like it. So no, I wouldn't think it's anything to worry about.
