There are extended zip codes.. the 1st box is for the 5 digits.. the 2nd is 4 the 4 digit extension most forms don't require the last 4 digits, but if it requires it.. look on a piece of your mail.. or call your local post office you might find the extension at usps.com as well

I just remembered.. here is the website, you enter your address... it will give you the extended 4 digits http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp

When it shows two boxes like that it isn't asking you for your zip code, it is asking for your postal code. To have a postal code you need to live in Canada. So therefore the site you are trying tosign up with when you see that, is for Canadians only. I have the same problem all of the time, with zip codes as I am not American I can not sign up to the site. My postal code is T2E 1J3 and as you can see it is in two boxes if I were to put boxes around it. So when you see that again you will know the site is only for Canadians.

Most forms anymore seem to want the extended zip code. I honestly would have to go look at some mail to tell you what mine is. I never put it on anything.

Zip+4 has been around for several years now and I'm surprised you haven't heard about it. It breaks down your regular 5-digit zip code even further, making it easier and quicker to sort mail at the post office. You should be able to find your easily enough by going to usps.com - there should be a place to type in your address and it will provide you with the full zip code. Not all places require it yet, but it will be required soon, so might as well make note of what it is.

Zip codes have become more precise, with additional numbers added after the initial five that you normally use. These are mostly used by automated addressing systems and most people don't bother with the last...I think it's four numbers. I know that I never do...don't even know what mine are...and I always get what I've ordered even if there's an extra box for the extra numbers.
