Do you travel with your children?

This summer I flew to Latvia with my 14 month old son. We caught buses and trains around the region seeing Lithuania and Estonia as well. I found it easy to buy nappies and baby food. The difficult part of the trip was at the airport managing to carry everything thought the security system and even more challenging was getting my son with his pushchair at stairs in some of the accommodation we stayed in.
Have you ever taken your children traveling?
If so where did you go and how did you get on?

Hi Maxine, I have taken my children abroad when visiting family but not for travelling. I did find when my son was in a pushchair though it was difficult at the airports at times but other than that fine. I have only been to Spain with them though, not travelling around. Ellie :D

We travelled to Africa (from India) when my older son was 14 months...and though he was an active child (always wanting to move about)...the trip wasn't as bad as I thought....despite him throwing up twice in 2 different flights. He was a very non-fussy child and I didn't think twice when we planned the trip.
But with my younger one....I can't even imagine travelling anywhere. I had a hard time managing him ( as a 11 month old) on a 90 minute flight when we had to attend my sister's wedding.
My older one could be easily pacified when he was cranky and he would stay well in my arms (I didn't bother to take a pushcar)...but the younger one is difficult to manage when he gets cranky and he would cry almost all the time when he was little.
He's 20 months now and I still dread taking him anywhere and can't even think of travelling anywhere with him. I would hardly get any sightseeing done with him. I'd always be worried about feeding him and keeping him comfortable.

I am pleased that you flew to Africa and that the flight didn't go as badly as you imagined it would with your son when he was 14 months. It was unfortunate that he was sick on the plane a couple of times. It was lucky that he wasn't a fussy child and he could easily be pacified when he was a toddler. Siblings can have different personalities and is sounds like your 20 month old is totally different from his brother. It wouldn't be much fun on a flight if he was crying a lot. I hope that he will become a better traveler as he gets older. Good luck.

I always took my kids when traveling either by conventional airplane flights to a city or even when camping. My kids loved to be in the canoe as babies, even when they were fussy or crying as soon as we were bouncing quietly in the canoe they always stopped.
Camping was a bit more complicated than traveling to another city but it was also a wonderful time for all of us.
It was easier when it was only my daughter, it was two to one kind of thing:) Hubby took care of almost everything else and I took care of the baby. But when my son was born it was more one on one LOL Still we didn't find any specially difficulty in any of the places we traveled to.
I remember on the first flight with my daughter she was 2 months old. The flight attendants fell in love with her and even took her to the cabin. The whole crew signed her bib and gave it to us, we still have it:)
Our kids were already over 13 when we first traveled alone - hubby and I - and we did it only twice since then. The rest of the time we always travel with the kids if they want to go, they used to want all the time, but now that they are older they sometimes don't. MY daughter is 18 now, she goes with us occasionally but not all the time. My son is 15 and still wants to go with us all the time, but that will change soon. Meanwhile we're enjoying our time with and our travels with them :)

It must have been wonderful when you took your daughter on her first flight when she was two months and you got to keep her crib signed by the cabin crew. I so enjoyed reading about how your children liked being in the canoe when they were babies. You and your husband have had few trip on your own. I guess that will soon change because your daughter is 18 and your son is 15. I went traveling with a friend when I was 17 and my last holiday with my mum was when I was 19. I am glad that you are enjoying your experiences whilst traveling.

It must have been great to go to the island with your son when he was two years old. That time is a happy memory for you. I hope that you will have many more happy times traveling with your son when he is older. China sounds like a lovely country to explore.

I don't have children yet so thanks for sharing so that I can learn from your experience!
It's great that you could buy nappies and baby food whilst travelling. I guess most people would just pack complete supplies so that they are not caught unaware and stuck in some place where they cannot find necessities for their kids. which is why there would be so much to pack when travelling with a child.

When we lived in Samoa I had my son back in New Zealand and then travelled back to Samoa when he was six weeks. He was actually really good and slept most of the way. I didn't have much trouble at all and people around me were willing to help out if I needed it.
I have travelled with him to and fro to New Zealand, and then travelled from there to LA and onto DC. He was 4 when we travelled and a lot more easier to manage. We have also travelled to Florida and Rarotonga and it was easy. I think the older they get the easier it gets for me. As long as I have things to keep him entertained, I was fine.

Samoa is my favorite country and New Zealand is my third favorite country. It is lovely that you traveled with your son when he was just six weeks old. As he has got older he has got used to traveling and it sounds like he likes traveling even more now. Yes, the older my son gets the easier it will be. Thanks for your superb response my friend.

I had only traveled once with my 2 sons before when they were just 4 and 8 years old. We went to Singapore to celebrate christmas and new year with my hubby and 2 siblings there, then we had a sidetrip to Indonesia. I didn't encounter problems during our travel coz my sons were a little grown up and can walk by themselves. We enjoyed our holiday.

It sounds like you had a wonderful family holiday to Singapore. I think that it is so clean, orderly and lovely that it is a wonderful place to take children. The airport there is probably the best airport in the world. I have been to Singapore an really enjoyed it. Going to Sumatra was exciting but I don't think it is as good for children.

I have never travelled with my baby through plane... the fathest i travelled with her is like for 3 hours on a rented van... she just slept through it... i am waiting for her to be like 4 or 5 years old... then i will start planning trips involving air travel... right now... it is quite difficult because she doesn't want to walk by herself... especially when there are a lot of strangers around... so i have to carry her... you are very lucky...

I always travel with my kids and sometimes I know its a hassle. As they get older its a little easier though so be patient. The last time I took the kids anywhere was to a island about 40 miles from where we live and we went by boat,so it wasnt long like 2 hours. They actually behaved which made it a lot easier than most times.

It is lovely that your children behaved well on the boat trip. It is great that you are patient with them and still bother to travel with them even though sometimes it can be a hassle. I would like to take my toddler son to a hot country and get him used to traveling in the tropics. Thanks for your super response my friend.

Yes i have tried traveling with a one month old baby.It was an emergency flight going to the Philippines.Though he's still very young we have brought with us is trolley plus the hand carry. That is one of the problem specially if you have connecting flights.Another thing is he did not like the earplugs so I have to keep on pushing bottled water into his mouth
,to keep him away from being so irritated during take off and landing.I guess the next time we travel with kids we'll get lesser problem as my youngest is turning three. And hopefully we'll have our vacation after 7 or 8 months more.Good day.

Traveling with your son when he was just three months old must have been quite an experience. Yes, airlines allow babies of 7 days or older to fly but I guess few people do but as you say it was an emergency. Luckily my son doesn't get irritated during take off and landing. He has stronger ears than me. I hope that your next trip will go really smoothly.

I would love to go to China and most of all I would like to arrive there on the the train all the way from Moscow. I would stop off in Mongolia on the way. The top sight that I would love to see is the Great Wall. China sounds like a beautiful and fascinating country.
