The Fair with Nothing There

Last night was my childrens School Fair, I promised them that I would take them as last year the weather was so bad it was cancelled. The weather this year was on our side and was beautiful and so we all took a walk down, I was really looking forward to it as I love these sorts of things and I had a few quid on me just in case I saw something.
But what a disappointment, on the field all there was were two bouncy castles, one for bigguns and one for littlens, and a tractor ride thing, the kids would sit in the back of this trailer on the tractor. The guy driving was going that fast that the kids were actually BOUNCING right up in the back! No way were mine going on that.
So, we thought we would look at the stalls instead, so there was one for plants, and it had about 10 plants on it, a cake stall which was nice, a toy stall with literally nothing on it and a used school uniform stall with all girls uniform on and that was it! I was really disappointed, as were the kids and we stayed for about 40 minutes.
Q1) What are the fairs like around and about your areas, including school fairs?
Q2) Have you ever been to a fair or event that turned out to be a disappointment?

What a shame - I bet the kids were upset! WE don't really have school fairs and it has been quite a while since I have been to any at all that I couldn't really say what any local fairs are like now - perhaps since I still have the wheelchair for a little while I should try getting out to a couple! xxx

Actually as I think someone pointed out, I was probably more upset than the kids! They saw it as an opportunity to run wild with their friends on the school field with no teachers to stop them!

mummymo! I am surprised at you suggesting that LOL, but the thought did cross my mind! Everyone was shocked at the speed he was driving round that field with the kiddies in the back!

We have fantastic fairs in this area especially at the school, though sometimes the stalls can be a bit light on items but then a lot of the time this is the parents fault for not donating or baking more but in general it is a pretty good show. Ours don't really have much more than stalls though, maybe a few tombolas and a cocnut shy, definitely no bouncy castles or tractor rides. Sorry to hear that you were disappointed by it and the kids also. I don't think I have ever been to one that has turned out to be a disappointment though. Ellie :D

Well all the kids on Friday were asked to donate an item for the fairs and they gave each class certain things to bring in. Mine were asked to bring cakes and books and so I raided my bookshelf which I saw as a perfect reason to get rid of some books I did not want. I also bought cakes for my other son to take, so unless there was not enough kids bringing stuff in or whether they did not have a wide variety of different things, I dont know. There was no tombola or nothing.

That is so sad for the children they must have been so disppointed. I have never know a fete or fair of any type not to have a tombola and a prize raffle. It is these that raise extra money to put puit back into the schools funds. I would have a word with someone on Monday especially as the weather was good they could have really made some money if they had done this. Ellie :D

Wow, this sounds like a bad fair!! When my kids were small and they had these annual fairs at their school, it was always fun. They had dunking booths, cake walks, the duck pond, darts, basketball dunk, ring toss and all kinds of other games!
The shopping arena was also nice. They rented spaces to local craftsmen/women. So there was a nice variety of vendors to shop at also. You would find handmade clothing, crafts, Avon, other makeup, jewelry, etc.
The school usually had donations for the concession stands of lots of cookies and cakes. That was all 100% profit for the school. They also rented popcorn machines and served hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as nachos.
The afternoon event for the fair was an auction where they solicited donated items from all involved in the school and also the local community and businesses. This was always a huge event and well attended with the auditorium filled to capacity. I can remember buying some nice things at this auction! I wouldn't mind going back again just for the auction!
I'm sorry your school's fair turned out so bad. Maybe they could use some new suggestions for next year. Why don't you call them up and see if you can get a committee going to improve the school fair?

I tell you what it was a shame really, my kids school has come on in leaps and bounds over the years it is that good now everyone wants their kids there. It is pretty hard to get kids in there now and to see that fair was a real shame.
What you describe is what a fair SHOULD be like, and you know I even thought about seeing if I could do something to help out and try and make it better.

gemini rose we have the orange county fair coming up this month and lasts three weeks with all sorts of produce on display, and arts and crafts building, new inventions, horticulture building, photograhy, and film, paintings building, farm machinery, animals display, four h animal sales and a rodeo, and all sorts of side shows, and oddles of food stalls of all kinds. it would take a whole day to visit all the different venues and its well worth your time to do so. also various bands will be performing and there will be a carnival and midway. everybody and his dog comes to the orange county fair.oo

I don't believe that I have ever been to one that was as bad as this one seemed to be.. I don't believe that I would have stayed for very long.. I know it had to be dissapointing to the children, as they had been looking forward to it, I am sure.. Any fairs that I have been to, and we do have a huge one each Septemmber, are over the top with rides, displays, fireworks, food stalls, games, and so much more.. You end up staying from the time that you get there, which in our case was about 2:00 in the afternoon until after the fireworks which were set off at 10:00 in the evening.. And then you wanted to go back the next day.. But the one that your children went to sounded horrible..

It was horrible, everyone said that they could not believe how poor it was. I am going to look into trying to help and make the next one better, I may put a stall up myself if I can and just get a ruck of good things to sell. I am sure that I can do something to make it better.

That would make it so much better, you have to care if you want to make something like that work, and it appears that no one cared this year..

This sounds much like the lavendar festival we went to last weekend which I told you about in another discussion.
We have a few fairs and carnivals throughout the year here and there. I've never been to a school fair. But every year at the end of August we have "The Great New York State Fair". This fair is so awesome, you literally can spend an entire day there and still not see everything. It's huge! They have 2 concerts each day, a paid one with a really big name in music, and a free one, which is usually a "has been" like the Temptations or Cyndi Lauper, they were here last year. There are livestock shows, street performers, petting zoos, many buildings with things in them, like the dairy building has a 4 foot by 4 foot sculpture made completely out of butter. The horticulture building has flower displays and a sand sculpture as big as a house! The food is to die for, and the rides... there is a kiddie land of course, but the main midway is at least a mile long!
We look forward to it every year.

Wow!! This one does sound like it would not be worth going too. All of the ones I have ever been too in the past have been interesting. Sometimes they may not be as Good as the yr. before, or the last one I went too, but they have all been worth going too. A lot of the problem anymore, is that a lot of them now tend to charge too much or are too far to travel to get to them. With the high price of gas, etc. we end up having to pinch pennies usually to where we never can get there much. I actually miss the Good ole days now as well.

O! how is it your kids got reconciled to the disappointment?.. I think the disappointment for them will me more than that of yours..
And only i wonder that.. though these Fair kind of things, occur in various countries.. but quite often it is the same thing every where, irrespective of places, leading to the disappointment.

Oh, that's sad! Especially for the
little ones.
I am sure that I have been to my fair
share of lousy carnivals/fairs.
But I don't remember any.
Once I went to a PTA meeting at school
and won a cake. It was lots of fun.
