What Part Of Unconstitutional Does DC Not Understand? email this discussion to a friend?

District of Columbia is at it again, they have renewed the same handgun law that was ruled unconstitutional by the SCOTUS. The "new" bill would require gun owners to keep the gun unloaded and either disassembled or equipped with trigger locks rendering the gun inoperable for the purpose of immediate self-defense. What part of “In sum, we hold that the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense," does DC not understand?

Washington DC is just so disgusting. I am almost 100% sure our congressmen and president have never actually read the constitution in full length, they don't even read bills entirely before the pass them. The patriot act was hundreds of pages, and they passed it within 24 hours after it was introduced onto the floor! If that is the truth, and we are not allowed to have enabled guns in our home, I say hell with it, don't follow their rules. They are scared of us anyway. Have you noticed that they have been offering money to buy your gun from you??? They did this right before the great depression too, always when there are economical hardships, because they are so scared of us having any power. I say more power to the people, and the constitution, which was made to protect us from them.

If I had to live in DC, I guess I would do what that famous blind man did some years ago. Remember him? He used a chain saw for self defense.

Interested in the rest of the story?

This blind guy was concerned about an enemy he knew he had, so rigged a master switch to all his lights in the house (he didn't use them anyway) and put up 'black out' curtains on all his windows. When he hit the switch, no one but him knew how to move around the house.

The day came when the enemy came after him. Everything went according to plan with the bad guy going to the hospital and the blind man was not charged with anything.

Of course, anybody else would not use the master light switch, but maybe people in DC should get chain saws for their homes.

Hmmm... now that I'm thinking about it how about in addition to the chainsaw, super loud heavy metal music coming on, and wear one of those protective hockey goalie masks? Even if the bad guy had a gun, he might run.

I've never heard this story but I find it highly unlikely that such a story could be true. While a person is allowed to defend their property, the use of "traps" such as that which you described is illegal. In numerous different cases burglars have sued home owners after being injured by traps. They've even successfully sued over things that were clearly not intended to be traps such as the burglar who sued after falling on a steak knife. While legally, a homeowner has no duty of care to a trespasser, traps are still illegal.

On a side note, I hate guns and stick with swords for my home defense. Chainsaws are chaotic and I'd never have such a tool laying around my house.

It was not a trap in the sense of dangerous device left untended. The blind man wielded the chainsaw as a weapon. The other guy had a gun. Then the fact that the intended victim was blind pretty much meant there would be jury sympathy of the guy if charged. This event happened probably 10 years or more ago.

Hello Gewcew,

Well, I guess it won't be long before the persistent, fascist, selectively deaf District of Columbia leadership will find themselves back in court! The N.R.A. has pronounced a full-scale, counter-attack on all politicians and municipalities who maintain existing, or initiate new code or laws that contradict the recent SCOTUS ruling.

If anyone professes a reverence for the U.S. Constitution, then they must support the effort to thwart fascist defiance of the Second Amendment, with the same vigor with which the support the First Amendment, and each subsequent outlined right. They are after all a packaged deal! Which seems a point of contention for many on the left!

I guess it's time to send another contribution to the N.R.A.!

What I forgot to put into my discussion that a member of the DC city council told the Washington Times that the city is prepared to have to go back to court. What is wrong with this picture? The city knows that their "new" law is unconstitutional but what the heck let us do it.
Selectively deaf now that is a good one.

Fascist defiance of the Second Amendment? Is that anything like fascist defiance of habeas corpus? (BTW, I do support the scotus decision and am pro gun rights.)

DC, takes our Constitution and amends it to suit "their" purpose.
Most people there have body guards that "we the people" pay for
and aren't concerned with how we protect ourself. "Is" they really
competent? If it's not something that affects them or money they don't
really care.

I have no idea. I would hate to be in DC (on a tour or a visit in my case) and a vicious killer comes in a room, armed and ready to murder as many people as possible. Those people would be dead before they got their guns ready. Look what happened in Canada when those students in Montreal were murdered by that crazed gunman who hated women. No one had any weapons and could not defend themselves and in some schools down there, students go to school without the hope that they will be going home because some nut might bring a rifle and kill them.
I guess DC wants to get more innocent victims and give more rights to the criminals.

Everyone, please be sure to separate the District of Columbia's local government from the Federal government, the President and Congress. They just happen to be located there. surrender

Having said that, I think the new mandate is ridiculous and likely to be overturned. I spent more than 40 years living in Maryland, not far from D.C., and I hated going to that city for a variety of reasons but the main one was that too many areas of D.C. are dangerous. I have always pitied the people who lived in that crime infested city who were not permitted to arm themselves, yet illegal guns were everywhere. D.C. was known as the Murder Capitol for years...I'm not sure if it still is...because the rate of violent crime was so high and shootings were a part of daily life. Allowing lawful citizens to be armed is necessary and, I believe, will reduce the overall number of violent crimes in the city.

I am sorry to hear that you lived not to far from D.C and had to travel into that city.

If not for immediate self-defense, why in the heck does anyone want a handgun? I have thoughts on this, but people would think I forgot to take my medication today if I expressed them here.

No much good for anything, that is why people have them.

And just how would they plan to enforce this? Search every home for guns to find out if they are stored by their guidelines. Sorry, but even IF such a change could be made (doubtful) they aren't going to be able to ensure that its implemented. I know I for one would not comply.

myLot reputation of 59/100. gewcew23 (3419)   ranked 454 out of 4,341 in politics  5 months ago

It is a catch-22, if you comply you become a setting duck, but if you do not you are a criminal.

myLot reputation of 41/100. Taskr36 (2687)   ranked 502 out of 4,341 in politics  5 months ago

This law would most likely come into effect when a someone shot a criminal in self defense. The person who was defending himself would then be arrested and painted as a vigilante and right wing extremist. He'd probably spend the next 6 months to a year in jail while the supreme court reconsidered the constitutionality of this retarded law and eventually, after he'd lost his job, been abandoned by his wife, and been painted as a gun toting maniac, he'd be let out, given $5, and told "There, you've got your life back".

How can anyone be surprised by this. Washington D.C. is so a$$-backwards it's pathetic. This is the same city that knowingly reelected a crackhead, Marion Barry, as mayor. The fact that he was arrested several times afterwards didn't stop them from reelecting him again. It's just pathetic.

Obviously they're trying to circumvent the right to bear arms. If they can't stop people from carrying guns they're going to reduce guns to useless props for everyone except for the criminals. The right to bear arms assumes that you are bearing functional weapons. A disassembled or unloaded gun is not a functional weapon unless you're one of the rare folks out there who can assemble one in less than a minute. Most of us would simply be shot in the head as we fiddled with our disassembled weapon or tried to load it.

And it won't change until some of these people demanding for gun control have something happen to them in which they could have saved their life or the life of their loved ones if they had had a way to protect themeselves. When they tell the home invader "hold on! I have to get my dishes to throw at you to protect myself!!" nad the home invader pulls a knife and ignores the request, maybe then they'll figure it out.
