In our town, You are not allowed to smoke in some of the work places, especially the Hospital And if you go across the street away from work place and throw butts in a yard, you will get fined or ridden up on your Job, the neighboors saids they are tired of the employees leaving Butts in front of there house, I would'nt like it either would you? My Girl-friend came over my house and smoked out on the Patio, because I don't let her smoke in my house, Do you know she throw the Butts on the ground, Now I thought that wasn't nice at all, and I told her.Another thing you will even get a ticket for doing that if Security or Police sees you. Glad I don't smoke anymore.

You have a good law in your town, how I wish there is that kind of law here in the Philippines. Though smoking in public transportation, offices and hospitals are prohibited there are still hard headed individuals who smoke in public places and throw their butts anywhere. It's about discipline, if one doesn't want a mess on his own yard he should not do it to somebody's place. I wish for some more strict law or penalty for those smokers so our children can still have a nice environment to live with.

I have noticed that when it comes to smokers and smoking, even the nicest person becomes very selfish regarding the environment of others. In England there is a smoking ban in the work place and confined public places. It is my opinion that if the government don't want people to smoke then they should go all out and ban the sale of ciggarettes full stop.

Well it does not surprise me, but I think it is good. I smoke, but it is still littering. I have a little ashtray outside and at work we have bins.

Hello marciascott, I don't know where you live, in the U.K. we are not allowed to smoke in any work place hospital pubs and restaurants but are allowed to smoke outside anywhere. I smoke but I always make sure I put my butt out and then put it in the bin. Tamarafireheart.

In our towns, it is now illegal to smoke out of designated areas. I think the WHO will have to do more in forcing governments to handle smoking with stricter laws.

I feel you're perfectly in your right to tell your friend that it isn't nice to throw her butts on your patio. I used to have that problem often too, now I keep one of those plastic patio ashtrays conveniently located so they can't miss it. I bought a few at the dollar store and then drilled a couple holes into the bottom. That way I can leave them outside and if it rains, the ashes and water floats away, and the butt remains in the ashtray for easy clean-up. As far as fining people, hey, I think they need to do whatever is necessary to keep people from trashing where they shouldn't! It takes years for those filters to disintegrate and return to nature. Glad to see you back posting :-) Hugs...your friend Joy!

Marcia I smoke, but like you I hate it when people just toss their butts in my yard, and my hubby is the worlds worst for this. I keep ashtrays and a big butt can on my back porch so there is no excuse. We now have a new number for people to call in and report you if you throw them out your car window. I always pick up after myself. Hugs Marilyn

Smoking is a terrible curse and it is very difficult to stop once you're hooked. It is good that there are laws now that punish things like smoking in some public places. Cheers!!

The smoking laws in Australia are starting to get tough, and a little on the ridiculous side too. Out in public, we are no longer able to smoke within 4 metres of a business or shopping complex door way and are not allowed to smoke within 10 metres of an outdoor eating area. I'm thinking of carrying a measuring tape around with me, because I've been accused by business owners that I am too close to their doors, but when they have gotten their measuring tapes out, I've been more than far enough away to be safe from a fine. I like to think I am a conscientious smoker, taking into consideration other peoples choice of not smoking. I stand as far away from them and try to keep my smoke out of their way when they pass me. I also put my butts in the bin, and if there is no bin around, then I put them back in the packet and dispose of them at home. I do see many smokers just tossing their butts on the ground and it disgusts me. They are giving me a bad name too. Some people have no respect for anything or anyone, and throwing their butts on the ground shows it. They are probably the ones who would light up in my home without asking, and while I am a smoker myself, that is a no no. It was my choice to start smoking (hind sight says should've been smarter than that!) not my kids, and that means I do my best to protect them from my bad habit.

Well.. yah its gross throwing butts on the ground... but where are you supposed to throw them? Our city recently passed a law that you cannot smoke 3 meters from an air intake or a doorway. This is great.. However this means that all the ashtrays have been taken away. Throwing butts in the garbage is dangerous as you can start a fire.
