Don't you think English is a very funny and confusing language?

Okay...um...yeah.

i before e except after c and in words like neighbor and weigh.
c sounds like s but c also sounds like k.

You know I could go on and on. I think it is a very confusing language. I remember panicking when my eldest child reached 1st grade and they sent him home with stuff to read. I thought..."How am I supposed to teach him to read". Needless to say that's all behind us now, but I totally agree. I think we have a very confusing language.

Hi bohemian, any English is confusing, be it the American or the UK. I forgot to add on the use of 's' and 'z' in UK and American English accordingly. (realise vs realize). I think one needs to become a pro first in order to teach someone English or else one will surely mess it up. I don't think any other language has such double usage of words in different situations.

hi cbreeze, thanks for your inputs. I think it is very difficult to teach the language to even a grown-up leave alone a kid with all those grammar and word-usages. I don't remember how I myself learnt it, I think taking one step at a time is the key to learn it. Certainly not a language for a crash-course!:)

Hey, that's very nice. I agree that English is a very important language as it is spoken and recognised world-wide. It's just that sometimes same words can be used in different situations and plurals having different rules makes it more intriguing. Also, people look up to a person who can speak fluent English. I guess, they understand the pain he's gone through! he he:)

Hey, it's a very funny language indeed. I am not too sure about the grammar being easy. Usage of 'a', 'an' & 'the' was also a mystery to me when I was learning grammar in school. The pronunciation of 'the' was also different in different cases. We used to have whole chapters on just their usage.

i believe it is but does it hold some truth as well? although it is just common sense but you'll see people right now without it, or perhaps because it is so common that it has no sense anymore. is it?

hey, sirrob even I am relatively new here. But I have seen writing or hearing jokes as one of the interests here. I think that will really help you start discussions and even respond as far as humour is concerned. But, still I am not sure as I recollect reading one of the responses saying that you cannot write jokes on Mylot. Need help from experienced Mylotters.

Yeah, I agree with you. We sometimes use the wrong spellings and words all the time with nobody really caring about the usage. I guess, nobody is quite sure which comes where and so there are so many mistakes which are actually taken for granted. I am sure you can even find many mistakes in my post here.:)

Yeah, for someone learning it while growing up, it is easy. You tend to accept the usage. It's like it's a fact and you can't apply logic saying that if 1 plus 1 makes 2 then 2 plus 2 must make 5. I am sure foreigners make learn the language allright but the fine tuning for proper usage of words and grammar will required a lot more time.

Yeah, having spoken it right from childhood makes it easy for you. Kinda having heard the sentences being framed in a particular sequence makes learning also very easy. Just that you've mastered the language makes you think it's easy, but think of the new learners who virtually know nothing and it seems a very uphill task. What say?:)

Hey, that's really nice to know that English language has been your saviour. But even spellings differ, like in American and UK English. Surely, English is a world-known language and people follow it too. Guess, sometimes it is really funny!:)

harsha, do you speak language/s other than english? i could agree with you when you said that english has the beauty of defining the even most simple thing to be very easier and that it would be hard for you to do the same when you don't know other language. myself, do the same as well that i could do it in my native tongue yet there are just times that i can do with english more comfortable than using ym native language. in fact, in my country there are almost hundreds of different languages and dialects spoken, some don't understand what someone up north are saying and that is vice versa as well. though everyone can speak our national language considering that it is the language that we used at school in that certain subject but the rest are done in english. and we are encourage to speak and use english all throughout and it is the language of choice in the classroom even it is just our second language. so, i would say that it depends.

Probably not. English is a language where you are very free to express yourself and how you truly feel. In a lot of other languages you do not have that option.

Yeah, that's a good point you made about deaf people. English language has great powers and there's no debating that. Yes, learners should try and try till they succeed. You'll surely overcome the English language and begin using it effectively.
