Sooooo Independant!!

We can't have pets here but there are about 6 stray cats around our neighborhood and I have tried putting food out so they will come up to the house so my little one can see a cat up close, but they will not come. They are nothing like a dog that you can sit down and say come here and a dog will come. I wish cats were not so independant.

One of the delightful aspects of cats is their independence. The cats you have discovered are probably feral cats, very wary of humans, as has been said. If you feed them, you will have to keep it up as they will rely on you and your concern for them. After a while, they may become more friendly. I would doubt that they would be eager to be friends with a child. It depends on how feral they are. Please do not start feeding them if you don't want to continue doing so.

I dont really want my little one to play with them or anything, i just was hoping to get them close enough for him to see them better. Maybe watch them eat or sleep in the sun.
In ancient Egypt cats were worshipped as gods....cats have not forgotten that. lol@sweetpeasmom (1325)

That is so true!! when we lived out in the country we had a few cats and they ran the farm!! They even bossed to 2 dogs around!!

Strays are usually afraid of humans and the food will have your human scent on it so they won't get to close keep sitting it out leave a bowl of dry food on your porch and they might eventually come but remember if they do start coming they won't go away as they will expect you to feed them all the time then.

They are feral so they are afraid of people. The best thing you can do is to try to talk to them to get them used to the sound of your voice. It is really hard to tame a feral cat but if you have enoguh patience you can sometimes tame them to a degree. I really like cats and try to befriend them whenever I can.
